Getting fitted for a putter
RangeHound replied to timastyle's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I understand your point....however you can twist, bend, and contort you upper body to make the marks line up....what are your arms doing? I have been to Todd Sones Coutour fitting school, several times. All my issues have had little to do with head and a lot to do with what happens with the arms. Go to his website. Not saying his putters are the best because most high qaulity putters can be adjusted just the same. -
Getting fitted for a putter
RangeHound replied to timastyle's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
If you would get fitted irons or a driver why wouldn't you get fit for the club that can easily make up 50% of your strokes. Try http://www.coutourgolf.com as a good reference site. -
Shaft PUREing, Puring, or Spining
RangeHound replied to GreensDruid's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Puring or spining is simply aligning the "pure" flex of the shaft in some orientation with the club face. Here is the best simplification of the process. The shaft is held at the butt and the tip is flexed in one plane. When the shaft is released is oscillates in and elliptical or oblong circular pattern. Puring simply finds the plane at which a shaft oscillates in a straight line. In reality the best shaft "those used by Tiger" oscillate in a straight line. I have had two complete sets of irons, and drivers pured. My local shop has given me the charts from every shaft. About half of my shafts are very close to oscillating in a straight line. A few of my shafts are marginal. From what I understand the factories go through thousands of shafts and make sure the factory players get the best shafts. In reality it is about consistency… If you want your shafts to flex the same each and every swing, among every club, get it done. If you think it doesn’t matter your wasting money. Secondary thought. Obviously during the swing the shaft will flex in a couple of different planes. So there is another school that is questioning what orientation the spine is aligned. -
Not to be critical put lets do a little math. $400 driver = 18 strokes per round $500 irons= 18 strokes per round $150 putter = 36 stroker per round Heck good bag costs more than your willing to spend on a putter, which makes up half of a par 72 round. Check out http://www.coutourgolf.com for a nice option in the putter world. Todd Sones forgot more about putting than most of us will ever know.

I introduced my wife to golf and have purchased every thing she owns. Buyer beware when it comes to women's clubs. I would suggest getting a beginner an affordable set of clubs to get her started. I bought a complete set of pings with ladies graphite shafts, driver etc. BIG waste of money.!!!!!! These were great beginner clubs that as her interest grew she quickly outgrew.(less than 6 months) After trying to teach her....NOT HAPPENING(a whole new thread) I got her a female instructor. On video one could see the massive amount of whip ladies shafts create. I have since learned that Ladies clubs were designed for someone about 65 years old and zero swing speed. They have massive amounts of loft just to get the ball in the air. I bought here a set of Mizuno 950's with Rifle 4.0 shafts. What a huge improvement in her game. Just today she hit her 6 iron 150. My point is be careful what you buy. Just think about it. When you walk into a golf store there is 900 different sets of men's clubs...yet each manufacturer only has one set of women's. When she is ready and develops a little feel get her custom fit for something that works. Putters. Why would you insult your wife with your castoff. Get her custom fit for one that works for her. Check out http://www.coutourgolf.com for an awesome putter that can be balanced for a women.

After using head covers for years, I tried to be cool and not use them on my new set......After a couple of months I started noticing little nicks on my irons and wedges. I was able to restore them with a little ultrafine scotchbrite and on went the head covers. I suspect reason Tiger and such don't use them is because they get a new set every month. Plus they have factory reps to restore them each week. Final Thought.... For all the talk about grooves, milled grooves, and spin I really can't imagine why you would not want to protect the faces of your clubs. As somone who works in a precision machine shop I am sure that uncovered irons have all those nice sharp groove edges nicked up. I don't care if they are cast or forged.

Your height and your putter length
RangeHound replied to hypergolf's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
After failing to have any lasting consistancy in my putting game for any length of time, I was fitted to a Coutour putter. Not only is a putter length an issue, but lie, and head weight come into play. If you take a stock putter and cut the shaft you change the swing weight. Coutour changes the head weight to match each shaft length. Check out http://www.coutourgolf.com -
Bought a set of 25's last fall after trying everything Mizuno had and several other brands. I was in the same position. Not a great player but wanting and willing to get better. Personally I think the concept of forgivness is highly overrated. Sure there is a difference between a set of 60 and 19's. However between a set of 19 and 25's I don't see any huge difference. I feel the 25's are closer to a true players type club and will give you the feedback to be a better golfer.

Bought my wife some Ping Ladies with graphite shafts 2 years ago. She hates them. She hits better with my clubs than hers. She likes the heavier feel and feedback. In reality my clubs should be too long and way to stiff for her. Any suggestions would be great. She is very athletic but does not have a fast swing speed. All my local pros and shops say just stick with the pings. Heck in the men's section there are limitless combinations even within one brand. In ladies the same clubs are are suppossed to work for 20 year olds to my grandma. A liitle advice or direction would be appreciated.

Here is my understanding....Any ball sitting on the green will settle into a "hole" in the putting surface. Either a hole left by somone else or simply gravity pulling the ball down into the grass. The loft is supposed to lift the ball out of the hole and provide forward rolling motion. Too much loft and the ball bounces. Too little and the ball jumps out of the hole creating inconsistant roll. I have heard that 4 deg is good, because most people take about 1 deg out when holding the putter.

Go to Coutourgolf.com and I get fit for the correct length putter? I have been working with this guy for less than a year and have dropped an average of 8 putts per round.
-
I correct myself....I just went to the Nike sight and see Tiger's wedges are forged. However their other wedges are cast. One would think Nike would send a more informed rep. to a Demo day
-
Has anyone ever seen a unbiased study on golf tees. I see all the claims of low CF and no spin, clean takeaway and such. What are the facts?
-
Does Tiger really use the Nike Cast wedges. At a recent demo the Nike rep told me they did not make any forged wedges.

Have MPT's and love the C ground sole. I would concur with the earlier reponse, on how sweet it is to hit with these. Would only chose T.

I had my driver and irons Pured. I played with my irons before and after and would pay for it again. Noticed that mis hits were more consistant. The shop the pured mine gave me all the data sheets for my shafts. Some shafts were not too far off. Others were pretty bad. If you wanted to get real serious about it one would buy a bunch of shafts and just pick the best ones. I had some shafts that a wobbled a bunch. In reality these shafts should be thrown away or sold on ebay.

Mizuno MP Fli Hi Hybrid Iron - Any feedback
RangeHound replied to Island Par's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
These clubs are awesome. I make sure to swing them like irons and have no issues, except I wish I would have bought them sooner. -
Titleist vs. Mizuno irons
RangeHound replied to shsgolfer#1's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Bought a set of MX25 last fall. I hit everthing I could get my hands on. These were the perfect choice fore me. Would have bought 57's if I thought I was man enough to hit them. -
What make of grips do you use?
RangeHound replied to PutterHead's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Am I crazy but I have had mine regriped with standard golf pride only to have them get hard within a few monthes. If I have my local shop get the same grip but from the OEM ie: mizuno they last much longer. -
Putter Face Inserts...Inconsistent
RangeHound replied to RangeHound's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I read it in a British golf magizine at Barnes & Noble. The Mizuno website says: "With the new patented Feel Impact Technology Face™ (F.I.T. Face), this one piece 100% milled carbon steel putter delivers the feel of and insert with this amazing new face. This gives the golfer, just like PGA TOUR® player Luke Donald, an all new enhanced feel when putting the ball. The F.I.T Face™ milled area dramatically reduces the surface area of where the ball makes contact with the face and in turn delivers an extremely solid and soft feel to every putt" I'm not making the claim just looking other's opinions -
Read an articled on Mizuno's BC putters. They claim face inserts make a putter inconsistent. Looking for opinions?

Custom Putter Fitting Questions
RangeHound replied to jowlar's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Check out http://www.coutourgolf.com I have been frustrated with my putting for several years. I went to this ToddSones school and instantly saw a difference. If you can't go, at least chech out his website. Gives you some real insight on how to fit a putter. -
Correct me if I am wrong but here is what I have noticed. All the new or truly innovative stuff comes out in the fall or is at least announced. In the spring it seems that all the "new" stuff is just remakes of the old stuff in a different wrapper. IE the change the color and head cover.

Help me find a golf bag
RangeHound replied to Want2PlayMore's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Bought my wife a sun mountain bag and we both don't like it. Just bought a Mizuno Twister III and love it. -
I went to a Hotstix Licensee. They claim that they can offer everthing the Hotstix center can but cheaper. It cost me $40 for each; Driver, Irons, Wedges etc. My licensee claims to be better because the centers tend to push people to the clubs, and shafts combination they have ready for you to take home today. I did two fittings: driver and irons. In both cases I took the top 3 and hit the stock equipment right off the rack. Based on what I felt and liked I tweaked my favorite with the ultimate shaft suggested by Hotstix. I have spent 1 year hitting everything at every demo day I could find. The Hotstix stuff really helped me focus on what actually would work with my swing. With me driver I instantly could not believe the difference it made. With my irons it has taken me about 2 weeks to develop some confidence. This is mainly due to the dramatic change I made. Zing 2's to Mizuno forged. At the range today I had the tightest group I have ever hit. Unless you have access to a great professional fitter/teacher I would strongly suggest the Hotstix stuff. I liked the licensee I went to because I was able to spend the money saved on my equipment.
