Should I upgrade my old school irons?
badfish74 replied to clarkaj1455's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I would second the notion that it is better to go and try some different sets out before making a decision. When I was looking to upgrade my irons I had a few sets in mind but ended up going with an Adams RPM3 set that was almost $100 under my anticipated budget. Really was between them and a Wilson Staff set I like, but the moral is that they were two brands that weren't even on my radar when I started shopping. You could find something that feels great for a very good price. -
So after much deliberation I went with the Nike Vapor Speed. Solid club and I like that it is fully adjustable. Only $199 at Dicks on top of it, so in my budget. Now the decision if I want to keep my 21 degree driving iron in the bag or replace it with a lob wedge. lol

Not really up on buying used. I would rather spend a little more and have the piece of mind that someone wasn't chucking it down the fairway. Anyway going to try a few more tomorrow and make a decision. Hopefully I will be swinging something new at the range tomorrow afternoon.

Last (Golf) Thing You Bought?
badfish74 replied to JYB's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Does Walmart count? lol Dozen NXT Tours. -
Thanks for the response. I'm thinking Aeroburner with a stiff flex should suit me well. I like Taylormade products, and it is in my price range. I will admit when the guy at the club told me he doesn't recommend x-flex to many people, it shot my confidence up. :) Small victories with this game. lol

What ball, and why
badfish74 replied to paininthenuts's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I have been playing exclusively with the Titleist NXT Tour. I love them off the tee since they seem to just fly when I make good contact. They are a higher compression ball, but still feel soft off my irons. I may upgrade to the ProV1x once I can cut down on lost balls and get a little better around the greens, but for now I can't justify the price and prefer to play new balls. I am thinking about experimenting with the B330 a little this year. I know people who play them and love them. I also am a fan of Srixon and may try out some Z-stars. I have played Taylormade and Calloway as well. They make a good ball, but they seem to always change their stuff year to year. They come out with something you like then next year its gone. -
Yesterday before my round I was on the range and being a dumbass I set up too far back and on my back swing, and hit the club stand putting a massive crack in my Taylormade Burner driver. Luckily they were demoing the new Nike Vapor, and was able to use one for the round. While getting fitted I was surprised to find out that I had a club head speed of upwards of 110 mph and was told I should use an x-flex shaft. This kinda surprised me but also was nice knowing some of the limited work I have been doing with my swing has been paying off. Anyway I played the round with the club and really liked it, but I can't afford a $400 club at this time. So now I need a new driver. I went to Golfsmith and Golf Galaxy and tried out the Caloway XR, Cobra Fly-Z, Taylormade Aeroburner, and Taylormade r-15. I seemed to do the best with the Aeroburner, which I guess isn't suprising since I have read how forgiving they are. The thing is the monitors there were showing club head speed between 95-100mph. I imagine different devices may vary in measurements, bot it got me wondering. So basically I have a couple of questions. Is there a huge difference between stiff flex and x-flex where it would be more beneficial to seek out an x-flex shaft? I couldn't find any today anywhere I went. Also I have pretty much decided on the Aeroburner, but I have read that higher swings speeds should look towards the Tour option. Does anyone have any insight in the differences between the two? Would the tour option be too much for a higher handicapper regardless of swing speed?

I never understood the appeal of fancy tees. I mean really it is not that hard to figure out what height is good for you with a plain white tee. Add to the fact that you can get a bag that lasts two years for three bucks.

I am much more disappointed with the well struck shots that end up like crap. This game is hard enough without complaining about good results no matter how you got them.

bridgestone e7 vs. b330
badfish74 replied to matobrien's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Well distance balls aren't slippery through the air. Distance balls are usually lower compression balls that give a little boost in yardage to people with a lower swing speed. Also distance balls are usually designed with very low side spin which in theory is supposed to slice or hook less when mishit. -
Pull cart or Carry Bag

If I am walking I am using my push cart. I don't care if people say anything about it. The convenience trumps everything IMO. -
bridgestone e7 vs. b330
badfish74 replied to matobrien's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I have managed to slice a low spin ball just as bad as a tour ball so to me the difference is not very noticeable. If you slice a prov1 violently you just need to learn how not to slice it violently. It would be interesting to see how many more yards a tour ball slices right compared to low side spin ball. -
I did the exact same thing. I pulled my 3 wood on the tee for almost a whole season because I knew I could hit it accurately and about the same distance. After awhile though I hit with my driver exclusively because I felt I needed to be able to learn to utilize the club. I am glad I did because the last couple of rounds and range sessions something has clicked for me with the driver. I am hitting it better than I ever have and with better consistency as well. It's nice to be able to have the extra distance yet still have that confidence in the 3 wood for tight fairways where you need a nice accurate shot.

Balls similar to titleist NXT Tour?
badfish74 replied to Gabriel5404's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
If you don't mind used balls. http://www.lostgolfballs.com/titleist-nxt-tour-2012-golf-balls-p/ti-nxttour12.htm A lot of people swear by their quality. I just ordered a dozen Callaway Hex Chrome and a dozen Nike 20XI-S AAAAA for $42. -
I may be that guy who doesn't talk a lot during the round. I mean I won't be totally silent but if I don't know you I am not going to be cracking jokes and trying to start conversations. I am there pretty much to play golf. The last time out as a single I was paired with a guy who gave me advice. The stuff he told me helped me out so I can't really complain. I don't really mind it as long as it is not on every swing and they don't expect you to drop everything and work on their tips. The key is getting to the course early enough so I can just be by myself. Sometimes it is better that way.

The Best Mid-Priced Ball
badfish74 replied to TMBridgestone's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
My last round I played with a Taylomade TP Black. Usually play Q-Stars but got a dozen for $22 off Ebay (were supposed to be TP3's, but hat is another story) Good ball/ Really takes off the club face when struck solid, but not a fan of the feel off the putter. -
Top Flite Gamer V2=Major bag of suck
badfish74 replied to Forest's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I have been wanting to play CC. I have only been out here about six months and have only played Riverdale and a few courses in Denver. From Wisconsin so I can deal with a little snow while playing as long as I can get out. Golf season is officially over back there. -
Top Flite Gamer V2=Major bag of suck
badfish74 replied to Forest's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Quote: So I tried the major back of suck today. I thought the V2 was pretty good. Though I really must reserve judgment until I can play it in summer conditions. I couldn't get it to stick on the rock hard frozen greens. The few flops I played sounded like the ball came down on concrete, actually bounced around. The ball seems long but the frozen fairways could have something to do with that. It did feel good coming off the clubs and it flew straight but I had a few that flew higher than I'd prefer. I hit it over a few greens and rolled it off a few despite clubbing down one. Hit a big high cut with a 7i on a 177y par 3 with tees at the very back of the box so it played about 8-10y longer than that and it landed about 4 ft from the pin before scurrying to the back of the green and through the fringe before rolling a few inches into the rough. In normal conditions that would be impressive distance for me. Usually hit a 6i from there. For $15 it felt great. Just curious where you played? I am in Lochbuie and I played the back nine at the Knolls at Riverdale today. It was pretty frozen in some spots, especially the tee boxes. -
Suggestions for SGI Clubs
badfish74 replied to scottemory72's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
The one thing I would suggest when purchasing irons is not to buy off the internet based on reviews or other peoples opinions. Check out your local pro shops and the bigger retailers and try out a few sets within your price range. You may find something that is totally off your radar and even save a few bucks. It really comes down to how good you feel swinging it and if it suits your eye on address. -
Pro v1 for mid/high handicaper
badfish74 replied to TMBridgestone's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I play the Srixon Q Star but last time out I went birdie, birdie, par using a found ProV1, though I think it had more to do with me actually getting into somewhat of a groove than the ball itself. I really like the ball but my game is nowhere near where it needs to be to justify spending $45 for a dozen of them when I can get the Srixon's for $25 or even the Nike PD Soft for $15. I do seem to find a lot on the course though and I regularly encourage hackers like myself to purchase them so I can continue to do so. -
They might have to let Yani Tseng play at some point. Well probably not, but it would be interesting. I think she could hold her own with the guys.

Nike Slingshot Irons or Taylormade Burner Plus irons?
badfish74 replied to Kevin18's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Go hit each one and find out which one you like better. It really comes down to personal preference. I didn't swing the Nike's but I did the Taylormade's and they are nice, but just the look seemed really bulky to me at address. Don't rule out Adams. They make some good equipment and they are very affordable as well. I have the RPM3 irons and love them. -
Played a round with the Q-Star today and I have to say for the price this ball performed very well for me. Still managed to slice a few, but that is me not the ball.. It felt good coming off my driver, woods, and irons, and rolled well on putts and chips. I even had an 8 iron into the 18th that bounced once and checked up leaving me a nice birdie try. For $22 per dozen this will be my ball going forward.
