  1. I have almost always used a glove just because I was told that it was better for grip. A couple times I have found myself without and although it takes a couple swings to get used to I can't say that its really felt that odd to swing without a glove on. Starting this season I think I will try playing without and see how that feels for me. I recently had some clubs made up with leather grips that really felt tacky when I was trying different grips. They are supposed to increase grip in warmer weather as well as with increased moisture. Well at least thats what they say. I will have to find out how they feel this season and I will post a thread or review on them once I actually get some rounds with them. Mitch G
  2. If you talk to some of the people at dicks sporting goods, they can do fittings for you. http://www.dicksservices.com/fittings.aspx I'm not sure what they charge but they should be able to give you a deal on it for buying your product fromt them. Mitch G Enjoy the game!
  3. I would look to buy a set of used clubs. You can check out ebay or a couple other sites. http://www.rockbottomgolf.com/ http://www.golfdiscount.com/ http://www.overstock.com/Sports-Toys/Golf-Equipment/217/dept.html One thing I would recommend is getting somewhat of a fitting. Shaft Length Shaft Flex Club Lie These will be important to help improve your game. You can get them done at many major golf facilities for a reasonable price. And some places will do it for free if you buy your clubs through them. Of course these are only suggestions so take what you feel is important and leave the rest! Good luck with your purchase! Mitch G
  4. I must say 5 wood is one of my favorite clubs to hit if I have a nice lie on the fairway or rough for those longer shots. So the 3 driver 460cc head system wouldn't work for me very well. But all the power too you, everyone has their own way of playing! Mitch G
  5. Congrats on your retirement and starting the game Don!
  6. Check http://www.louisvillegolf.com/ They aren't actual antiques. But they stock allot of good replica hickory shafted golf clubs and wood head golf clubs both for display and for playability. They also have the old style golf balls.
  7. If I'm drinking beer it's usually Alexander Keiths, MGD or San Migel Strong Ice. But generally I prefer rum. My favorite is split between a couple depending on the mood and who I'm drinking with. 1. Kraken 47% (gotta be careful with this one) 2. George Street Rum 35% (Really smooth) 3. Captain Morgan Private Stock (Like Candy) Unfortunately no pubs, or bars of any kind that I have been to serve any of this. So I will order Captain morgan spiced which used to be on top of my list. Mitch G
  8. I was using a YES! Putter. But have recently changed to the 1. Miura km-006 (370 gms) 2. Louisville EWPX-3 (Wood headed putter, thought I would try it out)
  9. Ya thats what I thought. I have left a couple msgs on the other forum, so hopefully I can get in contact with a couple different people to go golfing with. Maybe get some access to the nicer courses! Mitch G
  10. Those are great looking clubs Moparman426! And good deal on them! I just found out today I get to pick up my new set on the 31st! They initially told me my Iron set wouldn't be available until May, but they called around and got them early for me! I must say this company has impressed me every time I have dealt with them! Excellent fitters, and very high quality of customer service! Will post pictures after I pick them up! Mitch G
  11. Thanks Gian! I have posted on that forum as well and hopefully I will find some nice courses as well as some people to join. I have been reading allot about Highlands in Tagaytay but I believe I have to go with a member if I want to play that course.. Anyway, thanks again Mitch G
  12. I agree with mlf16507. Some lessons would definitely be a good idea. Maybe get to the point where you can play a round. And then you could go try some clubs out, get fitted and find out what clubs would be best for you to buy. I do suggest getting fitted for your clubs once you decide to buy. There are lots of good threads on here to give you information about that as well. Hope this helps Mitch G
  13. Welcome to the game and the forum. From my short time on this site I have found it to be really helpful as far as hints and discussions go! What are good golf courses around Manilla and the Philippines in general? I will be heading there this coming December. Mitch G
  14. In my opinion this is good advice. If you can't keep the ball in play with your driver I would keep it in the bag during rounds and work on it at the range and keep it in the bag until you can gain control of it. I would suggest using your 3 wood or 5 wood on the longer holes if you have and can control them. I hope this helps. Mitch G
  15. I agree with allot of the other posts on here. You need to test both prospective brands and figure out which ones you like better. Thats the best way to do it as far as I'm concerned. Just because some clubs are extremely expensive, it does not mean they will work for you. I hope you can find clubs that suit you! Just as a note, Miura clubs have been the best feeling clubs I have ever tried.. But thats my opinion and they may not work for you. Mitch G
  16. This is all very true, I fall into that exact example you have stated. I had a stock set of beginner clubs before which was the incorrect length for me which I could easily compensate and the incorrect lie which I didn't realize. The lie with my old clubs was with the toe of the club up a little bit and it caused me to pull the ball. I believe that flex should be adjusted for a beginner to match his or her swing specifically, again after this persons swing is relatively consistent. And to the point of the golfers swing changing over time which is true for many if not all golfers, then they should get the shafts checked and flexes adjusted. Anyway, although we don't completely agree with all of each others ideas on the subject I think you bring up some really great points! Thanks for your opinion! Mitch G
  17. I like the point you make here rustyredcab, although I do not agree. The reason I do not agree with you is because I believe shaft flex to be important for a beginner, so to get it relatively close to the individuals required flex. Once this person has increased skill to the point that the clubs do not mach their swing at all they may want different clubs or even getting their clubs re-shafted. Now in saying that. a STATIC fitting would definitely be a good idea opposed to none at all. Thanks for the input rustyredcab! Mitch G
  18. Welcome to the Forum! I hope you enjoy your time on here. There are many very knowledgeable people on here that can help with any questions you might have, and many more that are just great to chat and have discussions with! Enjoy! Mitch G
  19. Welcome to the forum! I am still relatively new but everyone has been very welcoming and helpful! As for a basic set of clubs it would depend on a variety of things, your confidence and feel of the clubs not at all being the least important. There are a couple other forum threads on the site that go over allot of these things. http://thesandtrap.com/t/55971/selecting-beginner-golf-clubs-set http://thesandtrap.com/t/53578/beginner-set-driver-vs-top-drivers http://thesandtrap.com/t/9473/which-iron-will-u-recommend-for-beginner Just to name a few. If you have already been playing and have a relatively consistent swing. And by consistent I do not mean perfect or anything like that. But a swing that you can generally replicate in most ways. Then possibly getting a minor club fitting where they can determine what club shaft flex and lengths would most suit you would be a good idea. It is a major misconception that a clubfitting is for professionals and that it is expensive. There are also lots of great forums on this site about these. Here are a few. http://thesandtrap.com/t/56446/professional-club-fitting-for-beginners http://thesandtrap.com/t/54654/club-fitting-101 http://thesandtrap.com/t/56390/buying-new-clubs-i-got-a-shock I hope this has helped you! If you have any questions feel free to ask. I am by no means a professional but I will try and give as good of information as I can. And if I don't know I will try to steer you into the right direction. There are many many knowledgeable people on this site! Enjoy, Mitch G
  20. I have heard this before as being a cause for different sets of clubs hitting different distances. Allot of times some club lofts may be adjusted higher or lower. This could make it seem like a 7 iron from one set hits like a 6 iron often referred to as de-lofting the clubs. This is of course not discounting the possibility of different clubs and shafts providing different attributes which may cause you to hit shorter or farther, just a possibility. I recently went for a club fitting as I was replacing my set, and they asked if I would like my clubs to be de-lofted. And as much as seemingly hitting further with certain clubs is appealing I decided to stick with the original lofts. That is completely up to the individual. I have also heard that some golfers will have wedges adjusted to specific lofts so they can tweak distances and feel of specific wedges. I hope this helps, Mitch G
  21. Last summer I was playing a round of golf on my own and the 2 groups in front of me were pretty slow. The guy behind me (probably in his 50s) was also playing alone so we got talking at the tee box of the 4th hole while waiting for the group in front of us to carry on. We decided to join up so we wouldn't have to wait too much and then we skipped the 4th hole just to bypass the 2 slow groups in front. As the round continued we had some great conversation, and now plan on golfing more often together. I must say it was pretty refreshing to meet some nice relaxed and personable people on the course. So often people are getting upset about other people being slow, or having bad shots. So ya. Kudos to the golfers who can make a round enjoyable Mitch G
  22. I don't think you completely understand what I mean by a consistent swing as I didn't really explain it clearly. I did not mean that every single swing is identical or that you always hit a perfect shot. What I meant by a consistant swing is that you have developed a swing that will generally be similar from the one before as well as the one after. You follow the same set up and back swing as well as follow through. I do not expect that a person should need to perfect the aspects before a club fitting or I would not have got one, or would I ever be able to if I followed that sort of standard. As far as I am concerned if a person thinks they may be interested in golf they should rent or borrow clubs for a couple sessions at the driving range, lessons or even a couple rounds. Whichever this person decides. Then once they look at buying clubs they can consider a fitting. Even if they only get the shafts adjusted for flex and length it would make a drastic difference than just buying a standard set of clubs off the shelf that may or may not be proper for that individual. In the end I think we are making the same general point, but I could have presented my information with a bit more detail. Mitch G
  23. Thanks for the post Mvmac! That is very helpfull! I had not realized the old ball theories were incorrect like that and just thought that it was some really good info Mitch G
  24. I wouldn't go as far to say that his ball flight theory is completely wrong. There are some points that are debatable. and allot of the points that he makes are very correct. Physics in my understanding does work in his theory, although maybe not quite to the extent as is suggested. I think mvmacs post is really helpful. Either way, he has allot of useful information even if you don't agree with each point he has brought up and all of his "theories". The last thing is, and one of the reasons for this forum is to share information. if you have some, then could you share it with the rest of the forum? After all many of us are here to learn new things which can be done often by understanding. Thanks for your input Tomboys Mitch G
  25. Well I read an article about ball flight theories from a guy by the name of Doug Dahle. He writes allot of articles that are really good and I was particularly interested in the Theory of Ball flight as well as the corresponding articles. I just thought I would share this with everyone as well as the rest of Doug Dahles articles. http://oldproblog.com/2010/02/introduction-to-ball-flight/ http://oldproblog.com/ I hope everyone enjoys the info! Mitch G
