I watched every shot Tiger hit on Sunday at Doral and he hit plenty of draws when he felt the need too. On the range he hit mostly pull fades but included several draws, and during the course of the round he hit several draws. Granted, they were about 3 to 4 yard push draws, small but still draws.

"Deep" Hands Explained (or "Depth")
miami8miami replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
So I've been thinking about this subject for a while now, and hopefully a few pictures will help illustrate my thoughts. When i think of deep hands, i think of Charlie Wi. His hands are on the elbow plane, shoulders have turned at a right angle to his spine and his arms have not lifted off his body. Thus, he appears to have a compact backswing. I think i have a very solid backswing too. I do the many of the same things he does during the backswing, my left shoulder goes down, hands in, arms don't lift off the ribcage. However i noticed that by the time my shoulders have turned 90 degrees, my arms are still at A3 rather than where they should be at A4. My right arm is folded at about 90 degrees, but PA 4 is not loaded across my chest. file://localhost/Users/adamico323/Desktop/Image.jpg To get any further height and depth into my backswing and to get the shaft to where A4 should b, I over rotate my shoulders to 110, even 120 degrees. file://localhost/Users/adamico323/Desktop/photo.PNG I don't know what type of compensations this can lead too on the downswing, but i would assume it is better to be closer to "the model" for lack of a better term. Because of this compensation, the hands may work just as deep as a guy like Charlie Wi, but i don't think I'm loading PA's 1 or 4 fully or fast enough by the time A4 comes. What do you guys think?- 146 replies

It looks good but form doesn't always mean function.

Weight Forward and Secondary Axis Tilt
miami8miami replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
how would a bowed left wrist at A6 affect axis tilt? would it cause the head to tip back to open up the face? Maybe even wipey push cuts right? -
Here's a face on view the same day

I keep trying to get PA's 1 and 4 down fast enough so i don't early extend, however I think my left wrist bows at the start of the downswing and causes me to tip my head back to start it near the target. This was a push fade. Any help????

well each country can have their own type of olympic qualifying tournaments, just so they can throw some amateurs in there. I think getting preoccupied with world rankings isn't necessary because if the best players in the world (including amateurs) want to prove they are the best, they'd play in the olympics simply because it would be the most international and deep field every four years.

I think it should be just like the NCAA championships. 72 hole stroke play, top four scores out of five on each team count. Top 3 get the hardware, playoff for ties in each position. Top 16, or 8 teams, depending on how many teams there actually are, go to match play, then you let them duke it out for the team gold. Caddies are allowed.

"Deep" Hands Explained (or "Depth")
miami8miami replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
How many degrees ideally should your hands move inward on the backswing? Around twenty? I'd say that picture of Charlie is about twenty degrees in from the ball give or take.- 146 replies

Weight Forward and Secondary Axis Tilt
miami8miami replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Mvmac, what are some drills that you do to keep te left shoulder low to prevent too much fake axis tilt? It seems that you and I have similar issues. -
so do you set up with a severely flared out right foot at address to practice PA 1 unloading faster? I would assume it promotes more linear hips with PA 1 being able to unload faster.

Weight Forward and Secondary Axis Tilt
miami8miami replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Tiger's swing isnt perfect, but it's getting pretty close. you can play good golf with a little faked axis tilt. Several great players have created real axis tilt but also fake axis tilt by sliding the hips forward. Notice that at A6, Tiger's left knee is in front of his left ankle, this shows how much the hips have slid and how much weight has moved to the front foot. -

Mvmac, if you keep the left shoulder low and release pa's 1 and 4 like Grant does in that picture, wouldn't that shift the path out exessively to the right causing pushes and hooks? -
Could the right knee be flexed too much in the downswing due to a lack of straightening in the backswing??
-
Would a good drill be to set up with the right leg straight and hit balls to the finish?
-
I have a question regarding the hip slide. Once the hips begin sliding, the right foot banks as a result of the hips moving to the left. So for a player who has enough lateral hip motion but too much rotational motion (the right heel lifting off the ground too early) to keep the right heel on the ground longer and bank, would it feel like the right leg stays straight thru impact and into the follow through?

Weight Forward and Secondary Axis Tilt

Sorry thats kind of a personal term. It means unloading of the PA's. They don't actually fully unload until somewhere around A8 I'm guessing. -
Weight Forward and Secondary Axis Tilt

So doing this is more biased to launching the ball high and swinging out on the ball more because PA's 1 and 4 are zeroing out while the hips and shoulders are staying closed for a longer period of time rather than opening (like Tiger Woods's practice swings). Feeling like the left shoulder stays down longer also keeps the left arm in more at A5 rather than it shifting out to the toe-stance line as in a CP release, am I correct? This is all in an effort to have sufficient "real" axis tilt and not faked (head tipping back) axis tilt. -

Quote: I'm not too sure what you mean when you mean by keeping the shoulders steep as I transfer into the downswing. Should it feel as if you keep your left shoulder in place and lower PA's 1 and 4? -
Extending the Right Knee on the Backswing
miami8miami replied to Zeph's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
If the trail knee retained its flex or didn't straighten enough one would expect the head to move down and right, am I correct? -
Extending the Right Knee on the Backswing
miami8miami replied to Zeph's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Is the rate of the right knee straightening indicative of what shot you may be hitting? Meaning with a push draw pattern would the right knee straighten more than when hitting a pull fade/ straight shot? Also, does straightening the right knee enough help keep the head steady by letting the spine extend more? -
From the swings that I've looked at on YouTube it seems he hits pull fades to straight fades, although I've seen him draw a few drives at doral. His A's are almost textbook for an efficient cp release. Not only that but he's a fantastic putter and is very even keeled on the course. What do you guys think?
