Hello from Myrtle Beach

Good for you. Hope your wife likes golf. That should be a pre-requisite for any guy who's addicted to the game. -
Eric, Looks like you must watch the golf channel too much like other people I know. Your prediction appears to be rather good, and I suspect you're correct cause you use Titleist equipment. Bye the way, I need a new putter, my putter is from 1980 and really bad. I do OK with it but my PRO says I'd be a lot better of with the newer types. Any suggestions on a Titleist model?

You're so lucky to be where the courses are OPEN for the winter. I'm up here in Michigan and we have about a foot of snow. I played "2 buckets of balls", that's about the best we can do till May. Congratulations on your -1 and your 76

I may take lessons this spring from Brad Dean (top instructor in Michigan) and he swears by them. It would be so nice to finally have something that doesn't wear out nor let lost along the way. And I guess the best part of it is that it doesn't tear up the greens. If I do buy these this spring, I'll give the SandTrap my comments.

This particular post is very interesting to me as I bought my first set of clubs this last April, Touredge irons and wedges and love them very much. I suspect they are better than me at the moment but after reading many posts here I suspect in a year or so I'll be shopping again, maybe for the better TourEdge irons or maybe for something else.

You're so lucky to be able to play golf. Can I ask a question, you played even in the snow. How may I do that without gettting evicted for tresspassing? Also, the high temps here have been in the low 30's and high 20's so I need to wait until the grass is not frozen. I miss golfing so much. Guess I need to get to know the owners of the courses and make preparations to play in the snow with their blessings for next winter.

Here's the answer from a beginner, sort of. I took three lessons this April. By the end of the season I was shooting about 8 over after playing only like 9 rounds during the summer. How'd I do it. Hitting balls at the driving range three times a week and hitting them mostly correct rather than like so many people who go to the driving range to clobber the balls, and along with that about 1-2 hours on the practice green chipping and putting. And now, during winter, I practice every day, indoors putting and chipping. Next summer I hope to get my handicap as close to 0 as possible. I'm sure you can get under 10 with no problem. And I so much agree, you must have an instructor you really like and believe in as it gives you the motivation to do better.

I'm no pro, fairly new to the game but do believe in tournament play it's a disqualification is the previous ball is inbounds and playable. I"ll be interested in hearing the pro's comments on this as I'm waiting to receive my copy of The Rules of Golf.

I just read about GreenSpikes. Sounds like something i may want to order as they don't tear up the greens and are guaranteed to stay in your shoes for 12 months. Anyone ever try them?

That's a good point about the golf balls. I've noticed many of the driving ranges have worn out balls or low grade balls. It's a shame though when I hit the drive past the end of the driving range as it must be lot's or work finding balls in the field and trees beyond. Are you one who pickes up the balls with the little cart? Is everyone like me and likes to hit a moving target?

I started back at golf last April and tried several. The one item I really appreciate having is the David Leadbetter Swing Setter. It was a key factor in improving my follow through. I also think Erik is right-on with self created aids. I swing the 5,6,7 irons together when I'm warming up. The extra weight really does help get the swing flow smooth as well as helps the body to stretch. I did try other aids like the clubs that swivel on the shaft but found my swing rarely if ever broke the swivel so I sent them back.

Guys, I really think it's not going to help lifting weights. I would think bulky muscles would make it difficult to control the swing and the direction of the ball path. I spent my last winter in a health club doing aerobics and spinning and what they call 'boot camp' (all about three times a week). These are all aerobic type of exercises that help the body build strength without bulk, create tremendous flexability, and tone all the muscles, not just some of them. I am a long ball hitter because of this. I really think more guys would improve their drives with this type of training, not weight lifting.

Hi Dave, I bought a super light mountain bike about 7 years ago and will never regret it. I also owned an ultra-light road bike but only the $1500 type back about 15 years ago. Ended up wearing it out. This spring I'll buy a new road bike, probably the ultra lights. I was an avid runner as well when I was younger. I would say cycling is better for your knees and body than running, especially if you're over 29. For those that have never been on an ultralight road bike your missing a major thrill. It's so much easier and enjoyable than the inexpensive heavier bikes and it's a great way to stay in shape.

So, where's your web page with the golf content for all of us to read?

Anyone know how to obtain a quality launch monitor for a low cost? I have a friend who has a zero handicap and is a wonderful certified instructor. He would like to purchase a launch monitor but really doesn't have the money. Anyone know of a good used launch monitor, or a factory refurbished one, or have any other suggestions. I told him I'd come to Cincinnati for some instruction if he gets the launch monitor so he's counting on me to help him find one that is affordable for someone who teaches on a low budget. Any generous golfers out there want to help a wonderful guy get his business into second gear? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, any comments about the best launch monitors would be helpful.

Erik, thanks for the suggestion. Watching the pro's on TV I do see very smooth swings. I think if I keep my swing speed reasonable the regular might be the right shaft after reading several replies. Thanks all.

Great Idea. I'll wait till Spring when the driving ranges open back up and do exactly that at Crystal Mountain.

OK, humm, confusing a bit to me. If I should be hitting a stiff driver (the pga pro says I should) but I really like my r7 with Reg graphite, what would a stiff graphite probably do for me? What would a still steel probably do? I can control the ball straight, draw, or slice with my current club.

Up north we don't have much choice as there's no golf. I train by doing what's called skate skiing about three times a week.

What I learned is to drive the best I can, but back off about 10% on maximum effort and I usually end up in the fairway with drives of 270 or better. Most guys I play with try to muscle the ball and end up with disasterous shots off the tee way to often. I agree, it's the combination of everything but the short game must be GREAT as it accounts for 2/3rds or more of all your shots.

Do you play better with better players?
Touredgegal replied to Maverick's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I just started back at the game this summer and did well playing single. I did have the opportunity to finally play with a guy who was really, really good and we met on the 8th tee and played through another 18 holes. Up through the seventh tee we both were shooting par (he was a little under par) and after that we both fell apart on your short game. I was more concerned about hitting a good shot so he would be impressed and that's what made my game fall apart. Lesson learned I hope " I'm the only person I need to impress!" The rest will fall in place.
