They are in Houston, which has been largely without power, phone, internet, etc. since Hurricane Ike hit last weekend.

I don't consider 20+ HC'ers to be crappy golfers. The only things that really bother me are slow play and someone giving me "tips" on the tee box.

Thanks for all the help

Does anyone know where to find a chart that compares/relates 5 iron swing speed to driver swing speed? Thanks in advance, cvlngineer

I ran across a great website on the physics of golf. Some of you may have already discovered it, but for those who haven't, give it a look: TUTELMAN Enjoy, Cvlngineer

Any mechanical engineers in here working in the golf industry?
cvlngineer replied to gills's topic in Golf Talk
I am a civil engineer, working in highway design/construction. I think it would be fantastic working in the golf industry, but I doubt that they are looking for civils. Best of luck to you in school, all of the hard work is worth it! -
Question About Receiving Lessons
cvlngineer replied to cvlngineer's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
m11, I do trust the guy's opinion. He is one heck of a golfer. I chose to take lessons due to my dismal GIR percentage. I average only around 33%, and if I could bring that up, it would make a BIG difference. I had an unbelieveable round a couple of weeks ago (2 over par) and the only difference was I hit more greens. I am not an exceptional ball-striker, and that is what I want to get better at. I've only been playing for a little over a year, so hopefully my bad habits weren't ingrained so far that it will take another year to get rid of them. This Saturday's lesson covered putting and chipping. He COMPLETELY changed my putting stroke, but it feels much better than my old one. I just have to get a feel for distance with the new one. -
Question About Receiving Lessons
cvlngineer replied to cvlngineer's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
He changed my grip and swing path a little. He also shortened my backswing a bit, since I was over rotating my shoulders. He did not make any drastic changes, and it did give me a more consistent ball flight. The first couple of rounds following the lesson were really pretty good. Last Wednesday, however, I had a horrible round and it really got in my head. I followed it up with another not so good round on Saturday. On Sunday, I had a more respectable round. On Wed. and Sat. I was thinning a lot of my iron shots, but I did figure out where I deviated from his suggestions. Sunday was better. Maybe Wed. was just not my day, and since it killed my confidence, it carried over into Saturday. Does that sound right? -
That doesn't really sound too far fetched. I was an 11, but shot a string of rounds at 72-78-78-83-77. My handicap started going down at that point. I only average 33% GIR, but on those days I just hit more greens.

I decided to start taking weekly golf lessons from the pro at my home course. The guy is really good, and the things he has shown me really make sense. I have had two lessons so far. I have read, on this forum, that you will get worse before you get better. I am at the "worse" part now. Everything works great on the range while he is doing the lessons, but on the course, not so much. My scores are bordering on obscene. I do not say, "to heck with it," and go back to my old swing during a crappy round, I just keep trying to apply what he has taught me. If all of this will lead to a more consistent and repeatable swing, it will be worth it. My question is, about how long does this slump generally last? Thanks, cvlngineer

I lean more towards the hit and hope swing.

Man, I felt pretty good before. A year ago I was a 38 handicap. I thought I was progressing pretty well, but now I am ashamed.

I was in the pro shop the other day and saw some belly putters. I had never even seen one, so I had to try them. It felt fantastic, so I bought one. I have been putting very well, for me, with my conventional putter recently, but I am going to try the belly putter out. I have always been a square to square putter, so this will be quite a change for me. My question is: If I just can not get used to this style of putting, can I have the shaft of this putter cut down to 35" like my normal putter? It is a Rossa Monza Spider putter, which is the putter I have had my eye on, so I would like to keep it if at all possible. Thanks, cvlngineer

Congrats on the BOMB!

You weren't in the wrong. That guy was just a jerk. Kudos to you for helping teach your buddy the game, wherever you did it and whatever handicap you or he has.

I just took some video of my swing, and I have never seen any of the pros bent over this much at address. Here is a link: SWING VIDEO Thanks, cvlngineer

I don't know what happened, but all of a sudden I can not hit my short irons. I am pushing all of them LOW and RIGHT. I thought it was the shanks, but I think I am actually leaving the face open or something. When I try to adjust, I get a monster draw or a dead pull. It all started a week or so ago. I had been hitting my wedges better than I ever had before. Then on one shot it happened, a low-right worm burner. I have been unable to completely get rid of this mess. Some days are worse than others, but I don't have confidence over the ball with them any more. I am not having this problem with the long irons. Has anyone had this problem before, and if so, how did you get rid of it? Thanks, cvlngineer

I use a program called Caddy Master Pro. I think it costs around $20 or so. It keeps stats as well. Scorecard looks better, but I don't want to reenter all of my past rounds and courses.

You guessed it......Taylormade

It very well could be! LOL, I didn't swing easy on that 3 iron. I didn't have anything but a ball to lose, so I went after it pretty hard. Thanks, I hope so too! I have been hovering between 78-83 for awhile now, but I have never gone that low. If I hadn't shanked a couple of wedge shots, I may have finished even. I had two penalty strokes, one on 10 and one on 11, that resulted in bogey, double-bogey.

Thanks! I was pretty stoked! The TPs hit pretty well. They are about a club longer than my old set, so I just swung easy to keep them the same as what I was used to. I did have to see what they would do on one occasion though. I hit my normal tee shot with my driver, then I had some time until the group in front of me cleared the green, so I hit my 3 iron. It went 237 yards (I measured with my golf gps) and I could not believe it. My driver only went 30 yds further, kinda sad, lol. Thanks. No, it didn't bother me too much. I was trying to get two birdies, but I could not get my approach shots close enough. It usually takes me awhile to get used to new irons too, but these don't feel a whole lot different than my old set. There is just less offset, so I don't have to worry so much about hitting SEVERE draws.

I played my home course today with my new irons and for the first time ever, I made the turn at even par. I ended the round at 2 over for a 72. It all came down to #18. I needed to eagle it to shoot even. It is a par 5, and after my drive I was 180 out. So I proceeded to chunk my 5 iron to around 50 yds out. I carried my chip shot too far, and two putted for a par. I was sooo close!

I am working on it!
