  1. I find that all the expensive balls tear up pretty quickly regardless of make so I'm always ready to use a couple of balls per round. The NXT Tour just seems to have a completely different feel off the putter than all the other balls I've tried (not just the expensive ones). It's just funny that most golfers I meet along the way insist on using Pro V's and wouldn't even consider such a 'budget' ball. Glad to hear I'm not alone!
  2. I have played many rounds with various balls, namely, Pro V1, Pro V1X, Taylor Made Red and Black, Nike One Black and Platinum and Callaway's Tour i and Tour ix. I haven't found any significant difference in distance although the harder balls do fly straighter (Pro V1X, Nike One Black etc) Anyway, I stumbled up Titleist's NXT Tour and had a great round with it and have continued to use the ball interspersed with using other brands. What I find noticeably different is the feel off the putter face which is considerably different from all the other balls. It feels very, very soft which make it so much easier to dial in distance on the greens. I don't find a significant differences between the other balls but the NXT Tour feels great. Try it out.
  3. I've been on a mission to go from complete novice to scratch in a year (I was a little late due to injury) but this book is unbelievable. I couldn't actually recommend any other book or video and I've read and watched MANY of them. Funnily enough I hated one of his 'drills' dvd but the book is highly, highly recommended. Thanks Jim!
  4. FACT: Golf is ONLY as popular as it is now because of Tiger... it was a dying sport pre-Tiger I would like to see what kind of turnover golf equipment companies made pre tiger and post tiger
  5. I haven't read through all 19 pages of this post so not sure if this was already mentioned... I swing around 110-115mph and used to hit the ball 240yds but with proper technique it now goes 280-290yds. I always had the swing speed but my backspin used to be quite high (3,500-4,500rpm). I am now hitting up on the ball which has dropped that down to 2,500rpm. My point is... swing speed alone cannot be the sole requirement for long drives. I too always hear about 300 yrd drives but have yet to see anyone abouve a 15 handicap hit it more than 260
  6. take a look at your position 5 seconds into the video. you are swinging horizontally round the body instead of round and up to behind your head/ above your right shoulder
  7. I'm not sure if this website has already been mentioned but... I decided to teach myself through trial and error after many unsuccessful lessons... lessons from pros who do not fully understand the complexities of the golf swing. Along the way I stumbled across a site that completely de-mystified the swing and introduced me to its true mechanics. I played about 4 years ago for 2 years with a completely repeatable swing that was straight but not very far ( a swing based or dalton's 'hit it straighter than you can point'). I played off a 17. After my 4 year lay-off I decided to take a year off try and get down to scratch. I was completely confused when watching the the pros on tv hit an 8 iron 180 yards whilst my (100mph) iron swing only netted 120yards. I could swing the driver at 112mph but only carried 210 yards. I persuit of my goal I knew I needed a decent swing and this site helped me get from shooting 100 in February to my best score of 77 just this morning. http://perfectgolfswingreview.net/index.html Enjoy.
  8. You have to understand and analyse your swing properly. Video analysis and a launch monitor will reveal a whole heap of things. I used to swing the club up to 112mph but could only drive 210 yards... this was because of my steep angle of approach which caused too much backspin (5-6000rpm). After much work that figure has come down to 3000rpm and distances are up to 280 yards. Just wanted to pint out that it's not all about power and swing speed... Ernie Els is a prime example... you'd think his ball only went 180 the way he swings and it's shocking to see it 300 yards down the fairway.
  9. I had exactly the same problem. People were probably tired of playing a round with me when I couldn't hit one clean shot but all the time I would tell them I'm awesome on the range. I used to hit anywhere from 1000-2000 balls a day, 6-8 hours. The problem with the range is that you can groove your swing to a particular club, your body can adapt amazingly well. If you study your performance closely you may discover that you'll pick up say a 7i hit a few duff shots and then hit the next 20 clean, pick up a 6i, hit a couple of duff shots and then hit the next 20 clean etc etc etc... What you must practice is hitting different clubs one after the other... I hit a driver, then a 3 wood or 3i then a pitch.... then i'll hit the driver then a 7i or a 5i then a pitch.... just like you would on a course. Ultimately you're doing exacly as you would do on the golf course.
  10. Tiger is definitely the man, not only for what he has done on the golf course but what he has done to golf. I am 34 but when I was growing up golf was a game for stuffy old men. Tiger completely revoloutionised the game by bringing in the youth. Just take a look at the TV ratings if Tiger is playing compared to if he's not.... the figures even drop dramatically if he's not in contention to win. He is solely responsible for the huge money offered on tour to the players and the whole golfing industry owes him for their multi-billion dollar turnovers.
  11. I tried this tip on the course yesterday. As crazy as it sounds and as CRAZY as it feels it definitely worked exceptionally well on long putts. I still used the convential method from 6-8 feet in but do give this a try on long putts if you're having trouble. It feels wierd but if you think about all the other sports that you swing looking at the target as opposed to the ball.... tennis, soccer, cricket etc... even shooting pool!!
  12. I only took a look at your 6 iron video... you are swinging over the top, probably because you are over swinging. Check out the angle of your takeaway compared to your swing down. You will know when you're swinging over the top by your finish... I guess you crack your golf club on that bone on the back of your neck at your finish because the club is coming vertically over your shoulder. Notice that a low handicapper will finish with the club wrapping round their neck with it far, far more horizontal.
  13. I tried this briefly the other day at the range. Looking up before hitting the ball felt very strange but somehow I kept striking the ball very sweetly time after time. My only reservation was a certain loss of feel for swing speed when using this technique with a PW when seeking the pin because I was purely turning my shoulders to swing the club through.
  14. I have basically taken 6 months off work with the aim of getting down from a 24 handicap to a 4/5. I'm currently playing off a 9 after 3 months hard work at the range and on the course. I usually spend anywhere from 2 to 8 hours at the range 5-6 days a week! Crazy hey!!! Anyway, after trying various teachers I have found them to be pretty useless... they only seem to have the ability to record your swing and show you how different it is to Tigers... like I didn't know that to begin with. So I am basically self taught and have found that I have been picking up important snippets along the way and steadily building my swing. I had a pretty steady swing but wasn't content with mediocre distances and really strived to swing like a pro (my previous 'casting' swing was very reliable but lacked distance). Anyway, to cut a long story short... one of my biggest and latest discoveries to accuracy, distance AND the ability to 'lag' was to get the proper wrist cock. I have only ever been told/taught to cock the left wrist up.... this left it cupped at the top of the back swing... I now cock the right wrist back on itself (which straightens the left wrist). It was very awkward at first but that was trying to get rid of old muscle memory. I instantly scored in every area of my swing... distance, accuracy, reliability and crazy back spin when landing on the greens. You can actually hear how sweet the strike is. Try it out????
