Help with a new shaft for my hybrid
jscomp replied to Jakester23's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Is that the shaft you have in the other irons? -
Experimenting with the "Baseball" Grip
jscomp replied to stogiesnbogies's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Wow. Never thought I'd see e-beef on a golf forum. That was almost as exciting as watching golf. -
Regarding TT Lite XL and Multi-step Lite, what's it say on the shaft itself (not the sticker)? And when building irons with cheap shafts that don't have tight tolerances, is it a good idea to assemble them in ascending order by pre-cut weight from long to short irons? Any other tips for getting a reasonably consistent set with cheap shafts?

They come with Dynalites, right? Those are low bend point/high trajectory shafts. I suppose a high bend point/low trajectory shaft would be in order. If you want comparable weight, Dynamic Gold SL. According to True Temper's "shaft fit" you're either S300 or X300 depending on your tempo (moderate or fast, respectively).

Forgot about that one. lol

Hand anatomy for reference: http://www.assh.org/Public/HandAnatomy/Pages/default.aspx 1) Is there supposed to be play in the grip, or is the club supposed to be immovable in the grip? (Please verify by checking your grip throughout the swing, slowly if it helps.) 2)What's the correct left thumb contact with the grip? A) Entire left thumb lays on the grip. B) Only the thenar eminence and distal phalanx make contact with the grip (with the metacarpophalangeal joint flexed and interphalangeal joint extended). C) Only the thumb's distal phalanx should be touching the grip. 3) If you remove the glove, is your grip still secure throughout the swing or does the club shift around? 4) Do different fingers and areas of the palm apply different pressure at different points in the swing? If so, how and where? 5) Do any fingers change position during the swing, and is this normal or proper? (In my case, my left thumb's metacarpophalangeal joint has a tendency to hyperextend towards the top of the backswing unless I make a conscious effort to flex it in order to support the club. Also, my left hand middle, ring and pinky fingers tend to loosen a bit in response to gravity and the club's momentum at the top of the backswing.)

@saevel25 Great. Another "matching" thingy to worry about. lol @trickyputt You're a gentleman and a scholar. I will definitely read between the lines. About the grip, that's always confused and frustrated me. Grip charts say I should use standard, but those extra jumbo grips I made from women's standard grips and Winn wrap just felt right. But maybe it's because I grip it wrong, even though the few pros I've consulted either said my grip looks fine or didn't even mention it. It's funny, I vaguely remember--as in, I can make myself remember--a pro a long time ago telling me I don't cock my wrists enough at the top of my backswing and I release it to early in the downswing. I wonder if my grip is really the culprit. I suppose I should post in the technique section. @mvmac Contact probably isn't as consistent as with my old irons. Someone else mentioned that the different grip size and different shaft flex and weight probably have me swinging a bit differently.

So... any word from Cali? lol PS - Golfsmith Professional Grind blades were THE best irons of ANY kind EVER. And that's not my opinion. That's objective, universal truth.

Isn't the club a bit more upright through impact than at address? And doesn't the shaft bend in such a way as to exaggerate this a little? So wouldn't you WANT a club that rests more on the heel than in the middle of the sole at address? I've never been fitted in person. Do live fittings base lie angle recommendation on a snapshot of the clubhead through impact, shot dispersion, or how the clubhead rests at address? Basically, I'm looking to put together a set from components and want to know if I should let the retailer bend the heads based on an accompanying height/wrist-to-floor chart, or assemble them as-is and then go to a place like Golfsmith to be fitted for lie and have them bend the finished clubs.

@saevel25 Wow, thanks! Very interesting. I didn't realize 1035 was about 25% harder than 1025. That probably does contribute. @ccotenj I actually thought of that, too, but kinda forgot about it. We're talking around 1997-2005. I used to use Maxfli. I think they were XS Tour. I just spent a decent amount of time googling old Maxfli balls and the packaging on those rang the most bells. Whether it was the XS Tour or something else, I do remember being extremely disappointed when it was discontinued, as other balls I tried weren't as soft-feeling and didn't have that sweet, delicate click on impact. Other than extreme distance balls, they all say "soft" cover now. So that doesn't help. :/

That's probably it. I definitely feel like it's a bit of a struggle with the stiffer shaft and smaller grip. I'm hoping the bigger grip takes care of things. It just really bothers me that most grip fitting charts tell me I need "standard" size grips. But even jumbo feels like it shifts around a bit at the top of my swing. Makes me think I'm not gripping the club right, though a local pro took a quick look and said my grip looks right. *extreme cognitive dissonance*

Was my post tl;dr? lol No one's really answering the questions. I guess the answer is "probably" for each. Stronger flex, smaller & firmer grip, slightly harder metal. They all probably contribute to impact feel. I was trying to figure out which is the biggest culprit. I've decided to try Jumbomax grips first, since changing grips is the easiest and cheapest thing to do, and since I've always felt "jumbo" is still a bit small. I also preferred the lighter swingweight of my previous clubs. Just wish I had thought to google "golf extra jumbo grips" years ago. lol

Does anyone use a 5 wood anymore?
jscomp replied to TidePride50's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
HELL YEAH! My favorite club. And it was always a cheapo, too. First was a graphite shafted Wilson Staff with an odd but cool cement-looking finish. Now it's a steel-shafted Golfsmith/Lynx thingy. -
Hey all. Years ago I put together a set of Golfsmith blades with Dynamic Gold R300 shafts and Winn wrap--the kind you actually wrapped around the shaft! lol And I wrapped it over a lady's grip instead of its own sleeve, so it came out jumbo and VERY cushiony. Eventually I felt the shafts were too flexible and I was wary of reshafting them, so I got Gigagolf blades with Dynamic Gold SL S300 shafts and Winn G8 jumbo grips (firm). But I think the shafts are a little too stiff, plus impact feels more like a spoon on wood than a hot knife through butter. The Golfsmith irons were made of 1025 or 1030 carbon steel (don't remember which), and the Gigagolf ones of 1035. Is that enough to make a difference in feel through impact? Does going from plush to firm grips change the feel through impact? Or is it mainly the shaft flex? PS - Does anyone still make a DIY wrap-on grip like Winn used to?
