three new videos of my swing! Help me out
tehdeuce replied to justinmill14's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
It looks like you take the club too far inside on your take away. I commonly do this, and have worked hard to fix it. Do you commonly push/slice the ball? Or hit the ball of the heel of the club? I had these common problems when I was too far inside on the back swing. -
Transferring range to the course

I hit like a pro off mats... off grass... different story :) -
Touche, he said he was a scratch golfer, but I have never seen him play, personally. Although I've seen him place at state tournaments, etc.

I am very confused at what wedges I should carry, in both loft and bounce. I currently have a 47* PW from my MP57 set, and have previously only used an old SW that I really liked, 56*. I use it only because I have been comfortable using it near the green. It is time for me to buy two more wedges and discard the old 56*. I'm probably going to go with some Vokey's or Cleveland's. I am just numb to the best setup for me. I am pretty convinced that I should go 56/60, or 52/56. The reason being so that I can add another wedge once I feel comfortable dropping a wood or long iron. But which setup and what bounce characteristics are going to give me the best setup? I currently hit my PW 110-115. Sometimes I actually connect and get it 140, but that's been rare lately. My current 56* I can hit about 85 yards. Bounce, who knows...? I'm clueless Any recommendations?

I Push. Common causes? Common solutions?
tehdeuce replied to mellojoe's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I tend to have the same tendency. The only person who has seen my swing and commented said they feel that I don't release my hands on some swings. When I do I get a nice swing and ball flight, but when my release is off, I often push the ball.... Not to mention I strike the ball with the heel of the club often. -
Indeed, I was referring to which type of grip you choose - overlapping, baseball, interlocking. The grip of the club, of course, is extremely important, maybe the most important part of the swing, but not what you decide to do with your index finger.
-
Playing baseball my whole life, 10 fingers feels natural to me, although I've toyed with interlocking at times. It is my opinion that which grip you choose isn't going to have an impact on your golf ability, assuming you hold everything else constant/do not have other glaring flaws.

I'd say it was well worth getting the fitting. Even if you have a decent idea about what you *should* be hitting, you still still learn a lot about your swing and different clubs. The person who fit me, who happens to be a scratch golfer, was able to give me some swing tips as well. I think it was constructive, not perfect, but golf never is....

I was fitted today and was able to see my shot pattern on a variety of clubs. An extremely common feature of my shot pattern was to hit the ball a bit toward the heel side of the club. We shortened the club about 1/4 to 1/2 and this helped with my hits. The fitter also figured me to need 2* flatter in my irons. I'm 5'9 with 33.5 wrist to floor. My iron swing speed was measured between 80-95mph. I hit about 96, 97 a few times. When I swung nice and easy, I would be around 81-86. He fitted me in stiff shafts for my irons. My driver was also measured into the 100's. Stiff flex here as well. On a 10.5 degree G10 I was hitting the ball 270-290, but lots and lots of spin. Moved me the 9* and I was not getting over 240, but at this point I was a bit tired and not making very good contact. The fitter, who is a scratch golfer, told me that i struggled with my release of the hands, and thus caused me to lead with the heel of the club, thus heel hits. What can I do to change my pattern to making better contact? I am sure lessons will help me with my overall fundamentals, but my swing felt pretty good, just the same old problem - open club face with weak release causing these heel hits. Does anyone have any thoughts or tips or comments? Thanks, B PS, the clubs I hit the best and felt best using were the Mizuno MP-57

Continuing to work on my swing... have a look

Rubbery - Could you describe what cupping my wrist means? I have never heard this before? m11 - what is swinging to 1 o clock? When I watched the videos in Slo-mo myself, I noticed I take my hands very far inside. I was going to work on keeping them in front of my chest. I do have a slice with my driver which I think happens due to an open face/outside swing. To answer your question: My normal ball flight on a well struck ball is a nice straight shot or a slight push to the right of my target. I am inconsistent to a large degree right now though. Sometimes I hit a draw, pull the ball a bit, push the ball, shank :( every so often. Thanks for your analysis and the tips! CG - I hear you. I can already tell you that I choke when the ball is in front of me. I'll get vids at the range soon... Thanks. -
Hey guys, I am planning on going to a local golf center here in Fredericksburg, VA to be fitted and purchase a new set of clubs. I have never had my own clubs, but as I've graduated college and started into a life of responsibility; I have somehow finally found a passion for golf. Golf was always something I would do with my dad once every few years. I was good enough to get around the course, being a natural athlete, baseball player, but never a good player. I've decided to try get serious about my golf game. I go to the range 3 times a week usually, and try to play once. Are game improvement irons a good choice for me at my level, ability, and given my goals to really focus and become a decent player? The clubs I use now are a set my grandfather made from golfsmith materials. It says it is a bi-axial weighted cavity back head. I certainly can feel a good hit vs a bad one. Some TrueTemper shaft. I hit my friends very low level, cheap set of clubs (Cougar?). It had an offset, and looked very chunky. They felt the same no matter how I hit it. This is a sensation I have never felt. I don't have a good or bad opinion on that feeling, it is just different then what I am used to. Would high quality GI irons be like this? Although I am a 20ish handicap. A big reason this number is high is because my Fairways Hit stat is probably about 10%. I never find the fairway due to a push/slice with my driver/3 wood. My putting is good, and my iron play is decent, although a bit short. I don't feel that I am a great ball striker yet. Does anyone have an opinion on a good direction for me to take in the way of new clubs? Thanks, Bryan

I agree with the others posts. One thing I don't necessarily agree with is the grip suggested above ( -

Hey bologna, I've watched that video about 20 times over the past 2 days. Haha! I've also been taking a look at Moe Norman videos. I think my problem (one of many) with my current setup/swing/equipment is that the lie of the club is "heel-down" in my current set up. The club, which I believe is standard needs a slightly higher swing arc. I think if I keep the arc of my swing equal to what the club should be, I will have better results. Also, I need to learn to keep my hips level and rotate better. Also, it isn't that money is an issue to take lessons - I work full-time/live alone/low expenses - but I'm just trying to save for something expensive, involving a special woman in my life. Thanks to all for your comments! B -

KS, thank you for your comments. My dad used to always tell me I don't drive with my hips enough. In golf and in baseball. I know I need to learn to rotate the hips, does anyone have any analogy or drill that might help me rotate them instead of just simply pushing and raising them through? And you assessment of me topping the ball is correct. I have found that I do that in my new swing. I actually try to really post on my front leg on the down swing, should I have a more neutral weight? I find it hard to make a good divot, so I feel that swinging down is better if I am going to achieve this.... maybe not. Bryan -

Mikelaw, thanks for watching the video. My plane is a bit flatter because I am going for that on purpose. I certainly don't want it to be too flat, but I know for a fact that my previous swing path was very over the top, but I was finding the best results from this so I just stuck with it. I feel like that video shows the swing OKAY, but my arms and shoulders don't line up like they should, but the club head hits the original plane to a decent degree. Unfortunately, the practice range showed that something is way off, because I was hitting the ball so poorly. My ball placement is generally one ball ahead of center for my irons. Sometimes a bit farther up. I am going to go to a pro shop and my swing measured out to see what they think. I look forward to hearing what others have to say, Thanks! -
Hey all. I am new here and new to golf. I am an ex-baseball player through high school and college, and have picked up golf now. I don't have enough money for lessons, but I do have free access to my local practice range and course. So I try to play a lot when I am not working. I am trying to make the proper transition to a one-plane swing. I feel this will be better in the long run. I have already decided I am going to go get fit for a set of clubs, so that's next. But in the mean time I am trying to learn this swing. I have been using a very upright/over the top swing that has produced decent results, but I have a push/slice tendency. I spent today on the range trying this new one-plane swing and it went absolutely horrible. Hitting things fat, pushing everything. I must still be doing things wrong. I watch lots of online videos and take note on instruction. Does anyone have any comments on this attached video. I would love to hear what you have to say. I am already aware that there are many flaws. I have analyzed all my videos using computer software. I guess I am just looking for others opinions and comments. Thanks, B

I'm a fan of Tiger just because I "attempt" to model my swing plane like his. Jack will always have a special place, though.
