Interesting, this sounds like a pretty good idea. I'll definitely be giving it a try the next time I get out to the putting green.
-
I usually spend a fair amount of time on the practice green before my round and yesterday I thought I had a good feel for speed, but when I got out on the course it was a different story. This putting green was like an actual green too, not just a flat, rectangle one that a lot of courses have, so I felt good about my putting going into the round. Once I got out on the course though, I was shooting putts past the hole when I thought I needed to give it a little more and leaving them short when I thought I just needed to give it a little tap.

The problem with golf is that it's always been a sport for the upper class and it really hasn't changed its ways much to accomodate those with less money. Courses make obscene amounts of money on a yearly basis and still find it necessary to charge pretty hefty prices.

After yesterday on the course I realized that my main problem with putting is speed. I'd say I'm pretty good at reading the break and picking a decent line, but I have some big issues with speed. I can never seem to put long putts close enough to where I have a tap in or a fairly easy look for a two putt, which leads to a lot of three putts for me. Any suggestions on judging speed or any drills to help with it, or does being able to judge speed just come with more experience?

I played 27 holes yesterday and we had a cart. This was the first course I've played at that gave you a wet towel in the cart to wipe down your clubs with after each shot. It was the first time I've seen it and I thought it was awesome. I mean, I'd rather use their towel to wipe down my clubs than to use the $15 towel I ordered online and have that get all crapped up with mud and dirt. Is this common for a lot of courses?

Kudos to my course for trying to keep me alive

That's a great gesture. In the summer heat, it's hard not to take a cart, especially on courses where elevation shifts from one extreme to the next. I just can't stand paying the outrageous cart fees anymore. These courses are making plenty of money as it is, yet they charge so much for cart rentals. -
Master Teeing Off With an Iron Thread
jrode replied to GlobeGuy's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Yep, same here. I never tee my irons high at all. I tee them as low as possible so there's hardly any room between the ball and the ground. A long time ago I would tee up my irons high and I'd just end up getting under them and hitting them like 100 yards. -

I never used a tee up until recently when I discovered that when I teed it up and gave myself a perfect lie, I started playing Par 3's a heck of a lot better. Almost all the pros tee it up on Par 3's, why shouldn't I? -
Last fall I played a round with two of my friends and we were drinking the night before, so my buddy decided it'd be a good idea to bring along the jug of Jim Beam and some bottles of Coke from the night before. Well, after two or three holes, we were just having a terrible time. I understand some people like the challenge, but it was late September here in Wisconsin and we picked the worse day to golf. It was unusually cold, probably mid 40's with constant wind. The course we went to is usually windy to begin with, but it was BAD that day. We made some mixers on the 3rd hole and went from there. Then around the 10th hole, we just started taking pulls from the jug. We were the only ones on the course, so it's not like we were really effecting anyone else and we weren't falling over, puking drunk. Conditions were just terrible and no one was really playing well at all, so we just decided to let loose, play our best and have fun. That was the only time I've ever drank on the course. Otherwise I'm always serious about my round, but still have fun and don't beat myself too much over poor shots. Most of the time, especially in the summer I need tons of water to survive a round anyway, so I'm usually a water guy.

how extreme will putters get??
jrode replied to spyderwerks's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I'm not even sure why anyone would care what kind of putter designs they come out with. If you don't like the feel of it or think it's ugly, don't buy it. Simple as that. Some people like these crazy designs and some people don't care and will try anything that helps them putt better. It's all personal preference really. -
None of what he subtracted would amount anywhere near 80k-90k of that. Absolutely no way that travel fees, paying your caddy and whatever else he listed amount to anywhere near that and there's no way (unless you have exact numbers) that you'll ever get me to believe that.

$100,000 is a damn good income for A LOT of people in the country and like I said that's not even including sponsorships and the income of their wife if she works. Many people live a very good life off of $100,000.

I just got back into playing on a regular basis this summer. Otherwise it had been about oh, I'd say a three year layoff where I only played once or twice at most a summer. I can't really name any books or videos, but I have done quite a bit of reading and browsing online. I took lessons a long time ago, probably when I was 13 or 14. I'm 21 now.

Unfortunately, I think my video camera is outdated and there's no way I can get video onto the computer from it, so the best I could do would be to post a picture of my stance face on and from the back. Would any of you on here really be able to tell me much from that or should I not even bother? Up until today, I thought things were going well. I've had a slice as long as I can remember, but recently I thought I had it fixed as I was able to pound out about 6 or 7 out of 10 straight drives at the range and I was hitting my irons pretty good. Today on the course, I just collapsed. I only hit two, maybe three sliced drives that were really bad, but my main issue was just being able to get the ball in the air. I was topping tee shots, topping my irons, pushing my irons a bit and a few pulls and it was just an ugly day and by ugly, I mean just absolutely atrocious. I probably looked like I had never golfed for half of the round. I shot at 123 and up until today, I thought I was going in the right direction. Last time out I shot a 108 and thought I was on the path to being able to shoot in the 90's on a consistent basis, but I guess not. It probably doesn't help that my irons are probably too short for me. I've done the online measurements and entered them in on Ping's website for example and I need +0.5 - +1 I think. I know my this doesn't help, but I also know my struggles go well beyond my clubs.

If you could buy a new set of irons, what would you buy?

Callaway X-20's or MacGregor MT Irons. -
I played terrible golf today, even for me. I played 27 and shot a 123 on the first 18, which a 71.7/126 rating and then I shot a 60 on another nine. I played at The House on the Rock Resort course in Spring Green, WI if anyone else has been there. The Springs course, which is 18 holes is a Robert Trent Jones Sr. course and the other 9 hole course is an Andy North design. Pretty tough course, but just a terrible day for me. Before today I had been playing good golf (for me) and almost broke 100 last time out. Today it just got really ugly in a hurry. I started off alright but then I started pulling my head on everything and topping tee shots, topping irons. Not good at all.
-
Just got back from playing 27 today and not only did I play terrible overall, but most of my putting was atrocious. I'm using a blade right now and granted it's a crappy one, I putted pretty darn bad with it. Definitely think I'm going to grab the Sabertooth.
-
I'll go with Rocco.
-
I had tried the Sabertooth out a few weeks ago and really liked it. Well, today I had the chance to tryout the White Hot Tour #1 and I also really liked it. I putted just on one of those little things they have setup at Dick's, so it's not like it was on a real green, but they both felt good. Problem is, now I have no idea which to get and am going back and forth trying to decide. I can find both of them on eBay for relatively the same price or darn close to it. I just wanted to get a few opinions from people on here that have either used either of these putters or just want to give me an opinion. I'm torn!

whats the most you've paid for a putter??

Awesome! Thanks for that link. Now I just have to decide if I want the White Hot #1 or the Sabertooth. I can't make up my mind and it's driving me nuts. -
It's a tendency? How many people that fit the description you posted are doing the things you said? Throwing cigarette butts around, dropping beer cans everywhere and not fixing divot marks? Because I guarantee that the number of people you say won't matter. Do you know how many people in the world play golf? Your example of five people you've seen doing it doesn't make it a tendency. Also, I don't see a problem with smoking on the course if that's your thing, just make your cigar or cigarette finds it's proper resting place. Don't drop it in the middle of the course.

Such a stereotypical post I don't even know where to begin. I have longer hair. It's nothing like Charley Hoffman or that length, but I have a shaggier hairstyle. I wash it daily and I comb it in the mornings, it's well-kept. I also often go to the course with scruff on my face. I have a fairly decent/thick growth of facial hair and I don't shave daily. I'm sure not going to shave it quick when my buddy calls me at noon to go golfing. Sorry, deal with it. And guess what!? I repair all ball marks/divots when I make them, I don't smoke, so I don't throw cig butts anywhere and I don't drink beer on the course, just water and when I'm finished with my water, I recycle the bottle.
