  1. my divot is around 3/4 to an inch deep with my irons. I'll try the above suggested. I think I just need more practice.
  2. Switching from Big Bertha 08 irons to Mizuno MP 57's (more of a blade) I found my divot size went up signifigantly. My miss hits went from fat with the Game improvement Bertha's to thin with my Mizuno's. I have found that thin miss hits are much more likely to end up where I wanted vs fat which is always short of my target. This would be my #1 reason to rework a swing in favor of a divot. Also I dropped almost 20 strokes from my handicap this season going from shallow to larger divots.
  3. I have finally got a club to try and fill the gap in my set from the 5 iron to my driver (this is a pretty big gap). Some background: I can hit my 5iron tee'd up a consistent 200 yrds and from a decent fairway lie I get about 190 max. My driver is ranging from 250-290 consistently. I play a solid single digit handicap of 8.2 and my last 2 rounds were 73-73 this past sunday and monday (par 72). I play a very easy course measured at 69/113 (schenectady municipal golf course). I got a 19deg. Nickent 3DX utility 5f/w and I have tried other hybrids and woods 3-7 but nothing seems to be consistent. I just don't know what I'm supposed to do in my swing to get good results. Maybe someone can point me to an article explaining what is supposed to be going on during my swing. I play with people who are 20+ handicaps and hit their fairway woods/hybrids clean all the time why do I have so much trouble with this?
  4. I don't use any hybrids or fairway woods. I think I'll add a hybrid this fall when my wife lets me start spending money on golf equipment again. lol I hit my 5I off of shorter par 4's, and I have gotten very accurate with my driver since I don't have the option to hit a wood since my bag doesn't have any. I hit my irons solid enough that I can get away with driver > 5I > 9-PW for the longer par 5's.
  5. What I can't come to understand is how a pro can hit a PW 150-160 yards with a full swing. It never seems like they are over swinging when they hit yet they get so much more distance then the rest of us. I'm working hard to shoot sub 80 with consistent results and after getting a GPS I now have real data for my shots and what I thought was 275yds drives (based on course markers) are in reality 250 ish. If I unload my 6I I can get 175 max from the fairway. I just can't understand how a pro hits like they do. Maybe they have there clubs bent so yardage doesn't really mean anything that I can relate too.
  6. So I've played a few rounds lately with people who have had weights put into the grip of their irons/drivers. I have never heard of these before but the people using them were all very good players probably in the close to zero handicap range. Wondering if anyone has some info on these where to get them etc. and any feedback if you have them now.
  7. I was impressed with how soft the Mizuno Bettinardi BC1 putter was. The new BC lineup has the same face and feel so just find one that has the style you want. Also most of them can be had on ebay for around 125$.
  8. You should get a lesson and fix your golf swing, its probably all over the place out of plane and not in good tempo. Also the shaft is probably too stiff considering your score on a 9 hole round.
  9. Is there a difference between the old upro produced before callaway bought them out? Is the unit the same and are the courses the same? Are there any drawbacks to getting the original?
  10. sure looks to me like he improved his lie, he is clearly giving his clubhead a better chance at cleanly striking the ball. He is not just grounding his club he is matting down the grass behind the ball.
  11. I bought a set of Mizuno MP-57 irons a week ago and have since recorded my lowest 18 hole round 77, and my lowest 9 hole round 38 in the 4 rounds I've played with them so far. I went from a super game improvement iron to these and can't say how impressed I am with them. Also included with my irons I picked up a mizuno mp-R series 56 wedge and find it leaps and bounds better then my 56 vokey spin milled wedge I was using. I just feel like the mizuno's sole is easier to work with. Also it is a little heavier then the Vokey which kinda gets knocked around in deeper rough.
  12. Wow over 600 yards I can't imagine standing on that tee box
  13. I like to go to 1/2 swing when I can't get good contact going. Hit about 20-30 at the range 1/2 swing then another 20-30 3/4 swing. Then when I feel confident I move into the full swing.
  14. I agree with the 50 yds and in for bump and run. Unless I have to hit under trees and the shot requires a bump and run (usually with some praying in there too) I try not to hit it over 50.
  15. I have a set that is going up on ebay this sunday, the 08 Callaway Big Bertha irons. These are incredibly forgiving and really help promote a high ball flight (was the hardest part for me as a beginner). I got them mid last summer with a handicap around 25 or so and now have a 10. I just purchased a set of mizuno's and so the Callaways are going. I suggest you consider used clubs as there are great deals out there to be found. Ping me if your interested I'd be happy to sell em 275 shipped I can email you pics and more info. Standard grips, length, loft, lie. Regular flex shafts.
  16. I would love to try it out. I am just getting really active with my golfing and play several rounds a week. handicap is dropping and hopefully this trend will continue. Also I'm a programmer and good at breaking things that are supposed to work.
  17. I want to know if I can have my iron shafts cut down 1/2 an inch. They are project X rifle 5.0's with mizuno mp 57's. I am thinking of buying these now but they are used and are 1/2 inch longer custom ordered that way.
  18. I picked up the Callaway 08 irons from a coworker last summer. I have recently developed a draw with my driver and irons this season. When I first got the irons last season I hit them strait most of the time. Now I either draw them or hook them. I can't get them consistent and they are holding back the rest of my game. Does anyone have any tips for me? I was thinking of getting a different set of irons with more feedback, I posted before about this and was told a good player can shoot a good round regardless of the equipment (within reason). Would having a club without a major offset allow me to play the ball with a fade? or at least better control trajectory? Was thinking I could ebay my irons and pick up some mizuno mp57's for a relatively small out of pocket price.
  19. Figure I post an update since I bought this book in the fall of last year '08. I have since read through it 2x and seen nice progress. I think even as a feel player you can gain great insight into the mechanics of good short game swings. I myself don't have the time or drive to spend hours measuring my chips/pitches etc in from 100yds to really get good. I still take his approach but with 1 wedge right now. I measured out my SW from his 3 points and use it as reference. I also have learned to look for course conditions and take them into account which I never did before. My favorite mechanical aspect of of the "short game swing" is where he says to always accelerate through impact. This has helped me the most of any tip in my golf game and I try to carry it over into putting too and not stab at putts but swing through them. Also my game has gotten allot better, went from carding low to mid 90's at the end of the summer to carding my first sub 80 round this past weekend (a 78).
  20. I made an adjustment to my driver swing and after keeping a detailed scorecard of results from my last 3 rounds I am avg'ing 280 off the tee, with good ones just under the 300 mark and poor ones (usually too much hook rather then a nice draw) at 250. The rest of my game is behind my driving skill right now since my change in stance and setup for the driver doesn't carry over directly into my iron shots.
  21. These responses are what I was looking for, I'll keep the irons for at least another season and maybe if my game gets me where I want I can look at a new set in the future. Now to find some hybrids to fill my gap from 175-210.
  22. So my game has grown in leaps and bounds from the start of last summer. I played a lot of golf as a teenager and pretty much stopped altogether when I went to college (no money/time). I started back up hitting my original knock off irons and found myself in the high 90's range. I picked up a modern driver and started golfing about 2 rounds a week and my score started going down. I picked up a set of Callaway Big Bertha 08 irons 6-PW + 50deg A-wedge. My score has since settled around mid to high 80's. I'm playing 3-5 rounds of golf a week now that the local courses have opened up. My question is am I limiting or hurting my game playing with a "Game Improvement" iron set? My goal is to push myself to a single digit handicap by seasons end. What irons would you suggest if you were in my shoes? Money is an issue right now so I can't go drop 1k on a brand new set.
  23. I would classify sports into different categories, obviously most sports require some of each of these three attributes but in order to classify difficulty I think you should look at whichever sport requires all three evenly (and in all positions) to perform at a world class level. endurance: cycling, swimming, running etc physical: football, wrestling, sumo, hockey skill/reaction timing: nascar, ping pong, autocross So what sport do you think requires the most of each of these three qualities?
  24. So I'm looking at a group golf trip in late march with 3 rounds in Williamsburg VA at: Williamsburg national golf club both courses Yorktown and Jamestown and Fords Colony - Blackheath What do you guys think of these courses. Has anyone played them?
  25. I have a 15deg hybrid in my bag right now that was free (and since I only have 11 clubs I keep it for the occasional punch shot). I have issues hitting it clean from the fairway, I feel the loft is so low that I can't get it in a nice trajectory getting the max distance and a controllable landing. I think dumping the woods wouldn't be a bad idea and I plan to fill in my bag with hybrids in place of long woods/irons too. Maybe try a few different lofts of hybrid clubs I bet you will get the 200-220 range out of an 18deg hybrid when well struck.
