  1. If I find myself hitting a fade/slice during a round, a quick fix for me is to close the clubface at address a little. I keep closing it a little more each time until I am hitting it straight. I also try not to change my basic swing path when I am doing this. Too much different stuff going on will usually result in big smothered pull hooks. Not a pretty sight. Hope it works for you.
  2. My club just added GPS to all our carts and in just a few short weeks, I have found myself starting to rely on it for club selection. I do not like that. I prefer to play without it because I can see whenever I go to a course without it, I will have created a problem for myself. Does anyone else have this problem? Several of the guys at my club have bought handheld rangefinders so when they go elsewhere, it is portable.
  3. I am one of the few people I know who went from a stiff to regular flex driver. I played on old Titleist 975D driver with ProForce 75 stiff tip shaft. That was fine for me before. I swung hard enough to load it and was getting good yardage and decent accuracy. I had some health issues that made me question whether or not I really wanted to swing that hard anymore. I made the switch to a Taylormade R580 with the Taylormade regular flex shaft. It took me about a couple of weeks to learn the right swing speed to properly load the shaft, but once I did, I gained about 25 yards and narrowed my misses by half. It was a good move for me.
  4. I also have the SP-5's and they are very comfortable. I also have 2 pairs of Adidas and they are comfortable and waterproof. I really like the looks of the new Ecco's and a friend who wears them thinks they are great.
  5. Off topic, but I cannot resist. During a round a couple of years ago, one of the guys in my group hit a wormburner straight down the middle of the fairway and directly into the side of the head of a poor, unsuspecting squirrel. The squirrel fell over on its side and we all were having trouble containing ourselves and teasing him about killing this innocent squirrel. We began walking toward the squirrel and about halfway there, he sat up, shook himself all over and turned to see us advancing on him. Obviously disoriented and woozy, the squirrel started running for the shelter of the nearest trees. Every few steps, he would tumble over onto his side, right himself and keep moving like a drunk on a carousel. The closer he got to the tree the more he recovered. By the time we reached him, he was slowly climbing up the side of the tree. Of course, the Squirrel Man took a major amount of kidding for months. It also seemed someone told the story around the clubhouse (I don't have any idea who) and he became infamous. It lasted long after he still found it humorous.
  6. About as close as I come is jumping to conclusions. Of course, I play almost every day and I walk most of the time. I suppose that would constitute exercise. I lived in a place with a full fitness center and never darkened the door of it in two years.
  7. Thank you, Ragontona!! I am going to try that out the next time I feel my tempo slipping. I think that is the one thing that has kept me from being more consistent. I believe that what you called "not much of a drill" could just answer my problem. The sensation of not finishing the backswing is just what I experience.
  8. I played terrible yesterday, great today, and tomorrow is anybody's guess. When asked what I "normally" shoot, I always tell people that it depends entirely on which of my games shows up. I believe it all boils down to tempo. When I am playing well, my swing is smooth as silk and never rushed from the top. The problem is on the days I play poorly, I can feel that something is "off", but jsut can't seem to correct it. My tempo is wrong and I start pressing and the next thing you know, I am trying to chip out of the woods to save double. Does anyone have any good drills I can use to establish a good tempo on the range before I go to the first tee? Sometimes, I have the time to hit a whole bucket, but other times, I might get to hit 10 or 15 balls. I need help. I think conquering this one problem might just take those last few strokes off to get me from a 9 to a 4 or 5. When my tempo is off, it is always faster not slower. Help!
  9. Didn't Linda Blair's head swivel in "The Exorcist"? Didn't look like that would work well in a golf swing...
  10. That's why the question mark at the end of the statement, I couldn't remember which tournament, I just remembered the incredible shot.
  11. From what I have seen over the past 10 years, when Tiger is at his best.... .... No One can give him a run for his money. At his best, he wins the Open by, what?, 15 strokes???
  12. This reply is for everyone who already replied. This is really entertaining. I am enjoying watching the fight from the ringside seats.. I have to fall on the side of Tiger being 2x better than Phil. I would go so far as to say the PGA Tour should consider letting #'s 2, 3, 4, and 5 scramble against Tiger the rest of the season...
  13. I don't think he was advocating murder, just making a comparison of how people felt.. Although, growing up in the rural south, a valid defense was always, "He needed killin'".
  14. Erik is right. There are several causes for an open club face. One is a too weak grip. Have someone check your grip (or consult any golf magazine). The second is ball position (too far forward usually) I normally lay down a couple of clubs in a practice station to check my ball position. This is also a good way to check your stance to see if you are too open as that will also cause a slice. The third is swing path. If you "cast" the club so that it is coming into the ball from outside the line, the tendency is to use your hands to try and hold the clubface square to the target line. I would suggest putting a couple of tees in the ground in front and behind the ball about 3 inches along the correct swing path and trying to insure the club crosses them both when you swing. That's the best I've got to offer.
  15. One of my playing companions just started playing about 18 months ago. He has really improved over the past year. He is now consistently breaking 100 and has been close to breaking 90 a couple of times. One thing I admire about him is that he never gives up. He also counts every stroke because, as he said, I want to know if I am improving.
  16. When my putting goes bad, it is normally speed, speed, speed. I go to the putting green and start with 30+ footers. My only goal is to leave them inside 2 ft so I can make 95+% of the second putts. Once I get them to stay in that circle, I move in to 25ft, 20ft, 15ft, etc. Once I get my speed back on track, my 3 putt problems are gone.. That's where I would start if I were getting 40 plus putts per round.
  17. I agree... I just love to watch him play the game.
  18. During a practice round once, Ben Hogan was in the fairway about 150 out when someone asked him what club he would play for this shot. Mr. Hogan emtied his clubs on the ground and played the shot with each one of them. Still, when I say "shotmaking", I mean absolute control of his golf ball. He can choose from a myriad of shots and make the ball do as he wishes better than anyone else I have ever seen. And, yes, he does have the courage to hit those incredible shots in the heat of battle with the whole enchilada on the line. (Remember the 217 out of the bunker over the lake at the PGA against Bob May?) I am not sure I would have had the courage to try that shot with nothing but my potential embarrassment on the line, much less almost a million bucks.
  19. I agree on the 1 to 2 strokes. I also believe it is primarily by keeping the player from making a big mental error and playing the wrong shot for the situation. I don't believe the yardages, etc is as important as keeping the player's head in the right place.
  20. It is not the length Tiger has that amazes me as much as it is the phenomenal shotmaking. I have seen most pro golfers make some really amazing shots, but never so many, so often, so well. A few years ago, one of the Golf Magazines asked 30 of the top PGA players to describe the best shot they saw the previous year. Out of the 30, only a few pick a shot other than one of Tiger's. And what was so unexpected was that very few of them picked the same shot. I remember watching a tournament on TV a few years back where Tiger hit a 3 iron downhill 264 that faded into a pin tucked back right on a green and leaving it within 10 ft. I actually stood up with my jaw dropping and said something to the effect, "That is just NOT f****** possible." There was no one in the room but me, but the effect was just so electric, I actually spoke it outloud.
  21. You guys make me thankful I live where I do. Theft is not a problem here. At least not on the golf courses I play. I don't recall in the 6 years I have played ever even hearing about stolen clubs. I would support legislation to make club theft the same as horse theft.... hanging. I think anyone who would steal golf gear or flyfishing equipment is a scumbag beyond salvation and they should be wiped off the face of the earth. Of course, I had a Dad that thought theft was the lowest of the low. He told me once that you could commit murder and when you got out of prison, you could probably find a job, but if you were caught stealing, no one ever trusted you again. I took it to heart.
  22. Well, perhaps I don't know the rules as well as I should either. I thought they changed the rules where you could remove loose impediments in bunkers just like you can through the green? If the moss was a loose impediment, why couldn't she just remove it? Also, I, like Michelle, thought that grounding your club in a hazard did not include your backswing. Once you have started the club back, you are in the process of swinging, aren't you? The other part of this is that they are using cameras to call penalties so that every person with a telephone and a TV is a rules official. I don't like this regardless of who it is called on. I don't like the instant replay deal in golf..
  23. Does your slice start straight and then tail left, or does it start right and banana to the left?
  24. The only trigger I have noticed is in my driver swing. If I really have to bear down and concentrate, I will shift my weight to my back foot just the barest amount and turn my back foot out about 5 degrees more than normal, then start my swing. On irons and wedges, I just try to get still and keep the shot visualized in my head. Nothing happens special except the club just starts back.

Never a moral dilemma for me... I just enjoy the show. Also, Natalie G, Lorena, Christy K.... However, Laura Davies should be required to play in a Hazmat suit....
