  1. Check out the book Zen Golf. The philosophies described in this book have helped me with the "mental approach" to golf.
  2. Don't know where to buy gear, but SCUBA in college was a great time. I even went on a IU sponsored dive trip to the Florida Keys. I'm now open water certified, Scientific Certified, Nitrox Certified, and Advanced Certified. You will enjoy yourself. You could probably find some pretty good gear cheap on ebay. Just buy a new snorkel.
  3. I was going to say the same thing... It is an average of your best 10 scores out of your past 20 rounds. I would like to add that you don't get 5 strokes on the 5 most difficult holes. The holes that are handicapped lower on any particular golf course aren't necessarily the hardest holes. They are the holes that have the biggest score discrepancy between a good golfer and a bad golfer. That is to say that if you are playing a hard hole that even the pros can't score well on, then it won't necessarily be the number 1 handicap hole. The number one handicap hole is based on which holes the better handicapped players score better on than the lesser players. It is kind of confusing, but I think that is the way it works.
  4. I wouldn't be at all surprised if you can enter your score at Golf Galaxy or some free program on the internet. Since you want a legit handicap make sure that you are counting all your strokes, not taking mulligans, etc. If you don't have a legit handicap you will only be cheating yourself in tournaments and money games with your friends.
  5. I have a full ladies starter set that I'd like to sell. They are my wifes first set. It is called a Callaway GES (Game Enjoyment System). The set comes with a bag, putter, and the rest of the clubs that she would need. My wife has used them for a couple years and did enjoy using these sticks as a beginner. Last summer she bought a set of irons and a new driver. After we sell the GES she is looking forward to fulling outfitting the rest of her set. You can find more info about the GES on ebay or through google. Let me know if you are interested. Price is negotiable.
  6. if you really want to get better, go get lessons. It looks like you aren't opening the club face and are swinging with just your arms. Torque is created by the twist in your torso, not necessarily how high you take the club. You need more extension of your hands away from your body, you are chicken winging it. Make sure your back is pointed at the target and then just turn your torso and have your sternum pointing towards the target. Don't worry about taking the club really high. Just take it back and hinge your wrists. When you turn your torso back towards the target everything will come together. I'm guessing you are probably missing some basics too. What does your grip look like? How about ball position with the 6 iron?
  7. the only wedge that I would ever recommend is a titleist vokey spin milled wedge. Is there such a thing as a more perfect wedge?
  8. I have several, but I'm not sure which is the worst. When I was much younger I accidentally hit into a group of ladies. One lady was kind enough to bring my tee shot back to me along with a lecture. I didn't care for lectures in my teenage years so I was kind enough to say some not so nice things to her. Turns out she was on the board and I got kicked off the course for a couple years. A few years later she was found to be embezzling money from the club. She killed herself so that she wouldn't face criminal penalties or whatever social impacts there might have been. Warp 10 years... I'm playing at this goat ranch par 3. On a hole that runs beside this road I hit my 170 yard tee shot. Unfortunately I hooked it. As the ball crested over the top of an enormous tee. I see this old school eagle talon driving the road. The ball landed directly on top of the hood of the car and left a pretty big dent. That was the first eagle I ever got. 2 years ago I was playing at a pretty nice course. They have a green that runs right by a fairly busy rural highway. I hooked my drive and ended up behind a tree at what I thought was about 150 yards. So I took my 7 iron out of the bag and hit what I thought was a perfect shot. Although I couldn't see the green I could hear a slight "tink" when the ball came down. My buddy who was standing in the fairway immediately starts laughing uncontrollably. I ask him " what happened, did it hit the pin?" He looks at me and says "no dude. it hit a motorcycle and went bouncing down the road." Shortly after that the roar of a harley was heard coming towards us. The biker dude got off his steed and started limping around as his road ***** looked around for the golf ball. I quickly apologized and asked if I hit the bike. He said "no you mother****er. You hit me in the knee." He left shortly after that to "go home". On our way home we saw his bike at the local biker bar.
  9. golf is about what you wear?
  10. I'm playing Chambers Bay in May. I can't freaking wait.
  11. I haven't tried this, but it seems that you would hit a lot of hooks if you left your club face that closed.
  12. I'm thinking if you are truly a 36 handicapper the best thing you can do for your golf game is get lessons. I started last year as a 21 and finished as a 9.4. I took 4 lessons and practiced a lot. It isn't the arrows, it is the indian.
  13. As a beginner I started out swinging Nike clubs but I don't remember the model. After a year I switched to slingshot OSS irons. I know they look kind of goofy and I haven't really played any other clubs, but my handicap went from 21.x last year to 9.4. I think the lessons improved my game more than anything, but the irons are very confidence inspiring. I will probably try to switch to some form of a combo set later this year after I dial my game in a little further, but I have no plans of ever selling the slingshots. They are just too easy to hit.
