THIS puts people over the edge? I lost my respect for the man after his 14th wife and loss of all money gambling. This 88 doesn't do anything nor should it. Take away all the antics and there are several tour players who have had blow up rounds/periods. If you have never lost your swing, you cannot possible understand how bad it can get. I have been working for 2 years to get my swing back and its been a huge fight and I don't have my life riding on it. Major body changes can significantly impact the golf swing and John Daly likely generates more clubhead speed than anyone on tour. His misses could be extremely violent, like 80-100 yards offline. You would never believe it possible until its happened to you.

Generally avoiding clubs will not lead to long term improvement or happiness for me. That being said, I am teetering on permanently bagging my driver. The driver is the only club that really requires a different swing. If you can dial in your 7-iron you should be able to take that swing all the way through 3-wood.

I have a hard time with Kenny Perry's swing, but in general I can watch anyone.

Fairway wood, Tee box Vs. Fairway
saltman replied to cirem22's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
have you tried hitting the 3 wood off the deck on the tee? Sometimes, I swing too much through the ball with the shallower face and will catch the ball a little thin with my 3W off the tee. If the grass is a bit shaggy or I can us an old divot on the tee I may just hit it off the deck as if it is the fairway. I think it encourages me to hit down on the ball versus through the ball like I would a driver. -
Dude, being frustrated with your own performance is hardly a lack of sportsmanship. Play a little tournament golf before you write this drivel. Tiger's behavior is FAR from abnormal. Explain to me how any of the things you mentioned show disrespect to your opponent.

bahh....I enjoyed the hell out my college years. Golf was but a distant memory....no need to feel bad for me. I just figure the game will eventually give me some back. I had a few other similar moments, but that one easily takes the cake. I think the only thing that bothered me was the coach didn't even look at my card. I had also beaten at least half the scholarship players on the team in summer tournaments, but thems the breaks.

college golf team open tryouts sophomore year, 1996. Brutal brutal fall day, winds gusting up to 30 MPH. I was battling like crazy and we had heard from years past that only players that shot 80 or better are invted to continue playing. I am 7 over through 17 and need to make par on the 400 yard par 4 18th which is playing straight into the wind. I rip a drive on the exact line I want and it clips a tiny overhanging limb on the left side of the fairway and kicks straight left and down a slope into a grove of trees. I try to punch out and nail a tree, the ball kicks left and sits up against the OB fence, unplayable, and still in jail. The exact same thing happens again and from there I can't remember how the rest of the hole went, but I took an 11 to shoot 86. I didn't play another round of golf for 5 years afterwards and until last year had played just 10 rounds in 10 years.

Zero 4 putts, 6 3-putts (4 on first day) Par 3's (there are 5 par 3's on this course) 1 birdie 4 pars 3 bogeys 4 doubles 1 triple 2 quads (same hole) +21 for the weekend Par 5's (there are 3 par 5's) 0 birdies 7 pars 0 bogeys 2 doubles 0 triples 0 quads +4 for the weekend Par 4's (obviously 10 of them) 0 birdies 15 pars 8 bogeys 4 doubles 0 triples 2 quadruples +24 for the weekend That's pretty interesting, I never would have guessed this. The par 3's are definitely the most difficult holes on the course.

Agree about the 100 yards in, but putts are a bit misleading. Putts per day 35/34/28. The last day I did miss a couple 2 footers but made everything else within 10 feet and lipped out a couple bombs. First day, would be considered a poor putting day for sure. No doubt about wedge play, it was very very bad. Also in case anyone is wondering 84-89-86

Watson has kept himself in great physical shape (much like Norman) and still hits the ball very pure. His putter has been giving him fits for decades. I absolutely would NOT be surprised to see him stick around the leaderboard over the weekend.

yeah, you would think that but my first quad came on a par 3. Tee shot short right and shortsided myself, chunked a chip into the bunker, bladed the bunker shot 30 yards over the green, chipped back up and 3 putted. Another very similar quad on a par 4. I shanked a ball into fescue from 150 on par 4 and lost it and 3 putted for another. Some of it undoubtedly nerves, but not really any were from stupidity.

Exactly! The only trend I can think of was poor wedge play from around 100 yards. What doesn't show up is all the birdie chances I squandered from less than 100 yards. I made double+ from less than 100 yards at least 5times that I can recall. I also made quadruple twice by blading bunker shots WAY over the green, but on the other hand I had 3 brilliant sand saves. This is exactly what I have had issues with all year, consistency. Like another poster mentioned, you would think that I was trying to do too much to save pars, but in reality that isn't the case. The quads just kind of happened as if I forgot how to play momentarily, not from trying to do too much. I never lost my temper either. It was a strange strange weekend.

54 hole tournament last weekend Scoring summary below: 0 eagles 1 birdie 26 pars 10 bogeys 12 doubles 1 triple 4 quadruples What the hell? 50% of the holes played in 1-under and 50% in 50 over! Not sure what you can say, but I thought it was interesting. I didn't think I played as poorly as my score and I think this says it all.

From a golf perspective, Happy Gilmore is terrible from a comedy perspective its great. Follow the Sun, another great call. DSP is older (1980s) and was a B movie, so I doubt its even available on DVD, but if you like Tin Cup, you'll love DSP. Randy Quaid was the lead and if memory serves he is a pretty formidable player. The thing I hated about Tin Cup was Costner's swing was brutal as was Matt Damon's in Bagger Vance. Whomever played Bobby Jones in Bagger Vance however had a fantastic swing.

8-10 handicap with zero driving consistency
saltman replied to onthebeach's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
You can put me in this party as well. I have determined it is pure mental as I can go to the driving range and just rope drives and cannot take it to the course at all. I don't recall ever being scared of the driver when I was younger, today its frightening. The ball can go absolutely anywhere, but the shot that scares me the most is the violent pull hook. Unfortunately, the fear of that shot usually results in an equally violent push slice. I can literally hit my driver 100 yards off line in either direction and still get about 260+ yards on it. When I hit my driver like I should, its 295-310. Very very frustrating to know that I do so many things properly to generate that type of club head speed, but people don't understand how extraordinarily awful misses can be with that much club head speed.....until they see them. It can be incredibly embarassing. -
This is why Dead Solid Perfect is so good, fantastic gratuitous nudity and no Russo or Costner and virtually the same story.

I just recalled that my senior year in HS I four-putted for bogey from 15 feet on the 15th hole and would up losing the tournament by one stroke. Oh the agony.

We have the same index, my stats.... Fairways: 30/126 23.8% (1-6) GIR: 52/162 32.1% (3-8) Putts: 33.6 (29-37) Score: 87.4 (77-97) I would say we are pretty close, my number 1 problem is keeping the ball in play, especially with the driver. Your biggest issue is iron play, but you are probably having to hit longer irons into the greens. I probably benefit from being longer, 210 yards is more like 4/5-iron distance for me. I have zero confidence off the tee with anything more than a 5-iron and as all know golf is a game of confidence. All in all, we don't seem to be too much different in terms of pure statistics.

I have 3 of them this year and zero eagles.

A guy I was playing with today told me it was illegal to brush and he actually said you CAN tap or pick up, but not brush. I said I thought he was wrong, but didn't feel like getting into it.
-
As far as I can tell there is no rule against brushing loose impediments on the putting surface correct? You cannot tap them, but you can brush with your hand or putter or hat or whatever. Is this correct?

Setup change = Much improved ball striking
saltman replied to Walther's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Agreed, hands to close to the body and the grip is crazy strong, what are you compensating for? -
This is very much my game. Its really about turning those triples into bogeys and the best way I have been able to do that is to play smarter. Taking triple out of play off the tee has been key for me.
