  1. Since I got my 50 inch plasma HDTV and when the broadcasts are in full resolution HD, it all looks so good that I don't mind so much who is playing well and who is not. The Masters was gorgeous. There are so many good players that the NFL term of "any given Sunday" probably applies to the PGA tournaments as well.
  2. My three (metal) wood is one of the old Adams Tight Lies "Air Assault" with a narrow face height. It works very well for the rather low cut baked fairways I encounter in the Houston area, as it almost feels like a hybid. However, with the short face, I do not have confidence hitting the Tight Lies 3 from the tee box. Besides I just bought a new driver....
  3. 2009 Goals: 1.Buy a quality driver. This is done (with my new Pinemeadow BK)! Up until now I have never paid over $40 for a driver, and this was $120. 2.Re-grip my clubs and with oversized grips. This is done! I had not re-gripped my clubs in several years. 3.Learn to hit good shots with the new grips & driver. In progress. 4.Shoot at least three rounds below my lifetime best of 85. My norm has been 92-94 5.At least one birdie per month. 6.Continue teaching my three grandsons to play golf; we have done one round this year so far.
  4. Presumably a rake (if found in the bunker and in your way) is a 'movable obstruction'?
  5. Normally I shoot +22 to +24; today I shot +16, best day in a while. Learning my way through new and oversized grips (to accommodate arthritic hands) plus a totally new driver. The new driver is from PineMeadow Golf and is their BK Command 10.5 degree; it is similar to a TaylorMade R7 CGB. I am finding I tend to pull shots with this driver so that is what I am working on. A nice day overall here in Houston.
  6. I have been using a reverse overlap grip for all shots for a long time. I am a righty. My main problem is arthritis and enlarged knuckles of my hands, and the reverse overlap (left index nuzzling between third and fourth right fingers) feels the least strain on the hands. The two hands feel compact and unified. I should also say that I use a glove on both hands; having a glove on the right hand minimizes the shock transmitted from the club. And I have graphite shafts with all clubs except the putter. I have to cater to the hands to get through 18 holes. That may all sound rather dreary, but I enjoy the game very much.
  7. I have arthritis in my hands and it limits the total number of full swings I can make before the hands get really sore (sort of like a baseball pitcher's 'pitch count'). So I tend not to make many full swings before the round. I do some short chips and some putts beforehand and that helps. I have recently gotten larger grips on my clubs and am eager to see how they will help my 'swing count'.
  8. I try to buy my stuff from my home course pro shop when I can. It builds good will and they often will knock something off the tag price for a regular player that they know.

This is so cool to hear, about your grandpa. The greatest golfing pleasure I have these days is teaching my three grandsons to play. Started about three years ago; they are now 16, 14, and 11. I gave each of them their own set of clubs in 2007 so they would learn to take care of them. We get out once every month or so, as their busy teenage schedule permits. A lot of life-lessons can be learned on a golf course; plus it is fun! My own schedule is not crowded, as I just turned 72. I was quite surprised to see that the 'over 60' category on this site is less than 2%.
  10. My current irons are about 15 years old; do not remember what I had before then. Just had them regripped with oversize grips for my hand arthritis and I am now having to get used to the new grips. I think that it is not the club, it is the clubber.... Wilson ProStaff Oversize Shafts: Wilson Reflex Super Light Graphite; Low Torque, Standard Flex, Mid Kickpoint Grips: Winn Master Wrap (Winn Excel RF Oversize +1/8” Weather Black)
  11. When I can, I prefer to buy golf stuff from my home course pro shop. It builds good will and they usually knock off something from the tag price. Just today I bought a Bridgestone P9700 Cart Bag. It feels like good quality and has 14 individual club slots that each run to the bottom of the bag. I just got new and oversized grips on my clubs and want to preserve the grip from the beginning. It also has ample pockets, lift handles, etc. You can google for it to have a closer look; it looks classy: black with gold trim.
  12. I love the range: no trees, no water, no sand traps, no doglegs, no slopes....
  13. I play strictly used balls so there is a mixture of brands and logos. So I mark a rather large X with a sharpie; one diagonal red and the other blue. Quite unique and fairly easy to see in the fairway. I would post a photo, but cannot do attachments yet.
