  1. I didn't mark my last dozen because my girlfriend took my Sharpie.
  2. Dude, that's a sick score for 9 holes with only 3 clubs. I wish I had time to do the same, but I have a hard enough time out there with 14 clubs haha.
  3. Last time I played, I hit almost every putt short. When I go out tomorrow, I'm going to think to myself "aim for the back of the cup." In basketball, shooters always aim for the back of the rim, so I figure maybe using the same mentality will help my putting. Does anyone else do this? Are there other things you guy think about when swinging the putter?
  4. Got a 34 dollar special at Forest Park in Queens.
  5. I'm taking off work the afternoon tomorrow to play 18 holes. Who's with me?
  6. Focus. Playing with other people keeps you focused and honest.
  7. Not to jinx you, but sometimes the first round (and often the first hole) is the best. Just have fun out there.
  8. Good luck to you. I'd love to get in 54 holes of golf myself.
  9. I play G5 irons (supposedly "game improvement") and E6 balls (to limit sidespin), which would ostensibly mean I can only hit balls straight. Yet I find that is not the case at all. I play a draw or a fade, or hit low/high, whenever I need to get around a tree or the contour of the course requires it. I've hit some really nice shots like this, but most of the time I put too much or too little movement on it. I guess next I need to learn how to put different amounts of draw/fade on it, rather than all or nothing. Would also love to learn how to hit perfectly straight
  10. The temperature barely cracked 40 today, and it sure was cold. I did alternate balls on every hole, and my distance didn't really seem to be affected by the cold.
  11. 90 was tough to break. Still is most of the time. One of these days I'll break 80... maybe.
  12. I wish I could spend 20 minutes at the range but that's not possible at the public courses. I'm going to start out taking a whole extra club each shot and see how that goes. Other than that, I'm going to take advice from real "athletes": wear a standard winter jacket whenever I'm not actually swinging. 40 degrees is really lovely weather if you're in a parka, hat, and gloves. I'll also definitely be walking, so that will keep me warm from hole to hole. Let's get out there already!!
  13. I would rate how I play on the following scale (from worst to best): 1. Alone (I usually play 2 balls) 2. With randoms that are worse than me 3. With friends (usually about equal or slightly less skilled than me) 4. With randoms that are better than me So, as the skill level of those I am playing with increases, so does my own game. I imagine it's all about focus. Usually people better than me are very focused, and it's very easy to stay on track while trying to match their shots.
  14. Tomorrow's going to be in the low 40's, but I've decided the golf season has started so the chill isn't going to keep me off the course. When I played in November it was in the low 50s, and I noticed my ball traveled significantly shorter distances. I'm not going to have time to go to the range and figure out how far I'm hitting each club. Is there a guideline for this? For example, if I normally hit my 5 iron 200 yards, would it go 190 in 50 degree weather and 180 in 40 degree weather?
  15. I planned on getting winter boots, but unfortunately I didn't get to the store before all this snow. So, I've been using my old golf shoes as snow shoes. They are quite effective - waterproof and good traction. I wonder if they'd be better for everyday use if I took off the plastic spikes, or if this would render them useless.
  16. I can tell immediately if it's going to slice right into the trees. Man I hate that feeling.
  17. No votes for Callaway? I wasn't a fan of their X-18 irons, but I love their woods, their wedges are pretty good, and of course they make Odyssey putters
  18. I like to make a day of it. Sleep in a little bit, get in about 45 minutes of practice and tee off about 11 am. Have some lunch at the turn, finish up strong, and get home by dinner!
  19. Awesome - There are tickets for $59 dollars each way in January from NY to Ft. Lauderdale. And I'm sure my grandmother will gladly put me up for a few nights
  20. Thanks I'll check out Spirit Air. The Texas thing might not work out anyway.
  21. For those seeking distance, try Tour Tempo. With Tour Tempo, you will be swinging faster, and thus the ball will go farther. You can see this forum's discussion here. http://www.thesandtrap.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20607
  22. Haha - well done.
  23. As usual, the collective knowledge of this forum is amazing. I was planning on going to Dallas (my girlfriend has friends there that she wants to visit), but I might have to reconsider. The weather recently hasn't been good, and there seems to be a decent chance it won't be good in January. Then again, 45-50 degrees isn't terrible as long as it's sunny.
  24. I haven't played in a month and I'm dreading the 4 months before it gets warm enough in NY to play again. I priced out a 2 day, 3 night trip to Texas in January: $230 airfare $200 for 3 nights in a hotel $100 car rental $70 travel case for my clubs (I had wanted one of these anyway) $100 for 2 greens fees Is $700 too much to spend for 2 days of golf? Is there any way I can do this cheaper? This wouldn't replace my spring/summer trip I usually do with my friends, but that trip is about 50/50 golf/vacation with friends, whereas this is 100% golf.
  25. I don't have much of a problem when I wear glasses at the range, except when I get sweaty and have to wipe them off every so often. Also, occasionally during a swing my head moves to the point where I just lose the ball out of the side of the glasses. This is very distracting, but I'm pretty sure this means I'm overswinging, since it doesn't happen always. But when I go the course, I always wear contacts. It's one less thing to be distracted by when you're on the course. It's also uncomfortable for me to wear glasses and a hat, and I always have a hat.
