I get this problem from time to time. Make the club is fairly open at impact. The stock S&T; shot is a draw anyways, so just make sure the ball is starting to the right of the target.
-
Today's vids. Still got the head bob, and some flip, but I think it's an improvement. What do you guys think?
-
I think I'd get the lessons, for sure. Or at the least post a video here. And remember, the Golf Evolution academy has the Evolvr concept which is worth checking out. I'm with iacas... if you get your approach shots close to the pin, short game is minimized in importance.
-
Get your hands what Iacas calls "deeper" in the takeaway (i.e. butt of club is more in than clubhead). That should help fix the push.
-
Parallel to the ground is what I mean.
-
Fixed the takeaway. Broke 100 for the first time today because of it! No fat shots at all. With P2 correct, swinging the club got 1000000 times easier. Not I just have to work on getting rid of the bad swing plane compensations, but I think I am going to be rapidly improving. I'll post a video of the improved swing soon.
-
The yardage distances will be greater when you start hitting the ball better. I would make sure to incorporate bringing the club back to parallel, and stopping and making sure the butt end of the club is not crossing over your target line (i.e. pointing right), and swinging from that point until you reach club parallel to the ground on the other side. That drill is great for building a solid swing; if the club is in a good position at parallel to the ground in your backswing, things get a lot more repeatable and you will gain a lot of power.
-
I think I may have found the answer. The bobbing is a way to try to play catch up with the swing. I think my P2 is awful, and is the root cause of all of this. Take a look: The grip is pointing way right of the target line. I believe this puts my arms way behind where they should be. I either hit fat from this, pull up and flip it, or hit it thin. I think if my P2 position was correct, my swing might become enormously better and more consistent. What do you guys think?

I don't really know what I'm doing.

You can watch the vids in slow mo here: http://www.swingacademy.com/videoPlayer.aspx?id=6834

I've recorded more recent swing videos. There is a ball, you just can't see it. I didn't have a great round as far as solid hits goes today. Any suggestions? (Especially on take-away, starting the downswing).
-
It just seems ridiculous. Teach a beginner this way but "advanced players" learn another move. What does that leave for people like me who have only been in the game and trying to improve? He should be talking about keeping the body from moving on the backswing, take away, etc. Casting?
-
So this guy thinks that beginners should cast from the top to start the swing. Huh? I think he totally misunderstands the ball flight laws too, as he advocates casting to stop a slice? Anyways, start watching at 1:40 or so if you want... http://www.5min.com/Video/How-to-Cas...Club-151780375

Head moving in front of ball in backswing
kilbyman replied to kilbyman's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I'm realizing now that a root flaw I have in my swing is moving my head (and upper body) in front of the golf ball to start the downswing, instead of my hips. I'm learning through my practice that if I keep my head still, my upper body stays still, and what I'm working on in my lessons (get the hips past the ball before my hands) happens naturally. Golf's biggest secret may be to slide the hips, but until you keep your head from moving drastically forward, a good hip slide is impossible. -
With regards to the posted drill, will getting the op's (and mine too) hips slid ahead of the ball at impact help bring the hands up there too and strike the ball with the wedge maintained?
-
am i under or over plane? What's the name of the thread that has the drill posted? I found the drill. My hips are almost at the ball at impact and my wrist is nice and cupped. Think I found out what I need to work on.

My swing has gotten weird, and I've been hitting balls fat and thin all over the place. I have an idea of what the problem is, and I was wondering if you guys could take a look and suggest some changes/ways to practice them at the range to ingrain them into my swing. I think those shots were with my PW. Again, I'm not searching for perfection, I just want to get back to making decent contact. Thanks. ~Ian

I hope I don't do that usually. But I guess it is a toe shot. It has the feel of a "thin" or bad contact shot, but for me a thinned shot goes right at the target, just low and long, not week and right. I think I may just be too far away from the ball at address?
-
I'm making a move towards the ball. These videos aren't the best, but they show what I'm talking about. Found a ball mark right on the toe of one of my irons.
-
Quite possibly. I know I must be way open at impact and I don't get that compressing the ball feeling when I hit these types of shots.
-
Help! (This is a straight push that's about 15 yds short of a well struck shot, where the ball starts right and stays right, but has very little, if any sidespin.)
-
Wonder how iacas feels about stack and tilt? I wonder what would happen if basketball was taught by joe average golf pro? "You ran down the court too quick that time."
-
I voted chin down. I had one instructor tell me to keep my chin up and I couldn't hit anything. The pro I currently go to has never said anything about my chin. Just to keep my inclination to the ground constant. Honestly, how can you hit the ball if you are not looking at it? Looking down your nose is crap IMO. Next time, go to the batting cages, and try to hit balls with your chin up.
-
Well you need to post your swing so we can help you. If you are truly hitting a big slice, and not a push shot, then the open club face is not your problem at all (see ball flight laws thread and match your ball flight path to one of the flights). It is most likely an outside to inside swing. You can do a search on this or over the top and will find some tips on how to fix the slice.

Played my league round today, and shot a 48! (Since my goal is to be a 90's player by the end of the summer, this shows progress for me.) Even better, I was +3 after 5 holes! A couple of bad drives and poor decisions really hurt me. All in all, fixing my tendency to dip my right side on the downswing is going to help me groove a decent swing. Anyways, here's my round. Hole 1 350 yd par 4 Hit a good fairway splitting driver that got me to UW range. Hit it to about 10 feet, and two putted for par. Hole 2 334 yd par 4 Pulled driver about 5 yards left of the fairway, hit my 56 to about 12 feet or so, two putt par. Hole 3 375 yd par 4 Good drive, missed fairway a little bit to the right. Pitching wedge got caught in the thick stuff, so I pushed it about 5 yards right of the green. Hit a pitch shot with the LW to 5 feet or so and saved par. Hole 4 378 yd par 4 Another good drive down the middle of the fairway. Hit the UW, but basically topped it to about ten yards short. Pitched on the green, and had an abysmal three putt from about 15 feet. +2 Hole 5 426 yd par 4 Horrible pull hook of the tee. Hit hybrid into two different trees, landed about 9i from green. Hit shot a little short, pitched on, and one putt bogey. +3 This is where I began to play a bit more like my handicap. Hole 6 208 yd par 3 Hit my 4 iron just right of the green and about ten yards short into a tree. Chipped out from inside the tree to the fringe and had about a 30 footer, which I wimped out on and 3 putted for a double. +5 Hole 7 371 yd par 4 Lost balance or something on the drive and hit a straight shot that cut hard right about 200 yards out. Tried to punch out from inside the trees, flubbed the shot and hit into more trees. Pitched out into thick rough. Hit my PW really well, about 10 yards too well. Ended up on the side of a steep hill, and chipped it to the fringe. I am now at the back of the green that slopes severely to the front, with the pin in the middle. So I play it safe and end a little on the short side, then on the second putt whack it past the hole. Third putt goes in for double par. +9 Hole 8 520 yd par 5 Did an anti-slice (pulled the ball) left of the fairway. Hit hybrid out of the rough, but hit the toe and pulled left into the neighboring fairway. Hit a poorly aligned 4i to the right of the green. Pitched on and two putted for bogey. +10 Hole 9 352 yd par 4 A great birdie hole that I straight pushed into a spruce tree. Had to take an unplayable lie drop. Overdid a 9i, pitched on, and two putted. +12 So I was happy to bag the below 50 and was really happy until hole seven. I tend to hit the trees a lot on that one. I'll have to try 4w on that hole next or something. In the end, I get 17 strokes on the front nine from my handicap, and my team is going to be happy with the -5 I'm posting.
