  1. Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but wanted to weigh in on Srixon irons. I was able to pick up a used set of Srixon i-302 irons with Rifle FCM 5.0 the other day for $90, on a whim. Frankly, after a few days on the range with them, I am stunned at how good they are. Most of the pub I could find on them was generally positive, but it's a whole different thing to actually hit them. To me, they are very much in line, if not better, than the Mizuno irons I've hit like the MP-62 (which I dearly love). Very soft feel, with that trademark forged "swoosh" sound when hit flush. I almost feel guilty for getting them so cheap now. I was playing Nicklaus N-1 "The Bear" irons, and these seem to have a touch less distance. I can also see the cavity in the 3-iron at address but I'll get over it. These clubs are marvelous.
  2. Of the new forged irons I've hit lately, I would rank them like this 1) Callaway 2009 X-Forged 2) Mizuno MP-62 3) Titleist AP2 The price is nice on the Bridgestone J-36. I would definitely try those too.
  3. Great question. I like those choices, especially the 755's. There seem to be a ton of Titleist DCI sets on ebay for $200 or less. If you want to go REALLY cheap, check out some Nicklaus N-1's. I played those for a long time and I believe it's a steal getting a set that good for around $50. Happy hunting!
  4. I do. The largest driver I have is a 983K, but I've gone to using a 975D 7.5*; like you, I seem to hit the smaller headed clubs better, or at least have more confidence in them. Maybe it's because I'm concentrating more on a good swing. My home course is REALLY tight, so the 975D helps me keep the ball down, and I haven't noticed any distance loss.
  5. Trying to give Dave a run for his money...
  6. I was sad to reach the end of this thread. More horror stories please.
  7. Can you use the driving range anytime, or is that after 3pm only too? I'd say get the membership and wear out the range. You could try some other Hogan irons off ebay for cheap. If I recall, those Apex Plus have way more offset than all the rest, I didn't much care for them.
  8. OK, Dave wins. Love those particular Apex irons.
  9. Along those lines, what's the best way to repair a divot when the fairway grass seems to splinter (no beaver tail), and you're walking, so no cart w/ seed mixture.
  10. Congrats on your new 3W. I recently picked up my 906F2 and it made me a true believer. Really nice at setup, weight feels just right in my hands, and the sound is so sweet. In all honesty, it's a warhammer. Outdrives my driver (which ain't sayin' much). Now I have the urge to check out a 909D3...
  11. When I saw this thread, I immediately thought of Pin Oaks. So glad to know its legendary status is intact. I heard it closed, which is of course unfortunate. One of the best places I know to play without clothes and chug beer-a-hole funnels. Such good times. I miss the clover covered tee "boxes" (those were the nice ones).
  12. Have you by chance hit i10's? Wondering how much difference there is with the new i15. I hit some i10 irons and thought they were really nice. Not real mushy soft, but solid.
  13. I demoed some Callaway X-Forged irons recently, and those have an incredible sound on pure shots. Not a thwack, more like a thwwww. Beautiful.
  14. Not sure why, but I haven't it found it too terribly difficult to hit. I do like to work with it on the range a lot, cause it will tell you when your swing is faulty much more so than a 7 iron will. Helps me work on hitting the center of the club face. A nice smooth, confident swing will get the job done. Don't have to swing harder to make it go farther, just unwind like normal. I like it for driving on super tight holes because on mishits I usually just lose distance, but direction stays pretty true.
