Yeah, I'll try to hit some clubs before I decide. I've decided that I'm just going to spend as little as possible while still getting some clubs that I want. Right now I'm thinking about getting: Titleist 910 F-d 15* 3-Wood Titleist 910 H 19* Hybrid Mizuno MX-300 4-GW Irons Titleist Vokey 54* Titleist Vokey 58* I'm probably going to get them all off of a big reputable eBay golf store, so it should come to around $1100.

I played for the first time since 2008 yesterday. I wasn't expecting to do very well after that long and with some crap clubs, but I did better then I expected. I only played 9 but I shot a 44. A couple pars, a double-bogey and the rest were bogeys. My best shot of the day almost led to a birdie, but the putt stopped an inch short. I think I could have done a few strokes better, but since I hadn't played in forever and was using strange clubs I didn't know my distances and was having a hard time committing to shots.

Same.

Thanks Lanky, good tips there. I'll definitely be smart about it and follow everyone's tips.

Okay thanks, I'll do that. It's cool that they do that. Ahh, I didn't think about this. Thanks. And I'll use Paypal for sure. Yeah, I see what you're saying. However, I've never been to have clubs tweaked or changed. I just play them as is. I'm using some $100 irons right now so I'm sure I won't have a problem with the Mizunos.

What are your thoughts on buying clubs from eBay? The reason I ask is because I want to get a set of Mizuno MX-300 irons, but at big retailers they still seem to be about $600. I looked on eBay for some and there seem to be many sets in the ~$400 range. I keep hearing about counterfeit clubs, but I am wrong in thinking that a person with 99.9% positive feedback on 7,000 things should be pretty legitimate?

Until it's irretrievable or damaged to the point where it's affecting play. I had a lucky ball that I used for numerous tournaments in highschool until it found it's way into a pond via a random rock.

Well, I'd ASSUME they were doing it to just listen to music. I don't know what more of a reason there is. I'm not sure how music would help rhythm and it's not like headphones instantly make someone look cool. During practice in high school, sometimes when my team was all on the range and there were no patrons, I would turn on some classical music on a small boombox.

After chipping with a SW with an Iomic grip a few days ago, I think I'm going to get some for my Mizuno irons and Titleist woods once I order them. And my friend jokingly said to get a different colored one for each club. And I thought that was lame until I thought about it. And now I might do it for shiggles. They feels really nice. Not abrasive or hard to grip. Just a nice feeling grip that works well in my hands at least.

Chipping was, and hopefully still is the best part of my game. I first learned and got good with the Bump & Run and low chips. Then I started messing around with flop shots and SW shots and I got good with that too. A lot of the time I felt more comfortable with a chip than a long putt. I seemed to have a knack for knowing how hit the ball when chipping. If I was on the fringe or 10' or so off the green, then I knew that I could get really close my chip. I think part of it came from spending hours and hours a week chipping at the practice green or in my yard. I put Chip and Run because I used that most and got amazing results with it.

I'm a fan of videography and film-making, and I check Vimeo's HD channel all the time, and here's a pretty recent video that caught my eye. http://vimeo.com/channels/hd#22329918 Quote: An ESPN E:60 short TV doc on Golf in India. I haven't played since 2008, but when I played in HighSchool I was a pretty long hitter. I didn't use a driver all that often because my accuracy with it was inconsistent and it was hurting my scores. But I could hit it very long sometimes. There's a par 4 at my local course and it's about 310 to the middle of the green, and on a few occasions I was able to drive the green. The slight down-slope 3/4 of the way to the green helped a lot though. I mostly played 3-iron off the tee though. For a couple years I didnt even carry woods to tournaments. I got really good with a 3-iron and could hit it about 230 average, and sometimes I could blast them to about 250. I was kinda known in my region as the kid who always used the 3-iron and hit it far. I even did really well in a long drive contest at golf camp. 314 yards, but that was off a cliff teebox and with the wind. It was insane watching it though. Once I start golfing again I plan on working on accuracy more than distance, but I'm still gonna try to be amazing with a 3-iron.

I'm getting back into golf next month, and I've set my budget at $1500. But I'm going to aim a lot lower than that and see what I can come up with.

I broke 80 after playing 4 days a week, every week from April to October for 2 years.

Anyone playing with the TaylorMade xFT wedge?
clamber replied to thegraduate18's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I might get one, but I keep wondering why they're so much cheaper than other wedges, especially when it seems like it takes more to make one. -
Playing without woods. Thoughts?
clamber replied to clamber's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Well that's what I'm curious about . I wonder how far I could hit a 17* hybrid. And with SureFit I could make it 16.25* if I needed too. And I would eventually get the driver and 3-wood, but it might be beneficial to work on irons and hybrid first though, right? I don't think it would be that bad just to get me out and playing again, especially if I can hit the hybrid consistently far and long. Both good ideas. I could find a cheap 3-wood for some holes. And a par 3 course sounds beneficial and fun as well. I've never played any, but a google search shows that there are a few in my area. -

At the time I had a fade bias swing…I could hit my irons pretty well even long irons but would tend to slice my woods and get myself in trouble…so after a few tournaments not scoring well enough to compete I decided at the next tournament I would not play anything but irons all day (longest iron in the bag was a 4 iron) and because it was being played from around 6,200 yards…I got a few weird looks from my playing partners but ended up shooting an 80 and winning the tournament for my flight…the funniest thing about the whole day was when we got back into the clubhouse my playing partners went on and on about how far I hit a 4iron…one even said I probably hit a few 300 yards…reason they were saying this was because most of the time I hit my 4 iron as far as they hit their drives (200-210yds) and I guess they did not want to admit they only hit their drives that far…LOL Even today as a 7 handicap I have a problem with Drivers and don’t even own one currently (see my sig)…I think it is the big heads that off me…I hit a strong 3 wood off the tee and have a 2H for my fairway wood…oh and now my swing method is the S&T.; Haha, that's awesome. I remember it feeling so good to hit an amazing tee shot with a long iron and being in better position than everyone else. And I totally know what you mean about people saying you hit it further than them just to cover up their distances! I think I may try and get one of the Titleist 910F-d 3-woods that are 13.5* after a couple months or so. I guess the F-d version is good for tee shots, and at 13.5* it should be a good option for par 5s. Quote: Originally Posted by mgolfer I ditched my 3 wood a long time ago. My hybrid off the tea i hit around 200/210 and I am pretty consistant with it on or off the fairway. So why would I need a 3 wood? I am very consistant with the hybrid so I would prefer to lay up short to the long par 5s and chip on than to risk it with a 3 wood! I guess it all depends on the course you regularly play and the scores you are going for. I agree with laying up + a chip over using a wood. Hitting a 3-wood to a green never ended very well for me. Maybe you have your eye on one now that will be much cheaper when you're ready for it. I'm sure you know this already, but make sure you get the right flex and length for your new clubs. There's no sense making this harder than it has to be. Oh, and playing without woods has a term now; you're playing golf "Elin style." I don't think this term had that meaning when you left the game. Thanks! The first year or so of not playing wasn't too bad, because I wasn't physically capable of playing. But over the past little while, I've been watching golf a lot on TV, and man, it brings back a lot of fun memories and the desire to play again is now overwhelming. Especially considering how many hours I played. I spent so much time at the local links with my team and just by myself, that after a while I had a key to the gate. I honestly think that if I can hit the hybrid well, both in distance and consistent accuracy, then I think I might be better off without a driver. I've always been more concerned with accuracy, and with irons I was accurate, but woods not so much. Elin style, that's hilarious! -
Hey guys, what are your thoughts on playing without any woods? The reason I ask is because I'm dying to get back into golf after a 3 year absence, and I want to get some good new clubs, but I also don't want to spend the full $1500+ on the clubs I want. I just want to get out and play right now. So, I'm thinking about not getting a driver or 3-wood right away. I'd just get a hybrid, 4-GW iron set, sandwedge, and putter. And then maybe later this year pick up the driver and 3-wood. Right now, this is a setup I'm thinking about. Titleist 910H 17* Mizuno MX300 4-GW Titleist Vokey 56* Odyssey White Hot #7 And for a bit of background about my game. Like I said I haven't played since October 2008. I broke my wrists then and had to give golf up for a while. But now my wrists are back at 100% and I can swing a club just as before. I played golf in high-school in 06-08 and would play at least 4 days a week, every week from April to October. During this time, I was never that good with a driver or 3-wood. I missed the fairway often with a driver, and I wasn't very consistent with a 3-wood. For a couple seasons I would play in tournaments without woods, and I ended up becoming pretty good with long irons. That's the main reason I'm considering not getting and woods right now. So what do you guys think about not having any woods in the bag? Can you guys think of any advantages? I guess the only disadvantage would be length. I'm sure I'd end up having to use the hybrid more than once on some holes, so it'd be pretty important to become as accurate, long, and consistent as possible with it. If I can do that, I'm thinking I should be alright without woods. But I'd like to hear what you guys thought. Thanks.

52 degree gap wedge or 24 degree hybrid
clamber replied to SpeedBum9's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Firstly, I commend you on not using a driver at this point. Too many people get caught up in hitting it far and don't learn properly. I myself didn't use a driver at first, and it became obvious that it was beneficial when long irons became a strong part of my game. As for your question, it's kinda hard to say. A gap wedge would be nice to be able to have another option for short shots. But at the same time, I'm a believer that a gap wedge isn't entirely needed in the bag. Pitching-wedges can be pretty versatile if you practice a lot with them. Whether it be a shot in the back of your stance, or front. Or even opening the face up a bit when doing greenside shots. I've never used anything other than a PW and SW and have been able to hit a wide range of shots. I think a hybrid might be a good choice. It's nice to have a club that you can hit off the tee or off the fairway on approach. If you can use it and take advantage of it, I say get one. It's better to get on the green, than have to chip onto the green obviously. And if a hybrid can help you do that, then that's a wise choice. I'm not sure about 24* though, but I don't know what irons you have. -
Could Luke Donald Really Be the World's Number One Player?
clamber replied to Chilli Dipper's topic in Tour Talk
I think he can. He's been my favorite golfer for about 6-7 years now since I was a freshman in highschool. I was dying today when he went into the bunker. I'm bummed that he didn't win, but it's obvious that he's a great player and in my mind, he will one day soon be #1. And as it turns out, sponsor marketing actually works, he was the reason I bought Mizuno irons back in the day, and that purchase solidified my love of Mizuno now. -
OMGosh, they made a giant scale R11 to promote the real R11?! How disgusting, do they have no standards at all? Of all the things I thought they'd do, I'd never expect them to use a unique and cool idea to help advertise their clubs. Despicable. Really though, who cares? Even if this were remotely a big deal, it still wouldn't actually be a big deal.

Mizuno MP53s. I might pick some up next month.
