JoshKeller replied to JoshKeller's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting

Bridgestone j33 forged cavity back irons?

whats the general opinion of these? Have the chance to buy a set from a friend for $125, in like new shape. -
and finally, a knockdown shot i use for high wind days.

this is the first time ive ever watched my swing on video. never had a lesson, everything is self taught through reading and tv. my typical shot is a slight draw, and after working on the wrist hinge suggestions last night, I immediately picked up 10 yards. What do you see besides a really tall dude looking like a fool. one thing that stands out to me is my left leg gets a pretty good bend. contact is very good, most shots are in the center of the club face. First two are of a full swing.

describe the "feel" of your swing..
JoshKeller replied to JoshKeller's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
most definitely, the flat wrist at the top is most consistent to me. A cupped wrist leads to hooking the ball for me. I'm just trying to get the "correct" way to swing, so I can experiment and see which works best for me. So far, taking the club back in one peice, so that its directly behind me,pausing slightly, and then "flipping"the club up and back with my wrist produces far better impact and consistency than consciously hinging the wrist during the middle of the swing without the pause. The method of taking the club back and turning, and allowing my wrist to hinge from the weight of the club towards the end of the swing feels good, but its something I will have to work on tomorrow morning. I will likely make a video of my swing, but honestly, im a bit nervous that watching it will make me make more changes than I can grasp at one time. -

and i assume that this is where the real light grip comes into play - to allow your wrist to freely hinge on the half and wedge swings? -
describe the "feel" of your swing..

so you dont conciously include the wrist hinge into your swing? I can completely feel what your saying by taking a few slow swings with a hybrid with the head cover on, but my wrists tends to hinge with a bend instead of my wrist being flat. -
allow me to say, i do have a reason for asking.. Ive never had a serious coach, self taught, have never really watched my swing on video. As for my question.. when making your backswing, does it feel as though you come most of the way back, then very slightly pause and cock the wrist, or is it one seemless motion? Reason for asking, is when I feel I have a slight pause when the club is directly behind me and cock the wrist (while completing my turn), i hit the ball with much better contact. Cocking my wrist in the middle of taking the club back (seemlessly, so to speak) result in hitting the ground before the ball - I believe its due to my left wristbreaking down just before impact, versus it staying rock solid when I use the pause method. Im sure this sounds rediculous, but thanks for any help that can be provided!

How Many Wedges Do You Carry?
JoshKeller replied to teece31's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
with my set of cobra irons, the pw is 44 degrees, and the gap wedge is 48.5 degrees. I tend to look at these irons as one club stronger than standard. I also have 52, 56, and 60 degree cg14's -
Question for low handicappers who play/played with high handicappers
JoshKeller replied to Tugglife2's topic in Golf Talk
im not a single handicapper, but i tend to flirt with breaking 80, and my biggest golf friend is a 63 year old that is lucky to break 100 on the first 12 holes. I dont get upset at all, in fact, he's a blast to play with, because he knows he isnt great, and acknowledges it. He plays at the pace he's comfortable with, lets me play at my pace, and asks advice frequently. -
Do you match name brands in your bag?
JoshKeller replied to jmanbooyaa's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
cobra driver, hybrid, and irons. cleveland wedges, odyssy putter. No so much as brand loyalty, but i started with a cobra driver, realized i hit it better than most others i tried, so it lead me to try the other cobras. -
hey guys, have a chance to pick up a set of mizuno mx19's at a slammin price. 4 - gw. Currently play a set of cobra sz. any opinions on the mizunos? Would they be considered an upgrade over the cobras? Love the cobras, but they are just so much more sensitive to ball placement (cant put them in the back of my stance to hit a lower shot - they just fade off) - never had the problem with my taylor mades.

Hooking the ball - drills to limit my release
JoshKeller replied to JoshKeller's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
just a little update. I played again today, and found that choking up 3" and making my iron swing produced perfect drives. Not quite as far (235 - 245) carry, but nice and straight, and I found I can fade or draw the ball just like with my irons. So now, would it be worthwhile to have my driver shaft cut down and regripped, or just play with the choked up grip as is? -
Hooking the ball - drills to limit my release
JoshKeller replied to JoshKeller's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
whats the chances that an adjustable driver will help me? I'm not too sure, but my irons are VERY consistant, and its really just my driver that hooks. I'm hitting a cobra speed pro m driver, with cobra sz irons. Both are regular flex, 1" long. -
Hooking the ball - drills to limit my release
JoshKeller replied to JoshKeller's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
i think that is my problem as well. playing baseball for so many years, I was always taught to "roll" the fore arms to pull the ball. my right hand comes over my left, and closes the face securely. Any pics of the grip your using? -
Hooking the ball - drills to limit my release
JoshKeller replied to JoshKeller's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I play the ball inline with my big toe on my front foot - the ball is directly inline with my left shoulder. I use the short tees, and about 1/3 of the ball is above my driver (cobra speed pro). I would like to think im sliding my hips enough, but its hard to say. I tend to feel like im thrusting my belt buckle towords the target -
First off, I'm tall ( 6'5"), and generate good club head speed. However, Im caught in between two problems. If I take my full swing, I tend to over release, and my right arm will come over the left just before impact, leading to the dreaded hook. If I hold off, I tend to hit it to the right, presumably, due to no releasing at all. This is mostly a driver problem, I tend to hit my 4 - lw pretty straight and in control. Any drills for me to work on? Thanks guys!

I do alot of walking when I golf, and the $30 cheap plastic cart I've been using for 2 years just isnt cutting it anymore. I'd like to invest in a nice 3 wheel push/pull cart. My budget is about $150. Looking on ebay, I can get a full blown bells and whistle cart with seat, etc for $140, or a lighter cart for $125. anyone have any personal favorites?

Yes, my alignment isnt much of a problem off the tee or with irons. for some reason, i just cannot line up my putts. anything further than 2.5 or 3' away is trouble. I did try a suggestion of using a blinder patch (over my right eye) yesterday, with better than usual results.
-
no, my putting is why i'm an 11. I can routinely 3 putt from 10 feet. not bragging, because it sucks, i just have a horrible time lining up on anything close. I actually draw my hunting bow right handed, and shoot only with my left eye open - its that bad. my home course is not difficult, (in fact, its only about 5,000 yards from the whites), but dont call me a liar when you dont have any idea about my condition. also keep in mind that i stated LAST round, not every round. It was an exceptional round. My entire point was that I'd rather swing at 75% and hit fairways, than swing at 110%, and hit the ball 50 yards further, but miss the fairway.
-
I'm a 11ish handicapper, and i rarely drive farther than 230 yards. I'm 6'5" and a nice easy swing gets me 225 down the middle. If i swing hard, I can hit the ball a lot further, but accuracy suffers, and Id rather play 225 straight, than 275 all over. last round i played, i hit 12 out of 12 fairways with the driver, and 16 out of 18 greens. I just cant putt to save my life (left eye dominant, right handed)
-
i've had about the worst case of the hooks I've ever seen. I mostly solved it by NOT hinging my left wrist, and just making a bigger turn, but not overswinging. My only 2 thoughts when I swing are solid left wrist, and watch the ball fly off the center of the clubface.

hey guys, i'm josh. 26 years old, been playing golf since i was 12. took a 2 year break from 05 - 07, then took it back up and got serious again.

i shot an 81 from the whites at the woods resort. rating of 67.6 and a slope of 116. Should have been much better, putting killed me.
