So I posted a question a bit ago, 'should i quit'. Much insight in that thread. kept me thinking, this is something I am going to do , even if it kills me, so I better enjoy it. I sure do enjoy planning to go, and being on the course, but oh gad...those bad shots are seriously causing me brain damage. I'm NOT kidding. I really think I am losing my mind out there lol. Today, after work. I went out golfing. About 2 weeks ago I had an instruction. First of what was supposed to be several. After the first lesson, I didn't feel $100 / hr was cheap enough for what I got from the lesson. Now, I realize, what I learned from the lesson is that I really stink. My instructor told me I had a nice swing, but when I really swing, not trying to do it for show, I STINK. Not sure where to go from here. has anyone had this issue? you get MUCh worse before you get better? My good games are getting better, but my bad games are OH so bad. I changed my grip. I guess I was overlapping two fingers instead of one. I noticed today that I was going back to just one overlapping, and was SERIOUSLY slicing the ball, hitting the ball fat or just all out topping the ball. You know, stuff I did 10 years! ago. I'm just not sure where to go from here. I guess maybe really look into that grip and decide on what I'm going to do and stick with it? Also, apparently, over the last months...and even last year. I was hitting the ball rather poorly. I developed this old man swing that consists of me not turning my hips or bending my right knee. Im literally locking my right knee and just chopping at the ball. Any suggestions please? I really feel like I'm sliding down and need to wakeup! I feel like I need deprogrammed, and that much of this is all mental that forced me into bad habits. A fair game is a fluke at best.

Ok so, before I picked up a used set of irons about 5 years ago, I used to use a sandwedge around the green for all my shots. I became rather ok with it. About the only part of the game I did ok with. With my new set, it went only to pw. So I picked up a Nike Slingshot OSS sandwedge. I don't know the stats on it, but the sole is SUPER WIDE and the bounce seems pretty high. I either line drive the thing, or loft it so high and about 1/2 to the hole. I have never been able to use this club. A golf range owner who also does instruction , told me the club was made for beginners to at least get ahold of the ball. I'm a high handicap and can't play it to save my life. So my question is, are wedge blades a better approach, something with a 1" sole or less? what about bounce? Not sure where to go to even attempt to fix this issue. Oh and did I mention, the club is SUPER heavy too. Feels like a rock tied to a pole. Any suggestions? Has anyone had any experience with the heads from GolfWorks? http://www.golfworks.com/product.asp...155_A_cn_E_667 My current PW is a 46* and just too strong to put it on the green and keep it there up close. The only time I can work this NIKE club is when I am in the deep rough about 20 - 30 yards away if that helps understand why I am so bad with this club. Everything else in my game has improved VERY slightly.. But now, ever since having more and more problems with this sandwedge, I am not having some problems hitting my pw and 9 iron! It's like it's rubbing off on those clubs. I'm so stressed grabbing the clubs now. I'm even started to shank the PW shots ..>AND IM NOT HITTING THE HOSEL!? HOW am I hitting it so far off? Is it the weight difference and I'm not getting it around? oh help! lol Thanks!

seems like a decent price. Did you make sure the club length/lie/shafts are for your game?

does anyone know which driver they used to replace the 5900 sumo? I had one, for a brief stint, but after a bit of use the shaft broke on me. The shaft alone to replace is $120 (Proto vs 65). I bought it used from Golfsmith, they are sending it back to Nike for me but from talking to them, they almost didn't send it because they felt it was past time for them to do anything about it. After they spoke with someone in the back, they took down my info. I really liked that club, and can't find it now. Was wondering what a replacement would be. Golfsmith has a deal online for a SQ DYMO 2 with a stiff flex shaft and 9.5* for $129 plus shipping and tax, thinking of picking that up while I wait to hear from Nike about my club (up to 3 weeks aka almost end of regular season golf) I wonder what type of shaft they stick on there though. Thanks

A local club just opened up, and well, I expected much better. The staff was a bit rude. The people at the 19th hole were drunk, and it looks like its a gathering of guys that have been there before time. They seemed annoyed at people they didn't know sitting near them or using their facilities. The course was just ok, the shape of the cartpaths was bad. The neighborhood is going down hill quick. They forced landlords into renting to low income years ago, and it spread like a plague. Now the entire area is mid lower class at best with large pockets of below poverty surrounding it. So of course, the roads that traverse near the club, are also plagued with the same people that feed off of the people that work for a living, so these people can lounge around all day. And of course, they enjoy beeping their horns and flicking cigarettes out toward the golfers....the people that pay their rent, healthcare, etc. Thankfully, I did not have anything to throw that I didn't care to keep. I wont go back there for a long time. And from what I've heard, the cops don't do anything because they are busy keeping these same people from killing each other. I say let them. Another course about 15 minutes from me, has a famous designer (name slipped), was 18k per year to join and suddenly went public. Greens fees are only 65 and a monthly membership is only 200 now for unlimited golf!!! I'm hopefully going to check them out this weekend or possibly friday. we shall see. Looks like a wonderful course. Fairly new too. 2001, public as of last year. S

Thank you sir, I tried to look that up online but came up with a mixed bag of info. How do you all feel about el cheapo warbirds? I seem to really hit these bad for some reason. I have 24 new ones that I'm thinking of taking back though. Sorry to hijack the thread, guess I could have just started another...

Does anyone know what ball is now the One Black. As a high handicapper that slices the ball, whenever I would hit a certain shot and would look up expecting it to slice heavily, it only sliced a bit or even faded. I golfed an entire round with this ball and it's the only one I have. Found it out of a grab bag of balls for 75 cents a ball and honestly, for me it's between the pro v1's and this ball. The v1 seems to stay lower and responds nicely, and feels nice, but I hear these are expensive and usually for someone that is better. I did notice it does slice easily if I'm hitting poorly, but if I accidently hit it bluntly, not getting under it, it doesnt shoot as far over the green :) The nike One Black was very much like this but seemed more tolerant of my lesser skills.

Should I quit? Serious question

WOW! Thanks for the replies! Would have replied sooner but, I was golfing :) To the last poster about posting my swing, heck I never thought of that. I will surely give it a try. Went out with my boss, shot a 46 with a lost ball and a bad easy par 5. Guess it wasn't so easy. Only had time for 9. Short course, par 4's averaged 311 yards. added the 7 up and divided by 7 to get that. Almost drove 2 short greens, and still bogey'd them. I used to be rather ok with my wedge , now with this new one I'm so bad. Should have kept that 30 year old wedge ! Putting was so so. Had some nice putts. Average drive distance was pretty low. Maybe 250? Alot of wind and some exceedingly high shots brought that down. Wind never seemed to play into my favor until I really needed it to get over a giant clump of trees. Was a very nice shot. There usually is that one shot that keeps me coming back for more. I think for many of us that is all we need, even on a 110 day. Maybe that is why I hope for better results so much, to have MORE of that. I guess it really is like a drug. The only thing different I did today, and honestly this day could have been MUCH better without the lost ball or bad par 5, was that I didn't overthink the grip. I read a few tips on here and it really seemed to help. I do this strange thing that I cover my left upper hand with two fingers instead of just the pinky. The one time I lined up I noticed that I only had one on the left hand, was a short iron. Everything went fairly well, because I didn't second guess myself. I felt some pressure to move quickly as I was with my boss and he didn't have that long to play. Anyway, thanks for the advice guys. I'm going to keep at it and as suspected, 8 times per year isn't enough. But unless I really let things fizzle out here shortly, I'm already on track to go about 14 times this year. If I break 90, just once, I know it will carry my through the looooooooooooooong winter and force me to get out onto the range. Glad to see that there are so many like many. Out on the course, pissed at your bad shots...come home , clean the clubs and already on google mapping out your next course to visit! :) Thanks again! Hopefully I will be as upbeat if I hit a 112 next weekend. -
Should I quit? Serious question
Sincraft replied to Sincraft's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I enjoy planning to play, reading about playing, watching golf, and even golfing itself to some degree. It's after the game that remorse and a bit of 'what did I just waste all that time and money for' sets in.. AND... about 2 hours later, I can't wait to go again. Sickness? -
At 39, I still happy to break 100. Ok, no I'm not. But that's a good day. My courses are short, but challenging. Many hills, blind shots, changing conditions etc. Excuses aside. Backstory : at 22? I started golfing with my brother. Baseball bat grip. Finally started working with a left arm straight approach on backswing, and felt the club twisting in my hands during the backswing. Was able to consistently hit mid to upper 90s. About 4 or 5 years ago, I was sick of this. I took 2 lessons. First lesson I was hitting my 7 iron 165 yards straight. 2nd lesson, couldn't get it back. Instructor was watching a woman near me. Skipped 3rd. In the past 4 or 5 years, I've only gotten to get out about 8 times per season. I changed my grip and am still struggling with it. I'm still shooting a 100. Should I give up? I took another lesson recently and it really screwed me up. I picked up a NIKE SUMO 2 sq 5900 with a Proto vs 65 stiff shaft used, and was hitting it like a dream. Shot a 92 (42 front nine) at a tough course. The next outing the club head flew off on my downswing. is this (insert your higher power here)'s way of saying STOP you fool STOP! Serious. I could easily spend the money on ...insert expensive hobby here that requires no skill!... I recently picked up snowboarding (yes I know Im 39) and love it. So there is my winter hobby. Now what? in case you read this far, and are mildly amused at my crying shame of a golf experience...please, read further. Grip. I've changed this about 3 times. Right now it appears I have a good grip. Two golf instructors (one just watching me) and another I paid for a lesson $100 for the hour, said my grip was fine. But I noticed that both my pinky and my ring finger are overlaping on my left hand (im righty). When I just try to put my pinky on my hand, it hurts..bending it wierd. This can't be right. Ok now it appears my grip needs help! Stance. Apparently I'm standing too close to the ball. When I tried to move further out using several techniques to ensure I'm far or close enough away, I've started now shanking the ball. AND NO, I AM NOT HITTING THE HOSEL!!!! AHHHH! I can't stop shanking the ball now. I'm at my wits end. I can literally stand 45 degrees away from target and hit a fairly straight shot down the fairway...not joking. I have one guy telling me lean on toes and that will predicate the distance of the club, then shift back to balls of feet, another guy telling me weight should be towards the back of my feet. When I was just hacking away before taking this all serious and trying to learn the 'proper' way of doing things to get better, I was able to hit my wedge pretty well. I picked up a used set of Calloway x-16's and they seem pretty good, but it did not include a SW. Now I have this big giant nike slingshot that is either skying the ball too much or I end up topping it. My old sandwedge was so reliable. But it was really really old. So i tossed it! I wore out the bottom I used it so much. I was really good with that thing, it saved my butt. Now for the life of me I can't really hit this SW, and it has started to affect my PW shots too! I'm shanking and slicing with this puppy. Sadly, I'm able to actually hit my long irons and drives with a slight slice or fade, sometimes even straight. But the shorter the irons, the worse I'm getting. I'm hitting a PW up to 7 iron the same distance, when it goes straight. I'm just doing very very bad and see no advancement. In the past 2 years, I'm trying to get out as much as I can, at least once every 2 weeks. That 'should' end up being 12 rounds of golf. If I could do better, I would get out more. And my range efforts are no better. I feel like I am ingraining bad learning when I goto the range. The only thing the range has done for me is taught me how to hit my driver over the fence. That's all I have going for me, I can hit my driver about 275 yards on the fly...couple bounces later and the range is losing balls when I use my driver. Especially when my sumo2 5900 was working alive :( (RIP!) So, I'm not sure what to do. I tried an expensive lesson with a local pro for $100 for the hour. No video, no analysis, just a guy telling me what was right or wrong. He did tell me I had a nice swing. But how can that be when I SUCK so bad. I really love this game. During peak summer months, I watch the golf channel constantly, I read stuff online, I dream about that perfect shot off the tee in the middle of the fairway, followed by that perfect 9 iron shot 5' from the hole. And I love the 19th hole fun afterwards. It's a great game, but maybe just not for me? Maybe I'll buy a boat? suggestions please? should I keep trying for lessons elsewhere until I find the right pro? I've had 3 so far and they really seem to put me back. I've tried videoing myself, but I can't really tell what is going on. I think I get tired and dont think straight at the range. Should I try getting fitted for the 'right clubs' at Golfsmith (are they reputable? ) Sorry for the length of my battlecry, but I need help bad. I can't live off of semi decent drives alone (and that too will die soon!) Oh yea, forgot to mention,I can't get rid of my slice either, when I try to adjust, I just duck it or severely hook.

is golf galaxy reputable for fitting ?

anyone ever gone on a golf trip alone?

I just turned 39, and doing 36 would be very hard for me. I've never tried it, but have done 27 a couple times before. Of course, I learned golf on my own the hard way and for almost 15 years just grabbed the club like a basebat bat and wacked at the ball. In the past four years Ive been trying new things and I THINK Im slowly slowly getting better....but at 39....geesh. And then I look at your handicap. yea, well...if I had a 2.6 I too would golf 36 per day multiple days!!!!!!!!! -
nice.. and in NC you can actually golf a bit more than us in the upper states. I envy you! by the way, how are the acuras holding up now adays? I have a nissan frontier and altima. Not too happy about the altima. Feels cheap after a year of age honestly. Not a bad car, my future wife is killing it quickly though. my frontier has been rather flawless for 4.5 years now. Thinking of trying acura next
