I have been noticing these in the pro shop, and finally got to try them out. I love the way they look, I play blades and I prefer a small clubhead with a thin top line and sloped sole. I also love the gunmetal-black look of these wedges. So anyhow, I was able to take them out and hit with them today. Wow. These wedges are fantastic, the feel is unbelievable, and you can really generate some serious spin with them. The faces are milled, just like the Vokeys I currently play, but the head is smaller. I absolutely love these wedges. I pulled the string on the ball almost every time, and was even able to open the clubface and spin several shots sideways on the green, which I was rarely able to do with my Vokeys. These are definelty going in my bag, now I just have to decide whether to buy them myself or drop them as a gift hint to the wife....as a gift from my mother-in-law is another candidate

Next time they give you all that civic bullshit about voting, keep in mind that Hitler was elected in a full, free democratic election- George Carlin

  • 3 weeks later...
got my solus wedge set a little more than a year ago, and never looked back. Next to the putter, the wedges are the most used club in the bag and these are worth every penny ($330) i paid for the 3 club set. The face of my 61* lob wedge is slightly rusted now though as i use it for all shots inside 85yds.

In my Bag-Boy NXO Revolver cart bag:

Yep... I have them as well. Not a household name and that probably is why more people don't play them... Have you hit them out of a bunker yet? Very good there as well...

I have their older 61° not the new simply because I don't hit it well enough, often enough... And I have a hard time yanking another club to have four wedges in the bag!

Is there a big difference between the old 4.1 model and the new 7.1 as far as playability etc (not just looks). There seems to be a huge price difference (double for the newer ones)

Not really. At least if you look at their specs. The 4's might have a bit of difference due to the cavity, but on paper, they are the same.

The difference is just that. The 4.1's are a perimeter weighted cavity back, while the 7.1's are a blade style. The difference in feel, forgiveness, and workability is accually quite high.

    • after some years experimenting around, I've settled on a mixed bag of mostly Pat Simmons vintage Tiger Sharks (the ones with the blue enamal on back of the clubheads): 3 thru 9 iron, + 3 wedges (PW, sand, chipper). Those super heavy clubheads really help me get my swing down and thru the ball. Also I carry an old Taylor 18-degree rescue club, 17-degree and 14 degree ImagineGolf metalwoods, and the famous Pat Simmons "alien" 1-iron. Finally a real brick-on-a-stick, the big-headed Bettinardi Ben Hogan model putter which is excellent for taking the break out of short putts and getting the ball hole high on long ones. Wait....is that 15 clubs? Oh well....
    • this topic brought to mind one my favorite golf-spectator memories. Back when, living in Santa Barbara CA, parked in my yellow cab just behind the 10th tee  (c. 380 yard par 4) at SB Muni golf course while eating lunch. A twosome comes by, and first up is this fat little mexican guy who takes a kinda squirelly practice swing, then addresses the ball and bashes a long, high, perfectly straight drive up to w/in about 5 yards of the green. Other guy is dressed to the 9's, pulls out what looks like a $300 driver....and hits a maybe 150-yard pop fly. Slams clubhead to the ground and yells, "it's fat! It's fat! Everything is fat today!!"  And that's how I learned what a "fat" shot is.
    • day 57. Technique practice in the net. Really trying to slow down.
    • It may not be surprising that in the previous 7,064 posts, this particular point has been discussed. To which I will counter: If we're talking about results, why only the majors? Unless you know something that I don't, neither of us are in any position to judge whether Woods or Nicklaus lived their overall life better, not that such a thing is even objectively measurable, nor is it relevant to the discussion.
    • As we've had to tell other people, the topic is which is the better GOLFER, not human being.
