my putter was originally 35"
then cut it down to 34"
then cut it down to 33"
now the length feel right and my stoke feels right
i didn't feel any other difference.

technically, swing weight will change if you change the shaft length.
if a shorter length fits you better, then you will putt better.
vice versa

It will mainly give it low self esteem. (rimshot)
Seriously, I believe it depends on how low or high you set your hands when you setup and whether you are more upright or more hunched over. Check yourself out in the mirror and see how it sets on the ground when you are set up.
My putter always acts adversly when cut it down and say bad things about it.

Don't forget to tip your waitresses. I'll be here all week.

I once asked this question of Ping Customer Service - the exchange:

You asked:
Do different length putters of the same model have different weight clubheads? Reason I ask: I own a 35" Anser 2 and I'm considering cutting it down to 34" or 33.5'. Will a 35" putter shortened to 34" perform any differently than a one that was 34" when purchased new?

Ping replied:
All of the putter heads weigh approximately the same (come out of the same mold). This being stated, we do not have a heavier head for shorter lengths. If you shorten your 35" putter down to a 34" or 33.5", it would be the same as if you ordered it that way originally. I hope this helps.

[QUOTE=joseywales;111370] ....Check yourself out in the mirror and see how it sets on the ground when you are set up.

My thoughts.... If it doesn't set correctly on the ground...you can have the lie angle adjusted. I wouldn't adjust the putter length to get the club square on the ground. Rather..I would suggest you want the putter length to allow the proper putting motion and not get blocked out because it is either too long or short.

This isn't what Scotty Cameron has to say.

The Scotties vary 10 grams per inch. 35" = 330 grams 34" = 340 33" = 350 Only a rule of thumb cuz if you make the putts who cares how much it weighs

I don't think head weight is a big deal either.... The intent isn't to get 'matched' swingweights as with your irons. In fact....many players will slap on lead tape and alter head weight.

One thing that wasn't addressed is that if you cut down a shaft...you alter the shaft flex/kick point. That will indeed alter the feel and performance of the putter relative to a newly minted putter.

A bit off topic.... Amazing how so many people are willing to pay $500 for a driver and skimp on putters and wedges. If anything...putters and wedges are the absolute scoring clubs that will make a difference in golf scores. Just think how many times a driver is pulled from the bag (low teens max a round) versus how many putts in regulation (18 holes x 2 = 36)....half the strokes!

As has been said previously, there is a balance between headweight and length. However, it doesn't matter as much as how you hold the putter in terms of lies. In general:

-Longer putter- hold it flatter
-Shorter Putter- hold it more upright

Having the correct lie is much more important that the length to weight ratio. If it makes you hold the putter better, go ahead and cut it down. Good excuse to put on a new grip too!

when you set up beside full length mirror, you want the mirror on your right or left side.
have a confortable setup. place the putter head under your eyes and you hands under your shoulder (with your arms straight or bend). take a grip and take note where you are gripping the putter.

try choke down first. put a tape at the end of your grip to mark the shortened length and play with that for a while. see how that works.

another way is get fitted

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
