Work hard at your rehab. Plenty of strength training, core work. Lots of stretching. It's going to be all right. You'll come back better than ever.

Yup, get well soon.

I feel your pain, literally. I broke my ankle one night after getting tanked with the boys. Stepped in a pothole in the street and broke it. 3 am on the busiest street in Downtown Montreal! Pretty funny though!

Get wel soon!

I severely sprained my left ankle a few years ago in a basketball game. Nothing requiring surgery, but black and blue up to my knee, lots of swelling, etc.

All I can say is work hard at your PT sessions, and be patient. You absolutely can come back from this with a complete recovery, but weight transfer in your swing will be an issue. It's a mental thing - we tend not to trust the joint after an injury like that.

Thanks to you all for your kind words and encouragement! I honestly feel like I

will be stronger and better after this!
Ben, that really sucks. Stay positive and know you will get back to it. I wish there was more I could say........

Wow, really? I'm famous, hahaha. That's neat. Sorry about your double though!?

Just a few ideas, tips, and suggestions. First, though, a question: how did it happen? Did you step on something? Did you slip? Or did your ankle just "give out" somehow? Anyway...

The injury happened as a bit of a fluke, ankle buckled underneath me, bad enough that it caused the damage that it did. Watched the whole thing occur too, like in slow motion.

I like and have actually always subscribed to the tip about not reading golf tips. It's something I tell my students too. I hate golf tips in mags and on TV, more harm than good I've always thought. Whenever I"m watching TV I'll immediately change the channel once I see a "tip of the day" type segment. Unless its from a pro I truly admire. Than I may just listen. This week during the Masters I plan on paying very close attention to the course, trying to learn about its setup in as much detail as I can, watching the players very closely. As well as the remainder of the events this season. It's time for me to really study this game in detail.

The worst part about this whole tragedy was the great couple of days I had planned for myself.

I was up at 6:50 in the morning to work my opening shift at the course. Off at 1:00, my plan was to head down to the desert and play The Stadium Course at PGA West at 4:00 one of my favorite courses of all time. That night I was to meet with a few members that were down that way for a nice sushi dinner. And stay the rest of that night at their place off the Mission Hills Gary Player course. The same Mission Hills that the LPGA was playing the next day, were I had a ticket waiting for me. A ticket that granted clubhouse access too. I really wanted to see Lorena play. It was my full intention to gain her attention, get her phone number, take her out for dinner, and make her fall in love with me. My boss has turned me into a huge Lorena fan. She is so cute!

Stupid ankle!

6:50 am on Thursday morning my life changed. Walking down a grass slope to get to my car, my right ankle buckled under me. I was left with it being dislocated and fractured in three spots. After spending hours in the ER with my leg in about the most uncomfortable position you could imagine, with my foot dangling to the right, I was told I would most certainly need surgery to fix what had happened. I went into surgery that night, and now find myself in a cast for three months, and not able to swing a golf club for at least six months after that.

couldn't you use this time to putt and chip? I would think getting those swing refined will help your game tremendously!

tardog, I am going to have the best short game around. Believe that!!

So, I went in for a check up today. Had the temporary cast taken off and the staples from my surgery removed. I got a few pics of the gore below. 7 Staples on one side and 13 on the other. I have very little range of motion in the ankle, but haven't really been playing around with it too much. Thankfully I've been given the okay to take the walking boot I have now off as I feel fit. That being the case I've been told to try and get my ankle moving. It is really quite sensitive. I also had Xrays taken, and from the looks of it, my surgeon was as capable as he looks. It is all healing tremendously well. So much so, that my surgeion is placing me on an accelerated rehab plan. I might be back to normal in as few as 4 months. It's all very exciting.

Well, one day shy of 4 weeks since my incident and I played my first holes of golf.

Last week I got one of those walking boots and was told that I can put a little weight on my foot, so I've been building my balance and working on my weight tolerance.

Today one of the phenom juniors from the course showed up and we went out. My initial thought was just to watch him play. But, I got the itch and grabbed one of his clubs on the first hole and hit the second ball he hit from the tee. A little PW from about 90 yards. Got it up on the green to about pin high. So I decided on the next hole to just play out with him. I was able to take 3/4 to 1/2 swings for the most part, and found that a driver had too little loft, so stuck with hybrid off the tee. Hit some really nice hybrids about 180yards by the end. I played 7 holes and had 6 bogeys and doubled the last.

I've gained a whole new perspective of what it'll be like to play golf in my old age. I thought for sure I'd hate not being able to make birdies and struggle making pars. But I must say, it was fun trying to play for pars.

Great. You are hobbled on a bad wheel and you still shoot comparable scores to me. Seriously though, I am glad to hear you are recovering well. Good luck with the continued rehab. There is no question, time off can make you really appreciate what you are missing. I have injured my ankles multiple times in basketball over the years. When I was a sophomore in college I rolled it up big time. It was a killer missing two preseason games. I was itching to get back out there.

After saying I didn't want to play too often with my bad leg, what did I do today? Played 18 holes... haha. I just can't stay away. Played pretty good too. Shot 13 over, that included a triple on 12 and a double on 17. Had 8 pars! And two legitimate birdie chances, but missed them both. Shot of the day was a 3 iron that I hit to our 193 yard par-3 8th to about 12 feet. Figuring my distance proved to be a challenge in the beginning, but came to find out that I really only lost about 1/2 a club's worth on the short/mid irons and about a club on the long irons. Hit only one drive, on the 18th hole, but cranked it! I should have been hitting it more. Most have hit it about 240 or so.

Advice....take it easy. Too much too soon makes for a set back...i.e. Gilbert Arenas. Understand the itch. Work more on your rehab than your game right now and you'll be good.

Oh, and I KNOW you enjoyed the ball striking.

Maybe chipping around and putting would be a better start instead of jumping right to the course.

Yeah, I suppose you are right. sheesh. Level headed people! I'll lay off. I do however, have my first physical therapy appointment tomorrow. Which I'm not looking forward to at all. I've got a pretty good tolrenace for pain, but from what everyone is telling me, this isn't going to feel good, at all...

    • Day 33 (13 Dec 25) - Worked on weight shift and resetting the left heel during downswing (after listening to a discussion on Golf School this morning on PGA Tour Radio).  It centered on how Jack Nicklaus lifted his lead heel and how long driver champs do as well.  Taking cues from that discussion, worked an exaggerated feel of the left heel working doing some swing drill in the backyard using the 7i.  Wrapped up the session by hitting a few low bump and run shots in the backyard - keeping the process slow and exaggerated.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
