Well, had a shocking night on the range, so prob not the best time to try out a new driver. Anyway, got a shot of the demo PING G10 (9 deg with the stock TFC stiff shaft).

Despite still hitting off the heel, it was nowhere near as bad as my 905R performed. Still a slight slice, but less erratic. Lovely trajectory, and a much longer carry - 905R carry approx 240 (well, it was short of the 250 markers) while the G10 was carrying beyond the 250 markers. The G10 draw is not an option as I don't like the off-set design.

One thing I did find was the G10 does not sit as well as I'd like at address - almost rolls, I guess to line up for a fade or draw. The G10 3 wood however sits perfectly still & square.

Price of the G10 clubs is fantastic compared to others (Callaway FT was much more expensive, and the TM was a fraction more)

Emirates did not have a launch monitor to check the flight & numbers so was not able to get swing speed etc - still not 100% that I need stiff, but was pretty happy with the results. They never had the V2 shaft on a demo club either. Pretty poor for a big club.

Also looked at the Callaway FT-5 - sits at a nice closed face, and feels very comfortable at address - did not try out as I really want the launch monitor analysis rather than just punting balls down the range.

TM Superquad - also face closed which I like. Nice weight. Again, never tried it though. Seems that TM focus on drivers, as their selection of fairways is limited , and nothing really seems a proper 'match' to the Superquad.

Bit dissapointed that Emirates Golf Club do not have a launch monitor to assist with the purchase. Best they can offer is the same as I can do on-line on the PING site to determine grip size. I'm at another club this weekend so will see what they can offer.

Guess I am going to have to wait until I get back to the UK at the end of next month to get properly fitted for new woods.

The hunt continues...

They're not current anymore, but the Callaway X460 drivers sit nice and square, and their fairway woods are very nice.

Likewise, the replacement driver, the Hyper X.

Phoned round a few courses last night to see what they offer for fitting, and all are pretty lame - none with launch monitor and so all they can offer is a selection of clubs on the range and pick what works best at the time.

Also went to a shop to see the selection again and think the following;

NIKE SQ 5000 & SQ2 3 wood - can't stand the grey powerbow area at the back of the club head. Just catches my eye too much I think. So its out of the running without being hit.

CALLAWAY FT-5 - is probably more than I am wanting to spend. The Hyper X looked nice though and was similar price to the PING G10

PING G10 - is looking promising, def from price point, reviews I have heard and availability here.

TAYLOR MADE Superquad is still up there due to my love of the R7 460.

Decisions, decisions!

I want to have a proper try of the PING G10... Do I need stiff or reg? 9 deg or 10.5 deg?

9 Deg, TFC129, Reg
9 Deg, TFC129, Stiff
10.5 Deg, TFC129, Reg
10.5 Deg, TFC129, Stiff

(Edited as I found out some more info on the Proforce V2 HL - I'm from North East Scotland... if & when I move home, playing with a high launch driver in the wind there will just kill my game... Think I'd stick with mid-trajectory offered by the PING TFC shaft.)

On a side note, I found this mini review of the G10 last night. Despite the guy seeming quite nervous, I was impressed by how fluid and simple his swing was! Also, he comments that it launches very low - the 10.5 launching like and 8.5 driver... this is different to other comments I have heard, which said it launches very high.

OH MY GOD!!

Just back from a session at the range trying to iron out my driving issues before an outing tomorrow...

Taylor Made day at the club, and 20% off Superquads to clear out the stock. Took a demo of a 9.5 stiff out on the range and... WOW!

Same great trajectory as my old R7 460 had, can't compare distance v the R7 460 as I haven't hit them side by side, but I don't think it is any shorter than the 460 was, and it is certainly a good 10+ yards longer than the 905R and undoubtably more consistent; I can still slice it, but more often than slicing its flyin gnear to straight with a very slight fade.

I can set it to draw for now (as it was when I tried it), and when I eventually fix the slice action I have in my swing, I can set it to neutral.

Heading back there shortly to pick up my new bat!!

Time to get the 905R up for sale, and the proceeds from that go towards a 3 wood. Poss Burner or preferably an R7 Ti if I can find one new.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
