Hello - new to the forum and golf :)
I have a set of 15+ year old Wilson clubs and a bag that is horrendously ugly. My first question is: should I buy a beginner set or buy a used decent set? I was looking at Callaway X-14 or X16 or Nike Slingshot OSS. If I decide to give up golf or get better clubs in the future, the used decent set will have more resale value.
I've played with my buddy's X-14's and like them, but I don't have much to compare them to... I'd say my swing speed is a little slow. I'm 5'7" and don't have a lot of upper body strength.

Looking to spend whatever the wife will let me, but I imagine it will be $300 or so for irons. She wants me to play with the old clubs for a while to see if I'm even going to keep playing, and if I like it and stick with it we can look into some nicer clubs. She is a wise woman, but I don't know how long I can put up with these things
Any advice or suggestions are welcome and highly appreciated!

Hello - new to the forum and golf :)

What kind of Wilson's are they?

I had Wilson Staff blades (FG-17?) for 10 years and now wish I hadn't sold them for beer money while in college. If you want an old club to feel "brand new," just get some decent grips put on the 5-PW and they will feel much better. DO NOT buy a new "beginner" set because you'll hate them when you improve and resale value is nothing. Get a used, non-premier brand (no Callaways...). Look at Tommy Armour 845's. You can find them used on E-bay for under $100--solid solid irons. And, you can probably sell them for almost the same amount if you decide to "move up" to something later. Good hunting and welcome to the world of the club ho!

Hello - new to the forum and golf :)

Do the wilson's look to be in good condition, what model? 15 years ago Wilson's were some of the best clubs on the market. Do they come with woods?

If you do decide to get a beginner set then I would go for a cheaper set that includes a bag and woods. Zevo at Golfsmith are decent. Besides $300 for a set of irons will not get you much unless it is a used set. Think about it also, $300 for irons $100 for a bag $200 for a driver $200 for a 3 wood. You are up to $800 in an instant. The cheap Zevo set is $149 for everything, even a sleeve of balls....

The Wilsons are in terrible shape - scratches and gouges and just generally look bad. No Wilson woods but there are a couple in there. I'll have to look at them closer to get a brand.
My wife has a set her dad gave her and the woods are literally made of wood :)

My buddy that has been playing for 2 years invited me to a 2 man scramble last weekend. On one shot he used a PW and over shot the green. I used a 9 iron and put it 6 feet from the pin. It was a nice and lucky shot :) I also had some amazing putts. That 9 iron shot and the few awesome putts were enough to make me want more.
I like hitting a PW in my back yard and am getting better at it, but I just don't want to develop bad habits. I stand on one side of the yard and try to land it in a flower bed on the other side that is circular and about 5 feet across. The distance is very short - 15 yards or so I'd guess. The beauty of it is I have my 4-year old retrieve the balls. He gets every one of them but sometimes has to stop to rest and won't bring me the ball. I accidentally hit him right in the face today, but it didn't break a tooth. Glad I didn't have to take him to the doctor...from now on I tell him to take off before I swing. By the way, he is a Miniature Schnauzer

The Slingshot OSS are the easiest set of the 3 your listed but my personal favorite are the X-14's. The better you get the more and more you will like the X-14's, and they still have a descent resale value.

The clubs are "Dynamic" by Wilson. They have been regripped with black and green grips that say "Griprite Swingrite".

I was pretty much in the same boat you are in about 10 months ago.
I ended up getting a used slingshot set for $280 and I really love them.
I'm only 5'8" and have a slow swing as well, but the SS gets the ball in the air pretty easily.
My golf game is far away from "working" the ball so i'll be keeping this set for a while.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
