Well last week i shot the head of my driver about 30 yards down the fairway. This triggered me to start looking for new clubs. Im playing a cheap set of square 2's i bought from my ex's bro. I shoot between 95 and 100 with the occasion 100+ due to medical problems. I swing fairly soft but usually pretty straight. Im looking to purchase a complete set, no more than $400 but more around $300. I was looking at Golden bear clubs. Mostly LD 5.0 21pc set but they have graphite shafts and i think i want steel shaft since thats what i have now. Any other suggestions would be great, ill probably head over to golfsmith on tuesday and get fitted and see what they have.

Also im not big on hybrids so if you know any sets that include 3-pw irons, that would be great, Thanks

Almost every set includes 3-PW. Just go out and purchase a set that looks nice at Dicks or Golfsmith, ask an employee to set you up and tell them what you are looking for.

I dont want to purchase a set that "looks nice", i dont care what they look like im concerned with how they play, im not looking for $1000-$1500 clubs i want something less expensive untill i get to the point where buying expensive clubs will be worth it. Im ask here because most employees at dicks or golfsmith just want to make the sale and dont care what they are selling.

I personally wouldn't buy a package set, I haven't seen one that was worth what they were asking. I think you can put together a great bag for the same price and get better clubs.

I think one bit of necessary information is if you are looking for very forgiving clubs or something that will make you work a bit harder to get better. A couple of years ago I bought a set of Adams GT3s that were ridiculously easy to hit, pretty inexpensive, and came with a SW and a LW. My scores dropped pretty quickly with those, but then I plateaued soon after that. I then went back to less forgiving clubs, firmer shafts, etc.

That being said, here are some that I like.

I really like my Ram FX2 (GT steel) irons with factory graphite shafts. If you look you might find some for a song. I could also recommend Tommy Armour Silver Scot cavity back irons, you can usually get them on Ebay for $150 or less. There are a bunch of people who seem to like the Dunlop Tad Moore irons that Rockbottomgolf has (had?) and also Top Flite Tour irons that are also pretty cheap on Ebay.

For drivers I play a Tommy Armour Ayrtime that can often be had for $50 at Sports Authority, have hit it side by side with the big names, it holds its own.

For fairway woods I am really in love with the inexpensive Distance Master Pro Steels (from Golfworks or Golf Galaxy). I have a 7w that I threw together for next to nothing and it totally rocks. I am going to get a 3w and 5w too.

My putter is a Ram FX3 that I got for $20 new. I love it.

Add a $50 bag and I could still put together something for $300 for all new clubs that could hold it's own against just about anything out there.

you couldn't be more wrong. tell them your situation, and then can help FIT YOU for the clubs.

my buddy just bought a brand new set of wilsons from golf warehouse. they look and feel and play very well. im not a terribly big fan of hybrids, but their alright. the big 460 driver is very forgiving. you could prob just ebay the bag and putter if your content with your previous ones.

As far as a driver goes, I recently bought the Nickent 3DX Square. I haven't really used any big name drivers before but I really hit the Nickent driver much better than the junk I was using before. Not to mention it's inexpensive at $100 brand new.

x-18 irons, very great set to start on. GI but not Super GI. Reasonably priced. Get the matching sand wedge (80), ping karsten putter (80), and a driver of your choice. Ive got you at $660 sans driver, you do not need a hybrid or 3 wood or lob wedge yet.

Well decided that my irons can wait, just gonna get a new bag, driver, and sand wedge, since i dont have one of those, currently using a 56* that is way too short for me.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
