I'm 16 years old and still growing. Every couple of months, my swing gets faster and my driving distance increases. My iron distances also gain yardage, but not as much. I really want to get custom fit when I get new clubs but I don't know if it's worth it because I'm still growing and my swing is still getting faster. Your thoughts? Thanks.

How much faster is your swing getting? Also, are you using more force to generate this speed? Meaning, do you swing like you're trying to kill it, a la Bubba Watson/JB Holmes? Or do you have that smooth swing like CH3 or Ernie?

That said, you might want to consider a couple of options:

One, swinging a heavier shaft. For irons, anything between 123 and 130 grams. You might also take a look at a stiff/plus type of shaft. Remember, though, that a fitter can tweak your shafts. He can turn a 6.5 Project X into a 6.2, for example.

Same thing with your driver. A combination of heavier driver head, think a hot melt type driver that is popular on the tour combined with a heavier shaft. Also, you might consider trimming down the shaft to under 45 inches. This will give you more control. Just something to think about if you make the change. A good fitter will match the CPM on the driver to that of your swing speed. He or she can also leave some room for margin.

The two things I am blessed with in my swing are hip speed and good rhythm so I'm still swinging in balance and without effort. I've been taking lessons so my swing keeps on improving. It's good that there is room for change on a club. I never really knew that. My MP-32s have DG R300s so that's around 127 grams. As for the woods, I think that's a good idea moving to a heavier shaft instead of going stiffer because I'm not really ballooning the ball. I'll keep this in mind because I'll probably be getting some new Titleist woods this summer. Thanks for the advice.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
