I think you just need to use a little more solvent... it should not be that hard to get them on

I don't know what, but you're doing something wrong. I regrip my clubs every year and probably only use about 3-4 ounces of solvent. If you have used almost a whole bottle and they still aren't going on, something is wrong because it should be pretty effortless. Did they give you the water activated tape by mistake maybe? I don't know what that would do if you used solvent on it, but maybe that is the problem.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

YES! I have. Both my dad and I got actual blisters and cuts on our hands.

Then we realized the golfsmith tape/solvent was really cheap stuff. we got the 'higher' and solvent (comes in a bottle that looks like windex...a spray bottle) and the best tape available then we just followed the directions and looked on you tube to see videos of it! Eventually we got it down.

it was acuity or whatever the dick sporting goods brand is and their solvent, it was the only grip tape and solvent htey had to offer, i got them all on but holy crap was it hard, the guy said they would do it there, for like 20 bucks or something like that,

asked him about their fitting and how much it is, (incase anyone ever wondered or whatnot)

he said its 49.00 and if you end up buying the clubs from them, it gets taken off the price of the clubs so therefore becomes free

Yep. Sounds to me like you had the wrong size grip for your shaft. (I swear, golf sounds so dirty sometimes.

) I use Golfsmith tape and solvent (it's just mineral spirits after all) and the grips slide right on. Very little force required.
  • I'm assuming you only used one layer of tape, right?
  • I'm also assuming you removed the backing from the tape, correct?
  • When the tape was on, did you pour a little solvent inside the grip (covering both ends with your fingers), slosh it around, and then pour it over the tape?
  • Was the tape slippery (i.e., not sticky at all) after you coated it with solvent?
  • Did you run your hand over the wet tape to make sure there were no dry spots?
  • Did you try to put the grip on immediately after coating the tape with solvent?
If yes to all of these, and the grip still did not slide on easily, then most likely the grips were too small.

I just don't see the point. It costs me $5 per club to have a professional put on new Winn's or Pings (Pings last year, Winn's this year). I've got better things to do with my time...

You know it's done right.

It's done when you want it done. You don't lose your clubs for any time. You save money. I can do my entire set of irons in about an hour (give or take). And I can do the grip and tape removal while watching sports.

The biggest thing I've found when regripping clubs, and they've been tough to put on is lack of solvent. At our shop we simply use paint thinner. It's cheap and works great.

I've regripped hundreds of clubs and simple double sided grip tape, and paint thinner is what works for us.

Guess I'm lucky

I usually get it done while I demo clubs for free on the driving range at Fiddler's Green. They do it right. The most I could conceivably save is $13 if I could do it in an hour (which I couldn't), and my time is worth considerably more than that. I'm mean, if you enjoy it, and take pride in it, that's awesome. I don't work on my own plumbing anymore either... learned that one the hard way though
