Any thoughts on getting a 2 hybrid versus a 5 wood? I have recently purchased the new Taylormade Burner Plus irons with the 3 and 4 hybrids. I also have a 3 wood. I need one more club (at least) to fill the gap between the 3 hybrid and the 3 wood. The TM Burner 5 wood is 18 degrees with a 42.5 inch shaft. The 2 hybrid is 17 degrees with a 40 inch shaft.

It seems to me that the hybrid will be a little easier to hit, mainly due to the shorter length, especially off the fairway. But would the 5 wood be more versatile?

TIA for any input.

I am guessing you are only playing 2 wedges other than PW? If you need something to fill the gap, try out both and pick whichever one feels better out. I own both and play them depending on the course I am going to play. Most people hit either hybrids or woods better.

That's what I did. I love my 2 hybrid, but sometimes ill throw the 5 wood back in the bag depending on the course.

I replaced my 5W with a 2H. I could hit 3W and the 3H/4H, but for whatever reason could not hit the 5W well. The 2H solved that problem. I'm sure I potentially gave up some distance by doing so, but a well struck 2H goes farther than a topped or chunked 5W every time!

What characteristics of the course affect your decision as to 2h vs. 5w?

If I'm playing a course with a lot of water (especially over long par 5's) , I'm much more comfortable with the 5 wood. If there is a lot of wind or tight fairways I will opt for the 2 hybrid or the 2 iron....also the rough, some rough's are well rougher than others. In all seriousness, if I am playing a course with tight fairways with overgrown rough I know I'm much better at hitting the hybrid or punching out with an iron then attempting with the fairway metal.

I think a lot of people are having trouble with the newer fairway woods, especially hitting them off of the deck, some of the newer fairways are as large or larger than the old drivers, which is why I really like my 906F2. It's large enough that I don't over stress about contact but not so large that I psych myself out when hitting it off of the deck. To be honest I rarely hit my 3 wood, I am confident enough with my driver that I rarely use it off the tee and I am not confident enough with the 3 wood to hit it off of the deck. Sometimes I pull the 3 wood out and take both the 2 iron/2hybrid and the 5 wood. I am considering ding away with the 3 wood/5 wood combo and opting for a high trajectory 3 wood or 4 wood...and thus carrying nly one fairway metal. Though I probably should just get more confident with what I have instead of spending more money....but what's the fun in that?

I have a 3 Iron hybrid 19* instead of a 5 wood. I like it better because I can utilize it out of bad lies much much easier. Not too fond off the tee with it though, I hook the hell out of it.

My theory is based on what kind of course you are playing.....Short rough, 5 wood in bag, long rough, hybrid in bag....pay attention to wind factors though, becaue you will hit one higher than the other but everybody is built differently, a shorter guy may be able to strike a hybrid better than a 5 wood and a taller guy may be able to strike a 5 wood better than a hybrid, it all depends on your angle of attack as well

I think a 5 wood is more forgiving and can be made to do what a 2 hybrid can with a little setup adjustment. The 5 wood will hit the ball higher with better carry distance for me. It seems the guys that are better with a 2 hybrid are those with higher swing speeds and lower handicaps because these guys seem to have better launch conditions. But for most, that shorter shaft does feel great.

Just a suggestion, try a 4 wood to replace a 3 and 5 wood and add a wedge. My strong 5 (17degrees) hits as far as a 3 wood off the tee and is so much easier to launch off the deck. Plus I really don't think you should be splitting distance hairs at long range. If your 3 hybrid won't get there, then are you accurate enough where a 2 hybrid is "just enough"? Just some ideas. Good luck!

What gap do you have between your 3W and 3H? How often would you be using a 2H vs an extra wedge? Unless your gap is something unbelievable like 50yds, I'd suggest another scoring wedge. A 20yd gap between wedges > 3W to 3H.

Why would anyone need to have a club between the 3W and 3H? It's only 4 degrees right? 15deg to 19deg if I'm not mistaken.

I wouldn't blanket it quite like that. Honestly you should almost ignore the number on the bottom of most hybrids. Depends on the brand and model. Two clubs labeled 3-hybrid can have different lofts, different lies, different lengths, some play more iron like, some play more wood like. Best thing to do it get fitted at a range, hit an assortment of hybrids, optimally with different shaft combinations to. A 19* hybrid may be a 1H, 2H, or 3H depending on the brand. Also consider that a 19* hybrid will usually play significantly shorter than a 19* fairway metal.

I see what you're saying but wouldn't that make it even closer between the two. As an example if I have a 15* FW and a 19* Hybrid that hits shorter wouldn't that make them even closer distancewise? I understand your point but I just don't understand why someone would need to add a club between the two in this case. I could see the logic if you have a 15* FW and a 21* Hybrid but aren't 3FW and 3H mostly 15* and 19* respectively?

Some people have a big gap between there. I hit a 3 wood about 240. I hit my 3 hybrid about 210. Thats a 30 yard gap that I wanted to bridge.
