...unwrapped set of Titleist 695.MB s, brand new off Ebay for an absolute steal: $620.
That's the good news.

Then I took them to my local golf-club who alters my clubs and requested an extra 3/4 " as is the norm for my clubs.
Me: "So that'll be $9 per club will it?"
Club Pro Fitter: "Ahhhhh.....yes....er......you do realise it's not quite as simple as that"
Me: "Oh really? Pray tell..."
Club-Pro Fitter: "Well, for a start, I doubt we'd be able to save the original Titleist grips so that's another $70 for new ones and you do realise the entire swing-weight and lie will be affected too so they'll need checking and altering?"
Me: "Okay - hit me. How much extra in total?"
Club Pro Fitter: "Around $210.00"
Me: "Okay...damn. Well I suppose I should have thought about that before"
Club Pro Fitter: "Ummm....also, you do realise Titleist won't have anything to do with these once someone else has customed them and will more than likely request that you sign a disclaimer form once you've paid for the alterations?"
Me: "Groan"
Club Pro Fitter: " You got three options: I can alter them to the best of my ability, you can send 'em off to Titleist who'll charge you around $355 or you can sell them on as new"
Me: "Sigh....okay, just do it"

So, that's my ignorance for you.
However, this guy (and he's real good and has been customising golf clubs for a living since the 1970s) to his credit, instead of having the shop take my money and run, he gave me the options before altering each club and has gone though the fitting with me which lasted about 2 hours and each iron has been individually lengthened, re-weighted and lie altered.

They play like a freaking dream!

Nice, I'm sure he could've saved the grips if he had the time too though. They can inject them with solvent and slide them off. I do my grips myself and I have a tool that I use to remove the grips without having to cut them.

True, but to be honest, I was gonna eventually have Golf Prides put them anyway...as it is, my hand-measurements required an extra two tapes and a mid-size grip adding.

I did feel that with my last set, I was getting a bit 'wristy' on impact, so that was an issue I needed to address.

Some club fitters don't even tell you that the swing weight has changed and whatnot. The just do it and you're left with a club that has no feeling.

It's cool that he was upfront with you and told you all the available options. Although it cost some money, you now have perfect lengthened and correctly weighted clubs. I bet those clubs feel great.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
