I have been looking at shafts and am a little confused, why I can buy a 55gram X-stiff shaft or kind of the opposite a regular flex 75 gram shaft.

The reason I'm asking is I just broke a stiff flex that was 55 grams - and now I need to replace it.

What's the point of one over the other or better yet who (kind of player) would use one over the other? Weight for control or flex? Torque rating?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

When you choose the weight of your shaft you need to look at a few things about the golfer. Their physical strength, the transition from backswing to downswing, and the point of wrist cock release. So a lighter shaft would generally be used for a golfer who is phsically weak, or has a very slow transition of the back to downswing, the lighter shaft will help them to hold their wrist cock a little longer and allow them the chance to swing a little harder. The heavier shaft should be used for the stronger golfers with a quick to very quick transition in their swing. It will help them slow down a little and help their timing.

Typically the weight of the shaft affects the backspin, and therefore the height. Heavier shafts promote a lower ball flight. So if you were content with your current ball flight i'd stay 55, but maybe it was a bit to high, then you could go 65/66
