Hi,
I'm a 51 year old female. Been playing 2 1/2 years. My Titleist 905R with YSL R shaft is fitting me well, but I need to upgrade my irons.

I'm playing Wishon 550C's, with 75g UST graphite at borderline A/R flex. I like these heads, but with my swing improvement (learning how to stay smooth and delay release instead of trying to muscle my way through), something is not quite enough. My male friends irons are great because I can feel the clubhead, but obviously too much for me. I'm thinking of trying R flex Nippon NS 750's or 850's, TruTemper GS 75 or 85, or TruTemper TX-90. I'm planning to build my 6 through 8 with three of them, to sort it out.

I would appreciate if anyone can share their experience with any of these shafts, or if anyone has experience with what works for ladies who can actually swing a club efficiently. I haven't run into serious women players at my public course.

Thanks very much,
Laney

Hello,

sorry i cant really comment on the steel shafts you mentioned, but i know a senior who plays your graphit shafts and he is just very happy with them. And all of our female golfers with a single hcp play graphite - two of them play on the national level, and i´m sure if they would see any advantage in playing steel shafts for them self they would get reshafted fairly quickly.

My point behind this - if you dislike the feel with your clubs, maybe it has more to do with the heads than the shafts? My current iron set i originally ordered with graphit shafts (my wrists often suffer from the increased vibrations that steel shafts produce) and i still would play them, but as it turned out they werent very durable and broke after a couple of months. But after switching to steel shafts i cant really say, that the feel & feedback is much different for me, unless the shots are really bad, then they provide more feedback than i prefer...

Even if thats not a satisfying answer on your original question i hope it helped a bit.

I would definately put the Nippons on my short list. I was playing a strong lofted Cobra S9II 6 iron as replacement for a 5 & 6 iron not long ago. It had a Nippon 90 gram shaft in it. It had a large, super game improvement, cast clubhead. There is no way it should have felt as good as it did.

I have a relatively slow tempo, compact swing; but the ball seemed to jump off of the face nice and high with a feel I can only decscribe as very solid and sweet! It might have been the head, but I feel like the Nippon had a lot to do with it.

Good luck in your search! I'd at least consider the Nippon.

Switched from Project X to Nippon N.S. Pro 950 GH, so not exactly what you are looking at, but they are great shafts. Having had the advantage of hitting them vs. the Project X, found them to be just as accurate, better feel and lighter. That being said the Project Xs I had were too stiff, so not quite apples to apples. Comparing the Nippons to the True Tempers in my old PINGS, apples to apples in terms of shafts I like, I like the Nippons better. Get fit!

909D3 (Voodoo, stiff)
King Cobra Comp 5w (YS 5.1 Stiff)
AP1 4,5; AP2 6-P; Vokey 252 08, SM56 14, SM60 08 (Nippon N.S. Pro 950GH Regular)

Thanks for responses! For odd reasons, I've got an R flex version of my current graphite shaft installed in an 8i. I'll go pick that up, and start playing with lead tape. Then I'll locate the Nippon and the TT's, and give them a try.

    • Day 20: 2026.01.22 Hit about twenty balls at the range. Quietly pleased with how the changes are bedding in, surprsingly consistent ball flight. Hoping to film over the weekend to capture new movement.
    • You might also consider a tune-up lesson. Check and see if anything in your set-up or basic swing is holding you back. I have been playing for more than five decades, but on occasion I've had to make swing tweaks due to age, loss of flexibility, etc. You don't have to reinvent your swing. A couple of static set-up changes might really help out.
    • Good advice. In general, you want to take whatever weight you are lifting to a couple of reps before failure, for muscle growth. There are other tactics for PT related stuff. I would trust your PT person.  For muscle growth, you can go like 30 reps to failure. It is tougher to gauge. Also, it takes 2x as long to do the same number of working sets per week if you are doing 15 instead. It is way less efficient, but your case is special because of the injury/aggravation to the hip.
    • Several years ago I got paired with a twosome of golfers, one of which had a maybe 5-year-old son with him. The kid had a putter and a 7i with him, and on some holes he would drop a ball near the green, chip on, and putt. If the kid started to get distracted, the dad would ask, "Do you need to rest?" The kid would nod yes, and then take his dad's seat riding in the cart for a couple of holes. It was a slow day, and the kid was polite and friendly. We got through 18 just fine. (If it had been a crowded course day, I'm sure it would have been less pleasant.)
    • Caution for the seniors on weight training: Listen to your body. (I'm 75) I got a recent session with an orthopedist after a training-related injury. I put too much weight on a new resistance machine at the gym and ended up with bursitis in my left hip. Of course, it's the hip I dislocated back in 2023. I have my first physical therapy session tomorrow. I remarked that some days I can do 45 lbs. chest press - two sets - without much effort. But other days it drops down to 30 (😩) with just one set. (Complicating factor: I had digestive problems in this fall and lost about 20 lbs., with slip in muscle tone.) Orthopedist said that I want to feel some resistence, but that I should go with lots of reps with manageable weights rather than trying to set some sort of lift-pound record. I'm sure I'll get some refinements on lifting during tomorrow's PT.
