Ok so when i got my woods i had a 92 mph SS so i got r flex. Over the winter i have gained 20 maybe even 30 yds . Now i figure my SS is 96-97. When i go to the range now my driver is 20-30 yds left or right of the target and i feel like im hitting it perfect. My shots also go VERY high. The only way to avoid this is to swing VERY slow. So my question is could a shaft that is too flexible casue this(i know even if it is the shaft my swing plays some part but would a stiff help)? Also what are the side effects on a shaft that is too or not stiff enough? My MAIN question is should i take the leap and reshaft my woods w/ stiff shafts. My suspicion is supported even more because my irons go almost dead straight(1-2 yds of draw) and they are stiffs. Thanks in advance.

BTW the shaft i am looking at is a stiff V2 proforce(is there a hybrid and 3&5 wood version?).

I think a stiffer shaft would help tighten the dispersion. If you have access to an outdoor range where you can hit the same driver in a stiff flex, do it and see if it helps.

I would say get fitted for the propper shaft, but a stiff flex sounds about right. A shaft that's too soft will go high and be inconsistent when compared to a stiffer shaft. Generally, stiffer shafts will go straighter and lower. Weight also plays a role in distance and height.

I would say that reshafting your woods sounds like a good idea.

Yes and yes. Just get fitted for the propper shaft...a V2 for you may not work as well as a Prolaunch Red for example.

I would get fitted but there is no place to get fitted for a driver shaft. Now all i ahve to do is convince my dad that this is a good idea cause every time i bring this up he says that i just bought a new driver and its not worth it ugh that may take a while.......

I noticed before that you had stiff shafts on your irons and regulars on your woods. This thread explains it. The high ball flight and random dispersion on solid shots is definitely due to the shaft so stiffer shafts will probably help you out. Good luck convincing your dad.

Does anyone know how much 4 V2s would cost? Is there a different one for hybrids? Thanks

Take a look here:
http://www.ustgolfshaft.com/

Theres a ton of V2 shafts. Woods, tour woods, high launch woods, hybrid, tour hybrid, etc.

This will help guide you on shafts as per swing speed:

Since all of your woods that you want reshafted are pretty new, you may want to try and sell them and then buy new. They should still have some value. If you could get $275-300 for your driver, then you can go buy a new one with a different shaft and it would probably be less money then if you had it reshafted. I don't know how feasible that would be in your area, but it might be easier.

I will agree with what the others have said, if you have to swing slower to get the ball to go straight, you may need to to go to a stiffershaft.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I had a very similar issue with my FT-5 and went to Tampa Golf and got taken care of. The FT-5 had an S Flex Fuji e150 and I wound up getting a UST Proforce V2 Tour X-Flex (86g shaft) and having it "pured" for $110. I now feel like I'm throwing darts on the tee box as I never knew what it felt like to be able to actually "work" my driver. No more inconsistency and ballooning unless I mishit the ball. Amazing the difference the right equipment and pro lessons can make to your game!!!

BTW - The UST website has a virtual Shaft fitter that would help point you in the right direction on ballflight, control or distance, and flex!

How high are you hitting the ball? Would you say that the ball is ballooning? No roll? The reason that I ask is because I had a similar experience with shafts a long time ago and switched shafts - after being fitted - and hated it. I had made a swing change right after I got my new club back from Titleist and the ball was much too low. I ended up having to change shafts again which needless to say, I don't think your Dad will be too keen on.

My only suggestion, should you go stiffer would be to keep in mind your long term goals as well as your short term. If you are ballooning the ball, I would check to see what your impact looks like - leading shoulder and lag especially - and then see if you are going to be making any changes to your swing. The swing change might be enough to at least lower your ball flight for now and then you can have that "negotiation" with your Dad about getting a shaft that will fit you better.

My advice would be to find somewhere with a launch monitor and see what shaft specs produce the best results. It the recommendation is to re-shaft, then that is probably what you should do.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
