Hi everyone.

I just started golfing this week, and I am very hooked on the sport already. At some time I have to get some equipment, but since I am a newbie, I do not know what to look for or buy.

First of all I need a bag (a stand bag I think) and a set of clubs. Do you guys have any recommendations?

I saw this Onyx ZX Pro Full Starter Package Set at argos.co.uk, but I found out that it could not be shipped to Denmark, which is where I live.

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,
Thomas/Gosser

It all depends on budget. Look for clubs that say "low and deep CG", "high MOI", etc. They will be easier to hit. Avoid clubs that are labled as players and use words such as workable or low launch. And as for a full set, you would be much better off getting used clubs from name brands rather than a full set from a questionable company. Clubs like that, the driver and 3w in particular, break very easily. One of the only sets like this I could recommend is the Tour Edge Bazooka. Some of the best names are Callaway, Ping, Cleveland, Taylormade, and Cobra.

In my stand bag:
909D3 with 10.5 degrees of loft and a 45 inch Fujikura Rombax 6Z08, x-flex
909F3 15* with a stock Diamana Blue
FT 18* with an Aldila NV
X-forged ('07), 3-PW with Project X 6.0 CG12, 53/11, and 58* with DSG Red X2, 33"All with Lamkin Crossline Full Cord. (except the putter of...

if you think you might play for a while, then i would not go with a starter set. When I first started playing, I got a cheapo Ram set, but the driver broke after 3 months of use. I ended up getting a new set of clubs after that anyway, and it felt like a waste of money on the starter set. Depending on your budget, I suggest looking into some good game improvement clubs, such as Callaway X series or Mizuno MX-100 or 200. You want something that is forgiving and good enough to keep for a long time. Definitely look on ebay, you can sometimes find clubs at half the price. Just make sure to buy from a reputable seller, since you dont want some fake clubs...

First off welcome to the game. As far as your question goes there really two ways that you could go depending on what your budget is. You could go for a starter thats brand new. A decent one should cost you around 200 to 400 dollars. The down side to doing this is that most of the time if you decide you want to get serious about this game these clubs are often not adaquate choices for more than 1 to 2 seasons. If you go this route then I suggest going to golfgalaxy.com and checking out the maxfli or adams tight lies sets. The seem decent and priced fairly competitively. The way I would personally opt for if I were you is to go either a golf galaxy or golfsmith and tell the salesmen your situation that you're a new golfer looking for a some clubs. They'll show you starter sets but they'll also show you used irons and woods. Personally, I would by a good used set of Callaways for 300 or so and then get a driver and a fairway wood and a hybrid. Then pick up a putter and a bag. No matter what you do, I don't recommend buying anything without swinging it and hitting afew balls first if possible. Make sure you're comfortable with the clubs.

Cleveland Hibores.
They are a hybrid iron set making them easy to hit. This is the best set for beginners period.

This is what I recommend also. Great value and great performance. I bought my irons for 80bux on ebay and have been getting the woods / driver right from tour edge.

The best way to go would be to get a really solid set of second hand clubs from the professional at your local course. I'd suggest a driver with about 12* loft, a fairway wood with 18* loft, a set of cavity-back irons from 4 iron to pitching wedge, a 56* sand iron and a putter. You should be able to pick this up for around 200-250 Euros and you'll get a good few years of service from them before you'll need to replace them. Good luck!

In my Tour bag

As a newbie I advise caution buying clubs on ebay. There are crooks and sleazebags out there and they are clever / sleazy.

I've never hit the Tour Edge but they are a reputable brand with great prices. Someone mentioned the Hi-Bore irons and they do seem to get good reviews from people who buy them as being very easy to hit. But they also look VERY different from other clubs.

I second the suggestion to get some good used or discontinued clubs at your local pro shop. I picked up a set of ping i5 irons at the beginning of last season (my first year) for about $275 new. Ping stopped making the i5 that year, so they were clearing them out. If you look around you should be able to find some good deals.

Also try play it again sports or a similar place. You can find some deals every now and then there as well. Maybe craigslist too...

Good luck,

I also recommend going used. I bought my iron set new but on closeout after it had been discontinued for a newer model, and paid $200 less than the new model which probably wasn't much different.

Any of the major brand game-improvement sets should work just fine. You'll also want a used driver - some people think that you shouldn't start out with a driver but the new 460cc ones are quite forgiving and I find that I can hit driver off a tee much much better than 3w (prone to the snap-hooks with a 3w). A 3w is an option as well but honestly when you are starting out you're unlikely to hit a 3w off the deck better than a game-improvement 3I or 3H.

Of course you'll need a putter (used is fine) and a new or lightly-used sand wedge (these wear out quickly). That should be enough to get you going.

Driver: Callaway X460 Tour
3 Wood: Callaway X
Hybrid: Adams A3
Irons: X20 Tour 4-PW
Wedges: X-Forged 50, 54 & 58

    • I don't have enough details to know what to tell you, man. If they were walking across, to play devil's advocate, maybe just wait another 10 seconds next time.
    • Day 11: Putts with a metronome and worked on some feels for greenside shots.
    • I realize the frame cuts off my tail but wanted to specifically see my hand path and club shaft and head travel from A5 to A7 with the grip and posture work I have been doing . This might be the shallowest I have managed to get the club head to enter into impact. I like the finish much more as well.
    • Context:  I used to play golf very regularly (and when I'm playing regularly, I'm on TST regularly).  In summer 2022, I got my handicap down to a personal-best 11.9.  Unfortunately, in the three years since then, I've had far less time to play, and didn't really make the time to practice.  I've played a bit more the past few months, and I anticipate having a lot more time to practice starting in about two months, at which point I'm hoping to go back to my old practice habits (practicing daily, Evolvr lessons, spending more time on TST (come to think of it, I can do that important last part now)).   But it was thinking about how different my nines have been a few times in the past month or so that made me wonder if there was a thread here about it, and sure enough, there was.  In the past month or so, I've had a 38-46 and a 45-39.
