Wedge loft?

Looking to add a couple (2) new wedges to the bag and was just wanting some input on which lofts would be most beneficial. My PW is 46-47 degrees and was thinking about adding a 52 & 56 degree to the bag. Think these will fill the gaps alright or would I be better off going a 52 & 58 degree route? I rarely play high flying lob shots so I just figured I could get away with a lower lofted club and open the face a little if I ever get in one of those situations. Just curious as to what you guys will recommend.

You certainly should have a sand wedge (most are 56) and the 52 to fill the gap would be useful.

I'll echo SubPar's statement that you certainly need a SW and a 56 makes the most sense (some use a 58 instead of a 56, but they can be more difficult for players to hit out of sand). As for your gap wedge, the best thing to do is look at what the gaps are between you other irons and try to keep about the same loft gap (or, more importantly 'distance' gaps)through the set (especially short irons and wedges). My PW is 47 with 4 degrees between irons so I carry a 51* (I noticed SubPar also carries a 51). In those shorter clubs you want to keep those gaps to a minimum if possible (unless you're really good at partial swing shots).

I agree with the above posts... get yourself a sand wedge with a decent amount of bounce for your bunker play, and then fill in the distance with a GW - 52 seems like a good fit. You can always bend it to 51* if you're worried about getting a perfect yardage/loft gap.

I have a similar setup, but have also tacked on a LW, since my SW has a lot of bounce and is difficult off the fairway. You mentioned that you don't hit that shot often, so you probably don't need to add a 4th wedge.

I agree with what has been said so far. I would only add that you need to take into account your playing conditions. Are you fairways harder, or mushy? Do you have a lot of low trees with bunkers to go over? Know what situations you tend to get into, and have to hit off of when you go talk to the store. They should be able to help narrow down your wedge and bounce loft choices.

Thanks for all the input guys. Looks like I'll probably be going with the 52 & 56 Vokeys unless the Cleveland wedges impress me. Now I just have to worry about bounce. My course doesn't really have too many traps that come into play for me so I rarely have to hit it from the sand. Course conditions also depend on the weather really but can go from soft to firm and back to soft in a matter of days b/c of rain. I'm thinking that a lower bounce for both wedges will benefit me more b/c of that.

I'd say go with a medium bounce in the 56 wedge, like 10/11 degrees of bounce, give you some versatility

I go the route of a 47* PW and switch up with a 52/58 combo or 52/56/60 if I carry 3 or 4 wedges.
My distances are 125/130 with the PW, 110 with the 52*, 95 with the 56*, 80 with the *58, and 65 with the 60*........

I agree with everyone on the 52 but will throw a monkey wrench on the 56/58 option. Years ago I read an article that Greg Norman wrote about getting out of the sand. He said most amatuers should use as much loft and as much bounce as they can find on a sand wedge.

So if you are just using the 56/58 for getting out of the sand you might look at a high bounce 58.
