after finishing my senior year of high school, almost 6 years ago, as captain of my not-so-impressive team I have only played about once every 2 months with my dad. I have started to play more and want to replace my 3 wedges, all of which are worn from desert play, which is very rough on clubs. Without looking at new clubs in over a year, my first though was a 60 56 and 52 degree Cleveland 588 RTG. What is a comparable wedge to these classic shaped short game clubs?
.
Also I have replaced shafts, grips and built clubs before. Any experience on the Golfsmith Snake Eyes wedges. I could make them cheap and they seem decent enough. Plus I am just going to replace the grips with my favorite Lamkins and maybe even make them 1/2-1" longer as all my other irons are extended (I'm 6'3")

I have always used the 588 series wedges. If you are looking for something close to the 588 the Cleveland CG12 line is real close. I don't know if they were specifically designed to be similar, but there is not much difference. I just got a 52 and 60 of the CG12 and I can't tell much of a difference from my 588s.

Other than another Cleveland, the Vokey, Nike VR, Mizuno lines are all pretty similar to the 588. They will all be slightly different, but they are close. The Taylor Made, Callaway, and Ping lines are a little different in style.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Cleveland CG12 is about as close as you'll come... or just get another 588. Problem with 588's new is they are now only made in chrome. I like a dark colored wedge... CG12 come in black peral or RTG w/ sole grind. I used to play 588s and the CG12 is VERY close, maybe a little more spin, and slightly different feel.

CG12's are what I would recommend if you really like the 588's or just a new set of 588's. haha. but the difference with the CG12s and 588 are the zip (wider) grooves on the CG12s.

Thanks you guys. For some reason I did not see the RTG version of the CG12. Guess I didn't look hard enough. Playing in the evening in Arizona you tend to get lots of reflections on chrome wedges and I like the feel better too. The Black version just looks weird to me. :/

I just picked up a new 52* and 58* Callaway X-forged vintage wedges and they replaced my 588 RTG wedges (51* and 56*). They are designed by Roger Cleveland, who also designed the Cleveland wedges, and for me the 588 wedge was very aspiring and gave me confidence at address. The Callaway wedges have the same look as the 588 at address, but have that soft forged feel. The Vintage will eventually rust so I will be back to the familiar sight I had with the 588's.

Well, I went into Sports Authority of all places to buy a new pair of soccer shorts for my indoor mens league. Like we all do, I wandered by the golf section and low and behold they have a 53 degree and a 56 degree 588 RTG on clearance for 69.99 each. They would be 1 degree off of what I have now. 54 Titleist vokey and 57 ben hogan but I think it's worth it.

Thoughts?
