Ok.. I might be way off base here. Getting back into play after injuries. When I put the clubs down I was about a 10 handicapper and was playing Golfsmith Pro Forged irons that I built (4-PW). The clubs I replaced when I got those were Ping ISI's (circa 1999).

Taking the clubs out of the garage recently I played the Ping ISI's b/c I figured they'd be a little more forgiving until my swing came back around. Well I've practiced and played a few rounds now with each set and come to the conclusion that I hit my long irons (2-5) great with the Pings and (6-PW) is better with the Golfsmith.

So I'm going to mix them up. different swing weights, shafts, everything. has anyone done this and with what results? Should I at least match up shafts or anything?

I've also been contemplating a new set but the choices are kind of overwhelming right now

I have a mizuno sand wedge from a tour blade set. I can't play the mizuno irons obviously because they are designed for better players. But i did test out using the 8, 9, pw with the sand wedge i was using because i didn't much like the big clunky short irons that i have from my callaway big bertha set. Worked really well and i would carry on with that mix but i might sell these blades to a friend...shame.
What I Play:
Wilson Mini Stand Bag | PING G10, 10.5°, Proforce V2 HL S | PING G5, 15°, 18°, Aldila NV 75 S | PING G5, 19°, Aldila VS Proto By You 80 S
Mizuno MX200 4-PW S | Ping Tour W 50/12 X | Ping Tour W 58/TS X | A selection of putters, all 35.5 inches.

I would think that if you are comfortable with both sets then there is no reason why you can't split them. As long as there isn't a big distance gap between the two models (the 5 of Ping and 6 of Golfsmith) you should be fine. You probably don't want a situation where you hit the 6 165 and the 5 185 because of a big loft difference, but that could be adjusted. I don't think the shaft would make much difference if you are comfortable with both. It might take some adjusting and getting used to, but there probably isn't a need to make them all the same shaft unless you just want to.

I say play with them for a while and get your game back. Then through the year you can look at and try and demo different new sets to see if there is anything you like. I sounds like you are in no big hurry, so take your time and make a good, informed decision.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.
