Anyone have advice what a low handicap player should buy? I know that's subjective but does anyone have any comments? Just getting back into golf after quitting for five years; I'm not up on all the equipment.

I have a new driver that I am hitting farther than I ever have. My drives are now regularly 250-270 and I've hit some absolute monsters. I had 155 yards into a 500 yard par five last week! I've never hit one that far. (Did have a tailwind, though.)

I need a weapon for par fives. If I bust it down the middle and have 225 yards to a par five, man, I just gotta go for it. I had that exact shot twice yesterday and blew it.

I could buy two clubs, one for, say 225 and one for longer. Or just one if I could make it work by choking down. I'd rather have just one fairway wood if possible, to make room for another wedge. So, I need something that I can 225-245. Of course, I could also use this club off the tee on certain holes.

Whatever this club is, I need to be able to hit it relatively accurately, as there is usually trouble around a green and sometimes, the penalty is severe.

FWIW, I don't hit my irons far. (7i, 150-155 yds) And I have never been a big hitter for fairway woods. I just hit it decently long with driver, as the ball is on a tee and I can swing harder, I guess.

I also might have to put in a certain shaft, unless I luck up and find a club that I hit well. For years, I favored a UST Proforce 65. I have that in my current component driver and again, I do like it. Then again, if there is a better UST shaft for me than that one, let me know.

Anyone have an opinion as to whether to try a fairway wood or a hybrid? I just looked at Nickent 5DX Ironwood... interesting.

To recap:

longgggggggg
good off tight lies
good off tee as well
accurate

Wow, that seems like the ultimate request, haha.

FWIW, I used to have a Callaway 3metal... it was nuts how straight and accurate I hit that thing. Only problem was I couldn't hit it very far. But wow, it was amazing regarding hitting my target.

I also would consider a component... my buddy makes clubs and is good at it and they are WAY cheaper. He made my driver and putter. (I saw a Mizuno belly putter yesterday that I liked... $325... I couldn't believe it! He can make me clubs for SO much less!)

I carry a 14 degree 3 wood and a 21 degree hybrid. I never find myself needing another club in this range but the only draw back is I carry 3-pw in irons so i have to remove a wedge and go with only a 54 and 58.

I average right around 310 off the tee, hit the 3 wood about 260 and the 21 degree hybrid about 235. These clubs really seemed to fill in the gap for me.

You could also meet in the middle and carry just a 16 degree hybrid and no 3 wood.

Hello Songwriter,

What worked well for me was taking my Taylormade Burner 3 wood and having it cut 1 1/2 inches. The inch & half brought to about the length of a hybrid, but the head mass was still that of a full 3 wood that still produced distance. Another advantage was that since the swing-arc is now shorter, the club is a snap to control and I even find myself using it more in longer grass that I used to before.

Hello Songwriter,

I like the idea above. I was going to be a smart a$$ and recommend a 4wood.

    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
    • Day 1 - 2025-12-20 Starting a new streak, of at least 1. With rain dumping for the next week in the north bay area, I'll be a lot of outdoor net work and maybe some putting. About 10 minutes of 7 iron work, focused on the usuals: weight transfer, keeping hands behind me. I'll have more time in the coming days for video review and maybe some Hack Motion.
