i'm a high handicapper shooting around 110 with my 10 year old clubs i got in middle school. it's time to upgrade and maybe be a mid handicapper *crosses fingers*

i'm looking at the x-22 and ft ibrids from callaway. besides the cost and the ibrids are a bit bigger i'm not sure which ones would be more suited to me. i'm not very good at hitting long irons so i thought the ibrids would kinda help with that. i've seen that they have both been reviewed well (golf digests) but all that cg moi etc lingo just confuses me. and what is this an optifit for draw. i tend to aim to the right accidentally so would a draw club make my ball fly back on course?

thought? :)

Your opening sentences give lots of critical information. First, I assume you're in your early 20s. And, possibly you're making more of a commitment to play regularly. You might want to lead off with some golf lessons to stabilize your swing - especially if you are a "self-taught" golfer. Then, the pro could suggest what you want in a golf club. Second, you're playing with 10-year-old technology. New shaft and clubhead designs can help a lot. Plus, you have one of two other problems:
  1. You had adult clubs that were too big for you, and may have a negative attitude toward them.
  2. You have a youth set that is now too small for you.
So, it's definitely time to switch. As for FT-ibrids vs. x22, this decision would rest in part on how well you get the ball up with your stabilized swing. Both are rated by the Maltby Playability Index (MPI) as Ultra Game Improvement (really, really user-friendly). Even within UGI class, the two are different:
  • X22 MPI = 854... Gets ball up easily
  • FT-ibrid MPI = 1160... Gets ball up a whole lot, maybe too much for some players
With this big change, get a computerized fitting for irons within the category your pro recommends. Some golf shops give you the fitting free if you buy a new set of irons. X22 and FT models would be a good place to start, given your current situation. Again, talk to some experts before you buy clubs and spend big $$$.

I have never hit the FT ibrids, but I really like the X22's. They have a really great feel imo.

A quote from Kris
...is that college bball really isn't "lower tier". The better teams have their rosters filled with guys who could play in the NBA. hell, guys used to come straight from high school to the NBA. I really don't think there's much of a difference skill-wise between the two.

Are you a once a month golfer, or are you taking golf a little more seriously? Judging from your age, if you plan to take golf seriously X-22 would be a lot more beneficial to you. If not I-brid, a super forgiving club, would be the best once a month golf tool to use.

x-22 = more players club
i-brid = weekend golfer

you decide where you want to be.

MPI stands for Maltby Playability Index, a rating system for irons based on how well the irons "help" the player on mishits and getting the ball airborne. For details, see:

Technically, the X22 and FTs both have MPI ratings of Ultra Game Improvement (super firiendly).

But X22 has MPI = 854, just into the UGI category (minimum score is 851).

The FTs, however, are clealy UGI with an MPI = 1160, almost 300 points higher than X22.

In the words of is2linda , go with X22s if you find golf really interesting, or FTs if you just want to join your friends once a month.
