Buying fairway woods 2nd hand, I see there tend to be some older (4-6 years old) woods with graphite AND steel shafts. I am looking for a 3 and 5 wood pair.

Question: What is the difference to having a 3 or 5 wood with steel shaft rather than graphite?

eg. What if I had one with a graphite shaft and one with a steel shaft, am I going to have trouble maintaining a consistent strike between 3 and 5 woods.

I am relativiely new to learning the game properly.

I have older Cally steelheads. 4 wood with a firm graphite and a 7 wood with a firm steel shaft. A graphite shaft is going to give you a tad more distance, generally, which is what I was looking for in a 4 wood that will be used off the tee when the driver acts up. However, I like the steel shaft in my 7 wood because I wanted the extra weight for plowing through the rough and a tad higher kick point to prevent too much of a ballooning effect that you often see with 7 woods. At the end of the day, it generally comes down to what feels and works best for you.

Thanks for your opinion. So you dont feel there is a mis-match in your "wood swing" using different shaft materials?

You're welcome and no, none at all. Your results may vary. My 7 wood, after all, is a replacement for my 2 iron, which has a steel shaft.

Drumon, we have a similar handicap. I hit my 5 wood farther than my 3 wood. I don't get enough carry on the 3 wood with my swing speed. I would say if you have a pretty good swing speed, get the 3 and 5 wood. If you have a slower swing speed, get either a 4 wood or 5 wood.
