I had read someone bragging about the Ping Redwood series the other day, so yesterday while I was in a golf shop, I decided to check them out. I only had a minute, so it was very quick...

I found the Piper model, and I'm 100% positive it was one of the Redwood series. The price was $169. I see the Redwood Piper selling for $249 on TGW.com now.

Is there an older "Redwood" series that may be lower priced? I can't find anything about it online. Did I stumbled on to a mis-priced deal?

I think that particular model has been been around since Ping introduced the Redwood line. My friend has been using a redwood piper for years. Perhaps the club you found was pre-owned.

It was definitely 100% brand new. It was in the new section, had a "new" price tag on it (the used clubs there are different), and I looked it over pretty good. I'm pretty unfamiliar with Ping's putters. How long has the Redwood series been out? Has it changed?

Is it something like the "Burner" by Taylormade that has changed repeatedly?

No, as far as i know a redwood has always been a redwood. I think Ping has been making the line for 5 or 6 years. From what i know, the only updates they have made to the line is a black satin finish and perhaps an addition from a previous design like the Craz-e. If it is new, i would jump all over it. There isnt a huge market for redwoods so the chances of getting a fake product is very slim.

It's a chain retailer, so definitely not counterfeit. Just wouldn't expect them to goof up the price tag either.

Just thought I would post a follow up. I went back to the store after work, and the putter was still there. It was 34", exactly what I wanted. It was right beside a 35". The price on the 35" was $249. I compared them up and down.. they were the exact same thing. They both had dates on the stickers, and both were recent.

$183 with tax, out the door, brand new. The girl working the register didn't seem to know too much about clubs or anything, based on her conversation with the guy checking out in front of me. I wonder if another salesman would have caught the mistake. I definitely got a steal, but I didn't do anything dishonest on my part.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
