I don't think you can intentionally/actively manipulate your hands/forearms in the downswing and be consistent. The hands/forearms release properly when there isn't much tension to hold them against the centrifugal force that is applied to them in a proper downswing. Now, this is coming from someone who used to hook the ball like crazy by dropping the arms way to the inside and flipping at it with the hands/wrists. My success now comes from quiet hands in the downswing. This drill may be good if you have a problem of tightening up the forearms and hands during the downswing (the ol' death grip on the club), but I think it goes too far in the other direction.

What a lame video...

The wrists and hands should stay quiet , not trying to flip them over or hold them off. A slice is caused by an open club face (push/push fade/slice) or an out-to-in swing path (fade/slice). Correcting this is about swing path, take-away and not swinging with the upper body. The club face angle is determined by the wrists, rolling the over or holding them off will change the angle to open or shut. With a light grip and quiet hands, you can hit the ball dead straight. For a draw, aim right and position the club face between the target and your body alignment. For a fade, aim the body left and club face between the target and your body alignment.

Trying to roll the wrists to cure a slice is just stupid. It may work now and then, but not consistently. Grip pressure is a huge factor there.

I actually think it's quite interesting if you approach the video from a swing path perspective rather than a "rolling the wrists/hans" perspective. He does show the correct swing path for each shot, a hook and a slice. If you notice his hook motion the swing path is in to out, and the slice swing path is out to in. I think this could be a useful analogy for beginners/slicers to visualize how to swing from the inside.

    • A strong grip cups the wrist (lead) and then it wants to flatten through impact, something I used to be able to avoid to keep it from going left and protecting my forearm (the main premise of my set up). Longer the club, harder it is becoming. Either way, yes, I need to transition to gripping it open.
    • Why don't you grip it "open" so you can return your hand to the place where you're comfortable/not sore, but the ball won't go left? It's effectively weaker… without actually "being" weaker?
