Hit my new 58-10 Nike VR in black finish today on the practice area for small shots up onto a landing green, some bunker splashes from sand - went ok with my own golf balls.

Later, over on the driving range I tried it in full swings using the range balls. Yikes! I can hit it fine. I wanted to change from my current 56 deg. F-2 wedge cuz I never could hit that thing on full shots. I went only about 65 yds regardless of swing speed or contact. With more loft on the Nike, I am back to 100 yds or more on wedges. I will try and get a 52 next, I use my Adams chipper alot around the greens, so that would do it.

My question is does anyone know if the Nike VR forged wedge in its chrome satin finish have a different effect on the ball compared to these black one? Mostly, what could be an issue was after every full range shot with the black Nike, I was picking out huge lines of white plastic ball cover out of its grooves. With that outcome, I know I'll be shredding a few out on the courses this summer on my full wedge shots, but maybe the Nike in chrome satin is less harsh? Anybody?

I highly doubt the black finish affects distance. My brother has the chrome version and it tears up golf balls as well.

I'm not a hugely powerful hitter, but my Nike VR wedges thrash range balls the same way as you described with the black ones. Good contact with a full swing of a wedge, and I get five lines of white range ball to remove.

I have the VR wedges too (black satin) - its purely a finsih and shouldnt affect the playability compared to the chrome ones
Mine tear the sh*t outta my balls too....i am going through 3 balls in 18 now...its getting expensive
and i find they dont have as much spin as my Callaway X-Tour's did....those things were awesome, these you really have to make em work

still deciding if i like em......

maybe u bought the model with the high rev grooves? a finish should not have any effect on the "bite" a wedge produces. the only reason why manufacturers make different finishes is so that everyone can buy something that appeals to their eye. if i wasn't a lefty, my vokeys would have the black nickel finish but i don't have that option

I know it's tough. The chrome satin has no difference. Try hitting the ground a little before you hit the ball. It loses distance, but it puts more spin and heighth. This was surprisingly effective and it helped with the shredding problem.

I couldnt agree more about the finishes. Im lefty as well and the black finish has a lot to do with these replacing my vokeys. Im big on the look of a club at address and there's just something about a good looking black wedge that gives me more confidence before I hit each shot.

    • Hey, thanks for the feedback. I do lift weights but I’m also adding yoga or Pilates for mobility and flexibility to my routine.
    • Day 18: 2026.01.20 Continuing work on arm raise during backswing. Starting to feel less weird, especially the slower I go. Looking like a busy week so might be the weekend before I can hit some balls.
    • It’s possible the graphite shaft has a small internal crack or a delamination. Tapping it and hearing a vibrating sound is usually a sign the shaft isn’t behaving as it should. Since the store wasn’t helpful, consider taking it to a club fitter or a pro shop that can check the shaft flex and integrity. If it’s defective, you might be able to get a replacement from the manufacturer.
    • It’s interesting how much a 3D system changes your understanding. Observing top players in full detail and realizing the trail knee shouldn’t fully extend is a great example of why being open to new info is so important. I like your approach: not trying to be “right,” but trying to teach correctly based on actual evidence. Makes sense why golfers would benefit from this perspective.
    • I would say both are equally not the best for golf. Is it better than nothing, sure.  Golf is an athletic motion. Professional golfers are doing a comprehensive workout routine focusing on strength, power, flexibility, stability. They might include some yoga into the routine. I would put both of them in the recovery bin, not golf enhancement bin.  If you want to increase swing speed, core strength, longevity in golf and life, then lift heavy weights.
