After a two week layoff, should I play:

My usual "ok" course?
A nice course that I haven't played in years?
A (supposed to be) nice course that I have never played before?

I plan to use my Droid with golfcard for the first time as well, so speed of play may be a slight issue while getting used to the app. I'm almost sure to play my usual course over the weekend at least once with the wife & kid, and maybe a second time with friends.

In the bag
Driver: Tour Burner 10.5*
Fairway: Launcher 2009 17*
Irons: X-18r 4-SW
Gap Wedge: CG15 52*Wedge: X Tour 60*Putter: Crimson 550Ball: E5

You can't go wrong as long as you get to play. Have fun.

It's been 4 weeks since my last round (did range work 2 weeks ago, have been quite busy otherwise), and I'm going solo as well.. Mainly going to map my short par 3 course on BBGPSGolf as I play so I can use that from now on. :)

What's in my Tartan Precise TS-869 Bag:
Woods: Northwestern 1W, 3W, stock grip
Hybrids: 855 Graphite shaft 3H, 4H, Golf Pride Tour Wrap midsize grips
Irons: 855 R flex steel shaft 5-PW, Golf Pride Tour Wrap midsize grips

Play the nice course that you haven't played in a while.

I use Golfcard on my Droid as well. Download the course now and when you download it it will show you the course information. Scroll down to the bottom for the "rangefinder" button and click on it to ensure that there are markers for that course. I find that there are already markers for about 99% of the courses except the private/semi-private ones. Another tip for Golfcard: only use the rangefinder when trying to get a distance or measure a shot. Always back out of the rangefinder after you've done this, as it will save your battery life. I can usually get through about 2 full rounds (or a full round + heavy phone usage during the rest of the day) on one charge. But if you allow it to sit in the rangefinder queue all round, it will drain quickly. Brandon

Love the app. It takes about 3 rounds or so to understand the different options it has available to you. You can track your club selection, tee off distance, get manual yardages to different spots in the fairway (or other places not marked by a hazard), etc. It is a really useful tool for keeping track of where you're dropping strokes, fairways hit, GIR, etc. I actually like that it uses satellite images of the fairways and hazards, but I believe they are updating it with animated images sometime in the future.

The best part about it is that for $8 you're essentially set for life with this app. You can download as many courses for the next 10 years and never pay another dime, and if you find courses that aren't marked it takes about 15 minutes to do it yourself on a PC.

I finally got to play with it some on the course. I will agree that it may take some time to get used to. I found myself lagging behind the group in front of me trying to figure out what to tap. I'll have to look around and see if I can find a tutorial or walk through for the most often used items in the app.

Huh... Too bad Golfcard isn't for Blackberries (yet/ever). I'm still trying to figure out the best app for me, but don't really want to map my course out myself (considering I've only been there twice, and the layout/design of the par 3 course doesn't lend itself to easy identification of holes via Google Maps. I can make it through about 6 or 7 holes, but then it's hard to remember which way the other dozen go. I'm waiting on requests with a couple programs to map the course (not paying $8 for Swing By Swing to map it), and once those are done I'll be able to figure out which program I want to use. Lake Golf Course hasn't been a high priority to map, even though most of the other Milw. Co. Parks golf courses have been mapped... Probably because it's somewhat of a goat track (though not extensively so).

    • I don't know what to tell you. You can't test wedges with range balls, and you have a LOT more info to gather before you can begin to really even test anything else, either.
    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
