After some more-consistent-than-usual play this spring/summer/fall, my handicap index has finally dropped below -3. Thanks to a round of 74 that included an eagle 2 on a 284 yard par 4 this weekend, my index now reads a beautiful -2.8! Just a few more tenths and I can play in a US Amateur Qualifier.

Just curious at your level of play, if a S driver shaft might give you more everything off the tee. Great going.

I'll let gas_can explain the benefits of my shaft b/c I'm not 100% sure, but even though its an R shaft, I believe its tipped a little stiff - for what reason, I'm not sure - it's what my pro recommended for me though. My swing speed is only about 94 with my driver.

Congratulations! When you get those last tenths knocked off and play in the US Amateur Qualifier, make sure you register as FAHooGolfs so we can track your progress!

I am sort of Sub-3, as in I no longer hit triple digit scores, but I guess that is a bit different :)

Anyway, grats to a fellow Virginia resident and let us know when it is in the plus range! Keep up the good work.

    • Day 52: simulator day. Played Old Head and shot an “80,” which was probably more like a 78 in a non-simulator. Then worked on irons for 15 minutes, and may have found a good feel.
    • Day 14: 2026.01.16 Some swings late in the day to confine trying to embed the hip rotation I'm working on.
    • I don't know what to tell you. You can't test wedges with range balls, and you have a LOT more info to gather before you can begin to really even test anything else, either.
    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
