Hey guys, Need advice on sets of irons that are forgiving and good for a high handicapper...28 who has problems with consistency specially with 4 and 5 irons. Herd about rac os from taylor made or cobra 3100 i/h...any other suggestions within a 600$ range(could be new or used in good condition).Im used to steel shafts...would graphite be better for me? More forgiving...lighter?Thanks

I would take a look at the Mizuno MX900, though I'm partial to Mizuno. I've heard good things about the Taylormade R7 XD something or other (the game improvement version). You can also pick up a set of Cleveland Launcher irons for real cheap. I used to play them - very long, and very forgiving especially on thin shots.

that said, if you're ok with a used set, you can get pretty much anything you need for 600 dollars. i would also consider dropping the long irons in favor of some hybrids. unless you're a good iron player and/or are in the single digits, most people would be better off without the 3 and 4 irons. as for graphite v. steel, that's primarily dependent on swing speed (among other things)...if you don't know it, how far do you hit a solidly hit 6 iron?

In my Bag:

Nike Sasquatch Tour 9.5*, Diamana BlueBoard 83S

tHANKS, I will look at the mizuno mx 900. I hit a 6 iron to about 160 yards on a good shot....1 shot out of 3 tries or so. I dont know my swing speed but comparing myself to other golfers i see at the range its average tending to fast. That does help?

For high handy's, I would recommend these:

Even the OS2.

Taylormade HT's are extremely easy to hit and high launch angles. The R7 XD version have stronger lofts, so it MIGHT be a tad harder to hit. Just my opinion.

    • I'm good with the bunkers, and the fairways are SUPER wide. Three yards should stop a ball that isn't landing in it from rolling into the hay.
    • I'm a little behind, but I just finished listening to the episode about practicing while on vacation.  I have two vacations coming up this month that I won't be bringing golf clubs with me on, and this was perfectly timed (I'm sure I am not the only one going on vacation in June).   Especially the part about stretching.  I keep putting off adding stretching, with golf in mind, to my daily routine.  I think I'm going to use these upcoming vacations, the first of which I'm flying off to on Thursday, as a way to get into this habit.   For anyone else interested, Fit For Golf (see sidebar) has fantastic stretching routines (some of which, I think, are on their free area).  I really should get back to doing their main exercises too.  I don't have any affiliation with them beyond "satisfied customer," in case that sounds like an ad. I may end up posting in the 5 minutes thread when I do golf stretches if it's my only practice that day... as if I don't already sound like a broken mp3 with my 10-15 minutes hitting indoors part. And back to the topic:  anyone not caught up on the podcast should consider catching up and listen to that episode, especially if you're going on a non-golf vacation this summer and want some practice ideas that aren't the at-home practice routine from LSW about long bunker shots (which I am sure we all do regularly).
    • Mostly pull cuts to slices. Some random pull draw/hooks pending of I hit the toe.
    • What's the rest of that story? Where was the ball going?
    • The criticisms are starting already 🤣 U.S. Open pro criticizes Shinnecock green conditions: 'Bumpy' After playing his first practice round at the 2026 U.S. Open, Michael Kim offered a less-than-glowing review of Shinnecock's "bumpy" greens.   The sand, I don't care about that. If the greens didn't come back as well for latest aerification, that would be a bit of a blunder on Shinnecock I think.
