I'm thinking about buying a set of Titleist 735 w/ 6.0 flighted. My question is "if i butt trim the shafts down half an inch will it make the shaft softer or stiffer (the set is + 0.5" over standard)"

Thanks

eyevan,

The shaft will play a bit stiffer, but only very marginally. It is highly likely you will not see any difference in flex. Think of the area of the shaft where your hands are placed as a handle, it has no dynamic bending properties, and thus trimming from this end will not yield a difference in flex. However, you are swinging a shorter "lever" with the same weight of head, and as a result the shaft will flex slightly less. What you will notice is the drop in swing weight, it will go down three points for trimming a half inch. I would strongly recommend getting to a clubfitter to find a way to bring the swing weight back up. You need to add six grams of weight, either with copious amounts of lead tape or insertion of tip weights. After adding weight, the shaft will play ever so marginally weaker.

eyevan,

I'll have to add weight even if I am just going back down to standard length? I just want to clubs to play the same as if I got with 6.0s to standard specs (i hope that makes sense)

eyevan,

In a perfect world, Titleist sorts their raw heads according to weight, so when the custom department receives an order for added length, they use the lighter heads to compensate for the added swing weight. If, however, a clubmaker has added the shafts aftermarket and they swing weight at say, D-6 or so, you will be fine having them taken down by butt trimming alone. I'm not sure what your current swing weight is, but it would behoove you to get it measured to see if you would need to add weight, otherwise your tempo, timing, and feel might suffer considerably.

thanks for the quick reply, but they were custom built from titleist and it looks like a little more work than I wanted to deal with.

    • I'm good with the bunkers, and the fairways are SUPER wide. Three yards should stop a ball that isn't landing in it from rolling into the hay.
    • I'm a little behind, but I just finished listening to the episode about practicing while on vacation.  I have two vacations coming up this month that I won't be bringing golf clubs with me on, and this was perfectly timed (I'm sure I am not the only one going on vacation in June).   Especially the part about stretching.  I keep putting off adding stretching, with golf in mind, to my daily routine.  I think I'm going to use these upcoming vacations, the first of which I'm flying off to on Thursday, as a way to get into this habit.   For anyone else interested, Fit For Golf (see sidebar) has fantastic stretching routines (some of which, I think, are on their free area).  I really should get back to doing their main exercises too.  I don't have any affiliation with them beyond "satisfied customer," in case that sounds like an ad. I may end up posting in the 5 minutes thread when I do golf stretches if it's my only practice that day... as if I don't already sound like a broken mp3 with my 10-15 minutes hitting indoors part. And back to the topic:  anyone not caught up on the podcast should consider catching up and listen to that episode, especially if you're going on a non-golf vacation this summer and want some practice ideas that aren't the at-home practice routine from LSW about long bunker shots (which I am sure we all do regularly).
    • Mostly pull cuts to slices. Some random pull draw/hooks pending of I hit the toe.
    • What's the rest of that story? Where was the ball going?
    • The criticisms are starting already 🤣 U.S. Open pro criticizes Shinnecock green conditions: 'Bumpy' After playing his first practice round at the 2026 U.S. Open, Michael Kim offered a less-than-glowing review of Shinnecock's "bumpy" greens.   The sand, I don't care about that. If the greens didn't come back as well for latest aerification, that would be a bit of a blunder on Shinnecock I think.
