Or maybe the feel and feedback of blades will help him to improve his ball striking.  IMO, this notion of, "my ballstriking isnt good enough to hit blades" is a bunch of nonsense.  I went for Mizuno MX-15s (super game improvement cast shovels) to MP-32s and I noticed very little difference in terms of forgivness.

Make a poor swing with either club and you will get a poor result.  What I DO notice though is the difference in feel with the 32s.  I know instantly at the moment of impact with the 32s whether a shot is going to be good or bad, which is something that I didnt have with the 15s.

Besides, how do you know iron play is the OP's weakness?  Maybe his driver or shortgame or putting is horrible and is driving up his handicap.

I would echo this.  My old irons didn't really punish me less.  They were in no way what I call forgiving.

old set:  http://www.golfreview.com/Channels/GolfReview/images/products/product_322881.jpg

I don't know how forgiving those are on the scale though.

What I do notice is the distance loss on even slightly fat hits.  But I think it might be that's just something that I feel more now, so I know why I came up 10 yds short.

$200 for a set of brand new MP 67's?  you buys those on principal alone... Just watched an ebay auction for a set of MP-32's advertised as only played once go for $500....

A lot of players that are now considered the greats of professional golf started playing golf using blades. They got better and are now icons of the game.

Why all of a sudden playing blades is like a hindrance to getting better with this game ?

If the OP wants to be good at this game, the clubs used should not really matter. That is part of his challenge.

so just as an update to this thread, i've gone back to my old irons.  i don't get punished as much distance-wise if i hit it fat (what i do most often, almost never thin).  but my pushes are still pushes, and my slices are still slices regardless of if i play my mizunos or my tommy armours.  i did feel like i improved my ball striking though with the 67s, just i could really feel when i was making crisp ball-first contact.  with my TAs, it's hard to tell.

just my opinion.  I am a huge proponent of forged clubs and mizuno makes the best no doubt in my mind.  I don't think offset clubs help that much and get you in bad plane/alignment habits.  you don't need to learn how to make an offset club go straight....you need to learn how to make a forged club go straight.  The feedback and ball flight/direction from a forged club is much truer/honest.

That being said....Mizuno makes great forged clubs with more forgiveness say Mp-58/59/57.  My buddy has 58's and the "sweet" feel on a good strike is the same as my 32's just more up in the air.  Blades produce a consistently lower ball flight which is what low handicappers look for or flight control.  The iron shaft that fits you as much as the head in irons.  Project x/KBH fit for your speed and spine aligned.  consistency in shaft position at contact.  Shafts matter more than the head in drivers.

I am a three and down to 0 in the summer and consider myself a better than average ball striker and I struggle to find the sweet spot on off days with 32's, 68's, 67's or 69's.  for what it's worth.

saw that this thread got bumped again. still back with my tommy armours. i'm contemplating taking the blades out again, just because the weighting of the club is soooo much nicer, and i love the DG S300 shafts in them. i really don't anticipate it hurting my game too much since my driver is still by far the worst club in my bag.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
