Hey all...

Upon advice from a friend I have been tracking the yardage of my clubs. Being new, 2 months on the driving range now and two rounds of actual golf, I am not sure where I stand as far as distance for my clubs. I had my club head speed checked and it is about 85mph. I hit the clubs straight most of the time, when I am not trying to watch the ball fly. :)

Would you all be willing to chime in and give me your opinions?

Hope so...

So here we go...

Driver - 185+/- to @220

3W - 180+/-

5W - 140+/- to 150+/-

4h - 150+/- to 160+/-

5h - 140+/- to 150+/-

6h - 120+/- to 135+/-

7i - 125+/- to 130+/-

8i - 90+/- to 125+/-

9i - 85+/- to 100+/-

PW - 75+/- to 85+/-

SW - 50+/- to 75+/-

Flop (64*) - 20+/- to 40+/-

All measurements are in yards.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

Hi

I want to know about your driver wood.  it's very important.  What's your loft on driver?    so more be continue to practice on driving range. it's more built your body confident and trust your club.   a short game is so fun!!  a trap sand, pitch, chipping and putter.

I saw on the golf channel a lesson on how to build your golf bag...what type of clubs etc. They said that you should have 4* between the different clubs. Now what? Get rid of the flop of 64*? Get a 5 wood? Uhhhhhhhh

It is good to know what your yardages are for each club but don't get too caught up in them... just figure that they are what they are and what the yardage gaps you have between clubs and move on.  This way when you are on the course and you come to a particular yardage you'll know what club to hit.  It'll also help you with your course management... For example, I love hitting my 9 iron which happens to go about 130 for me... because I have confidence with this club, I'll often try to leave myself that yardage into the green for the third shot on a par 5.

Having a 4 degree gap or so between clubs is a good idea because it helps to make the yardage gap between clubs consistent... that being said you don't necessarily need a 5 wood; just because your driver is 10* doesn't mean that you have to go 14, 18, 22, 26, etc... you need to know what distance gaps are most important for you to cover.  My set up is very similar to yours; I have a driver, 3 wood, 3h, 4-PW, GW, SW, LW... and am very comfortable with that.  Maybe once every couple rounds (probably less than that actually) I'll come to a shot where I need something between the 3w and the 3h but I deal with that by hitting a less than full 3w or taking the extra stroke and breaking it into two shots (maybe trying to leave myself that 9i in).  For me, I like the extra wedges... my LW (60*) is my go-to around the greens and out of green side bunkers and I'd rather cover the gap between PW (46*) and SW (56*) with the GW (52*) than the gap between my 3w (14.5*) and 3h (21*).  Some people are the other way and like to cover the gap between the 3w and 3 iron or hybrid... if you do this, you just have to learn to hit a wider variety of shots with the wedges you do have.

Anyways, knowing the yardage for each club is good but don't worry to much about it thinking that you have to hit a 7 iron 180 yards or something.  The best players are the ones that know their game and play to their strengths.

Way to go Tristan. Thank you. Perfect explanation.

Ok. So if I need to get a gap wedge I should look, and hit at the range/store, at the range of 48 to 50ish... And then get comfy with what I have and learn to hit them all to the best of my ability and love the game like I do....

Coolio...

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
